› FORUM › THE LOUNGE › Bad fall off the pony…ugh
I have not fallen off Misty since she was born (and she’s 9 now). Last fall was my first fall ever in 17 years of riding on Kayo, my older horse….
Well…
I had a pretty nasty fall off the pony this evening! Not the one in my backyard, but the other one at a boarding stable…I was jumping her, and we were coming down the line, did a nice 2 foot jump over a pole and then started cantering (for nonhorsie people, basically running) and I started to turn her right, because there was a huge pine tree ahead. Well, she decided she did not want to turn, so she “faked” a right turn and continued straight towards the tree. The “faked” turn threw me off balance so I was hanging off her side, and then I saw the tree fast approaching and thought “Oh my god I’m going to hit it” and ducked into her enough to get around the tree and then lost it since she was running still . Anyway, I recall somersaulting under her feet and smashing my head against the ground (thank god I was wearing a helmet, they are good for something) and slamming my right side into the ground, and then sitting up and grabbing her so she didn’t run away…
I got an instant headache and my entire right back/butt/leg got grass/root burn and instantly hurt…
i got home and the headache wasn’t too bad, but I looked up concussion symptoms anyway…went to bed and this morning I can hardly walk. I can’t lean forward very far and I limp – even moreso because Kayo crunched my left foot last week to the point where I’ve been walking weird on it to relieve the pain and now have pressure ouchiness on that foot, so limping on the right side only makes the left side hurt more….![]()
So work is going to be fun today….
We almost had a video of the fall, too, but my part-lessee forgot to turn the camera on when I was going over the jump. Ah well, I probably looked like an idiot when I fell ….![]()
Pic is of the silly pony…
LL,
Forgive me for sounding really bossy but you HAVE to go to the doctor, not work first today. You’ve sustained several types of injuries (including your foot) and the problem is not so much how your feel today – which sounds very bad – but what might seem minor and go untreated, only to turn out to be a lifelong injury. Those types of injuries can heal and set very badly when left alone and can seriously effect your future riding, walking, and basic comfort. Especially if you hurt your back in any way. Even something as simple as being told to apply cold vs. heat, or an ace bandage for a week in a vulnerable spot, might mean the difference in use of your parts. Pleeeeease get checked out.
i agree with Pam. that sounds bad. please get checked out. i was in an accident in which i broke my back and i thought i had sprained my wrist. turned out my wrist was broken, but i hurt so much elsewhere that i didn’t even realize. fortunately i had it set properly not long afterwards or else who knows what could have happened. (i actually just had the tenth anniversary of my accident on July 4th…)
Lion Lop I read this at work and went crazy…please go to the hospital and have your head looked at. Concussion symptoms can creep up on you and you may be to out of it to take care of yourself. I don’t want to frighten you but you need to be sure you have not sustained any major injuries. You just cant assume you will be alright, especially when you are on your own. Please take care and have someone check on you..for everyone’s piece of mind.
Feel better…hopefully the only major damage is to your ego!
L_L I am glad that you seem to be in O.K. but please do go to a Dr. to get a clean bill of health or treatment that any one of your injuries may need, and I do not think that I have to tell you that you are not supposed to sleep off a concussion. Call a Dr. anyway and at the very least describe your symptoms to see if they think you should come in. You would take your dog or pony in if they had the same symptoms, so please take care of yourself in the same way.
LION LOP! update, young lady!!!
Hey all,
OK, I’m doing okay! I was pretty fuzzy headed this morning and nauseous, but I perked up during the day and now I feel moderately normal except for a slight pain at the back of my head and the incredible bruising that is coursing down my side
I did apparently strain/pull all the muscles in my neck, because it hurts to chew/yawn/talk/move my head, etc….
I’m going to call Telecare, a 24 hour medical careline, tomorrow and see what they suggest…
I think maybe I had a mild “Class 1” concussion but I think I’m doing better…
yes, please call tomorrow! (((hugs!)))
HEY Telecare is provided by THe Good Samartian Society (here at least) right?? That’s where I work!!
You’d better keep us posted on how you are!!! *VIBES*
yikes that sounds like a nasty tumble lion_lop. def call telecare girl!!! if it were one of your pets you would have already done this! okay… mothering segment is now over ![]()
Hey all,
I called Telecare (where you speak to a nurse about your symptoms and they suggest what to do) and the lady I was talking to said it sounded like a Class I concussion (where the person does not black out but can still have other minor symptoms). Of course they suggest going to the doctor to make sure everything is okay, but I’ve just got a head pain that’s associated with having a concussion…plus (and hold the tomatoes!!) I don’t have time to go to the emergency room or a walk-in clinic….
The nurse told me what to watch out for…which I will…
So, suggested treatment is tylenol and compressing the area with ice. If that’s all the doctor will tell me I can’t waste the time going!
So, I should be okay!
SPLAT!!!! (the sound of a thrown tomato)
Go see a doctor. So there.
{{{{{Healing vibes}}}}}
For crying out loud, go see a doctor!
I only say this because my nephew in Sault Ste. Marie had a concussion much like you, didn’t pass out or anything, just deteriorated over the course of the day and ended up having to be air-lifted to Sunnybrooke in Toronto. It was very serious and you should treat it as such.
GO NOW!
BTW, we have Telehealth Ontario and they rock! I’ve used them before and they have saved me an emerg visit more than once.
Hope you feel better!
Glad your okay! Hey, at least you fell off a pony and not a Belgian or something! ![]()
