Odin has this new trick where he “digs” in his litter box and tosses ALL the litter out of all his various litterboxes. i can’t take it any more. he starts this ‘ritual’ every day around 6am too. he creates such a mess, and i’m going through sooooo much feline pine. and the spray bottle technique/making noise does not work to curb his behavior. is there another litter that he won’t be able to kick around? or anything i can do? i’m at my wits end right now.

you could try a covered litterbox. usually once they realize that something is fun to do, they are going to keep doing it. remember that there are much worse places he could be digging. maybe once he digs and the litter falls back on him, he might decide he doesn’t like doing it anymore.

My buns do the same thing. I use a high sided litterbox and it helps a little. I just keep a hand vac around specially for the bunny litter mess and when i suck some up i empty it back into the litterbox …hehe.  I still change their box about every 3 days so they are getting clean litter of course.     Make sure that you only use it for the bunny litter  though. You don’t want to put other stuff back in the box     I’m hoping mine will grow out of it after i get them spayed soon. That’s a Big MAYBE though.

others have suggested putting a screen or grate on top of the litter to prevent the digging.

My Pringles did the same thing, just one day, boom, everything was kicked out of the litter box.

I got some green vinyl coated hardware cloth, cut it several inches larger than the box and bent the edges down so it fit down in the box, but not laying on the bottom. She promptly reached in and threw THAT out!. So I punched 2 holes on each side of the box at the grid level and zip tied it so the grid was secure.

She reached in to give it a jerk and turned the entire box over on top of her. After that she left it alone, but gives me stink eye about stopping her fun. I put hay on top of it so she can still throw that around if she wants, but at least I can have some litter and newspaper in the bottom to help with the smell.

I love the covered litterboxes as well, they are usually in the “cat supplies” aisle, and if you can get the Booda Dome with a ramp up to the litterbox (looks like and igloo) you’ll REALLY have it made as even if your bun succeeds in digging, the litter will just end up on the ramp.

Now, Juli got very creative and managed to start digging out of her COVERED litterbox (it didn’t have a ramp) and so the idea of a screen over the litter that Kralspace gave is also a good one. There are all kinds of things you can use, the vinyl coated hardware cloth is a great idea. Anything that pee can go through is great, even if poops can quite fit through it is OK, once and a while you just lift the screen up, dump the poop on top of the litter and place if back on top.

I think is that kind of grated looking metal that has a plastic-type coating over it. I think thats probably better than the normal hardware cloth because the vinyl coating makes it easier on the feets – is that right kralspace? I actually cut up this sheet of grates that is supposed to be a cover for flourescent lights. I don’t like it so much though because a lot of stuff gets stuck in the holes.

I haven’t seen plastic coated hardware cloth.

Beka, it is actually made out of wire, I am not real sure how or why it is called hardware cloth, when really, it is wire that is woven in a square pattern.

To prevent my two diggers I have a wire cooling rack imbedded in the litterbox. From my experience, there is no litter that a rabbit will not dig in. You can also provide a “diggy box” for your rabbit too – Fill a box or basket with shredded newspaper.

I got it in the garden section of Lowes or Home Depot when I first got Pringles. It is stiff wire, but I liked the coating on it, it just felt a bit softer maybe. I was cutting and bending it to create pieces to use to block off the fridge, stove, tv, etc. when Pringles started destroying the litter box.

Since I use the larger plastic boxes, I didn’t have cooling sheets or anything that would fit, so I used this and it works great for us. I keep a layer of hay on it so she’s not sitting directly on the wire, but I don’t think it would hurt her if she did. I don’t have to ziptie it anymore since she’s gotten used to it.

It’s very stiff and you have to use wire cutters and I used a piece of 2×4 to help bend the edges.

wow, first of all, you shouldn’t be using Feline Pine! You should not use anything for cats, anything pine, cedar, wood chipped based because your bunny is very VERY sensitive to the type of litter being used. I highly recommend Yesterday’s News, it’s recycled paper pellets and are very absorbant and there is no odor.

Bunnies naturally rearrange. She’s a digger, it’s a healthy habit. rabbits dig naturally. i would look into the covered litterbox or even just a litterbox with higher “walls”. is your bunny neutered or spayed? That always improves those kinds of behaviors also!

dmh426 is right, bunnies are very determined re-arrangers, I had forgotten about that. Pringles wasn’t too fond of most toys I bought her, but she loved it when I folded up an old sheet and put it in her condo. She’d spend all day unfolding it, bunching it, scooching it around, crawling under it, really took her mind off of slinging litter for a while.

I’m pretty sure feline pine is OK, we discussed this a while back, and it’s a safe litter to use

I have a digger too …but mostly at night. I cover the ends of her cage with towels, so the thrown stuff doesn’t get out the ends. Doesn’t help so much with the middle, but she seems to have certain predictable spots that she digs.

OK – here we go AGAIN

Feline Pine is perfectly fine for bunnies.  It’s what my shelter uses and what I’ve used for years.

Any processed/pelleted pine is fine because during the process all the dangerous phenols are all baked out.

It’s pine-shavings and clay-based litters that are dangerous.

thanks for clearing that up wendy. I use feline pine as well and people doubting it was making me worry a bit.  I would say its alot cheaper than yesterdays news, which i used before. And the odor control is AWESOME!  I would highly recommend it.

I’ve never used anything else, and with one bun I only have to change the box like once a week!  I’ve even let it go longer when I was sick, and still never smelled anything – I just felt bad imagining poor Pepper trying to balance on a pile of pootie-balls!

Dylan loves to dig his litter tray too. I put it in a large box once so the the litter would just hit the sides and the rabbits could jump in the holes that I cut, but Pepper loves to eat cardboard so that idea didn’t work. I have now resorted to reducing the amount of litter I use and just put a thin layer in the tray and replace it every day. So far so good.

You might want to try a Booda dome for the primary litter box. My rabbits like to dig in there and it usually keeps them from overturning the smaller litter box. I got mine at Petco for around $20.
