        Hey Everyone,

I have am acquaintence who h lias a chinchilla and wants to make a bigger enclosure using NIC panels.  Now she tells me that they can never be potty trained and need a “flooring” of bedding.  Has any one of you done this and is it true that they cannot be litterbox trained?  Keep in mind, she would like to make this a multi-level cage.

Any info would be greatly appreciated!

wow. well i’ve been doing just general chinchilla searches and i’m not seeing a whole lot that is very informative. most every site is talking in-depth about breeding. i guess this is a big thing in the chinchilla world? what i see says that they can either be on wire bottom cages or plastic bottoms, some sites say you can use bedding but it’s not necessary. a few sites mentioned littertraining and that it’s possible, but very hard. sorry, this isn’t much help…

Thanks Beka! Me too, I did find a good source by searching “chinchilla rescues”

            http://www.chinchillarescue.org/

My word they are bred a lot.  Poor things.   Don’t worry you were a lot of help!  I thought I would ask as I *thought* there was someone here with a bit of expertise on the subject.  If not oh well.  I see where wire cages are used, but still am pondering the NIC condo idea for them.

what i found that was interesting that i did not know (i think it was on chinchilla.org) is that chinchillas that are petstore raised are often very anti-social b/c they need regular interaction when they are very young. maybe that’s why it’s so popular to breed them so you know they are very tame? there certainly does not seem to be any stigma with breeding them. and it said that their gestation is somewhere over 100 days… very long for a small animal.

Very true from what I read as well and on Wikipedia it said that a guy originally started with only 11 and brought them to the U.S. to breed.

I just had a call in to a local chinchilla rescue for a whole nother reason, so when I talk to them, I’ll try and get some Chin Facts.

Thanks a bunch ladies! The biggest thing is that the owner would like to construct a NIC condo for their Chin but I wanted to be sure that one, it has been done and it is safe and two, if it has not been done, why not? These little cuties can jump 5 feet high!

BB, thank you so much! If you do happen to chat with them, could you just ask if a NIC condo is a no-no for them and why? Also, is it really true that they are really really hard to litterbox train?

I think what I’ll end up doing is joining a Chin forum and asking. I just hate to join to ask one or two questions then disappear off the radar. I plan on helping to construct said NIC condo if it is O.K. so I’m interested in knowing. Yipes, expanding my forte of knowledge.
