I’m lucky as I have weeping willows around the neighbourhood and often get a few strands for Jersey.  I read on another post that willow is high in fibre, sugar free and good for digestion.  Am I right to assume this is a safe thing to add as a staple to her diet?  Is there such a thing as too much of it?  Is there a vitamin content I should be concerned about?  If I can give this to her daily, I won’t be buying so many greens which perish too fast!  Also, how else can I make use of willow?  I’ve given her dried twigs and also wound the stems into a pretzel shape to dry a bit and given them from time to time.

I wouldn’t give this to her as a replacement of greens, but as a healthy treat. Just make sure that the tree has not been sprayed with pesticides.

There is such a thing as too much if your bunny fills up only on willow and does not get a more balanced diet. I also would not want your bunny to fill up on willow and not eat hay.

So stick to willow as a healthy treat. It’s better than bananas and raisins so of course you can give larger portions than you would sugary treats, but again, just make sure your bunny is not replacing hay, greens and pellets with willow only.

In Louisiana there are weeping willows all over. They are my fav tree.  Here in Florida i don’t see that many of them and none are nearby so I get mine from BB. OH do my buns just love it. I like hearing them happily crunching on them.

A healthy treat – GREAT! I give in to her ‘begging’ way to easily. Currently she gets willow every other week or so. (When I remember to stop and get it.) I can definately give more often than that.

Jersey has never been a huge hay eater but I’m pleased she’s eating more than ever. I put small amounts twice a day in litter box and have longer periods between when I offer other foods. So she tends to go for the hay now and has developed a liking for it. Yay! All tips I got from BB site of course!

Just a precaution – Watch out for mold & powdery mildew on them as it can be quite common in humid climates and is toxic to your rabbits.
