So who here has adopted from a rescue? have you kept their names the same? How was your experience with adopting from the rescue you chose?

Im currently in the process of completing my application for a rescue “Little Miracles RR” although they are a few hours away from what ive been told they have people who will aid in the transport of a bunny. We are currently looking to adopt one of their males (to be neutered of course) and if were approved and we get him we plan to keep his name the same. So far the staff that works with LMRR have been WONDERFUL!! They are so kind and caring on the phone, I cant wait to see what the outcome will be   Oh and for miss Beka cause I know you will ask (hahahaha) we do plan to have Rain and Shiloh spayed as soon as they are big enough. Right now our vet does not feel comfortable doing either of them because of their size (both under one pound)

I was just curious who else had adopted, how well the process went for you and if you chose to keep their names.. hey if you have pictures please be sure to post them too!

i changed both my bun’s names. i am really picky about names. i like people names, not that there’s anything wrong with Spot and Fluffy, it’s just not for me. i treat my buns like people, so it’s only natural i call them people names.

Beka.. this bunny has a people name I too love people names for animals. We have two leopard geckos who are named “Penelope & Cruz” so were all for people names here Rain just kinda happened

Rain can be a people name too! i’ve heard that before.

i adopted both of my bunnies. Meadow was a baby bunny from a petstore adoption event. my first bun had passed a couple years before, i had been considering getting another bunny for about 6 months and i saw the store was having a big event, so i stopped in. the moment i saw Meadow, i just melted. there was a little girl, very young, maybe only 6-8 years old begging her mom for her. i kind of swooped in and claimed her. i knew i could give her a better home. i held her and she nuzzled up against my chin and it was love. they weren’t sure exactly how old she was (i think someone maybe had given up a mom and babies). i took her to the vet and she estimated she was 4 months old. the rescue did not spay her since she was too young, so i had her spayed when she was 7 months, and not a minute too soon. the last month she was a holy terror!

Max is the new guy. he’s been here a month tomorrow. i wanted a friend for Meadow, Mike wanted a lop bunny so i found him on Petfinder. we had to drive 3 hours roundtrip to pick him up, but it was worth it. we went against conventional wisdom and did not do bunny dates. i was 100% committed to keeping both separately if i had to. and once he got here, i was pretty much convinced that Meadow was going to give me a run for my money regardless of who came home with us. the good news is: Max and Meadow are getting along right now, after only three weeks of bonding time!

awe, thats wonderful beka.. what a great story!! After driving 3 hours roundtrip i wouldnt be very quick to do “bunny dates” either. I guess we just got lucky with Rain and Shiloh, im hoping if/when we get this boy things go smoothly also but only time will tell. Glad to hear your little girl cooled off once she was “fixed”

I haven’t adopted though I’ve considered it. The humane society where I live said they only get rabbits once in a blue moon (not sure if that’s a good thing or a bad thing) and I didn’t want to wait any longer… I’d been looking in the newspaper and knew I wanted an albino rabbit and snatcher her up as soon as I found her. I’m favor names from songs or books that I like (Layla from Eric Clapton song, my snake Beatrice, name from Anthony Burgess book named The Wanting Seed, Jo Jo, a dog I had as a kid, from a Beatles song, you get it…).

My mom has been into adopting cats from the humane society and she’s always changed their names. What she did is call them both names, for example she adopted her last cat who was named Callie and changed the name to Karma. So for a while, she called her “Callie Karma” until the cat got used to that, then just dropped Callie and kept calling her Karma. Worked like a charm… She never seemed confused or anything.

No I don’t like people names. Ruby was already named b4 I got her.  But with Ruby cuz she is REW I kept it. Ruby eyed powder puff.   Long name but it fits.  With Nora Angora I came up with all sorts of stuff. Hubby came up with Nora Angora. I said well…… ok. I don’t like people names I like unusual names. But anyway I thought it kind of cute and it rhymed. I wanted Thora Angora but hubby liked Nora and Thora was well… I liked it. Thor  from  the celtic gods names and such.  So Nora it is. First time I have people names for my pets. For Nora I went thru Puff n Stuff from H.R, puff n stuff cartoon.   And Puff n Fluff Tyson cause she likes to nibble my ears. Nora  the bun with the Don King hairdo. I trimmed her since then but I am sure all that hair will grow back in no time.

I really like going with people names for my pets. Some of my last cats were Nathan and Sam. We haven’t adopted from a rescue place but we have from the humane society. Harley came with his name and we left him with it since he’d had it for 9 years at that point. We also kept Reno and Dakota’s names, since they’d had them for years. Aeryn was originally Sari. Sierra was Sousa. Keelie and Kylie both had people names but we didn’t like them, can’t remember offhand what they were but it was something like Thelma and Leora. Ringo, well I was going to go with a more people-ish name, possibly Jack, but he’s got these cute dark grey rings on his tail so he became Ringo. Scooter calls him “dogmeat” though – he’s got this whole alpha-male superiority complex thing going on with the dog.

I’ve adopted two from a rescue, Rupert and Chuck. I’d have changed their names but my boyfriend is the name police and won’t let me LOL Since he caved and let me have them, I guess he can police name changes. I do think it’s no problem to change their names, they’ll learn them!

I’m so happy to have adopted, it was always a good choice! They really appreciate you too! Plus you can get them already spayed/neutered which is not only a money saver but a ‘worry saver too!!

When we adopted two of our rabbits we changed thier names, One well sweetie woudn’t do for a boys name, and Skiddles, for some reson or another by boyfriend didn’t like that name.  So we change them to Olly and Lucy, People names and other names suit any pet as long as the name suits the pet….=-)….

Some of my rats have people names, others have other names….what ever suits them…

Our thee are rescues, one from a shelter and two from The Rabbit Haven in Scott’s Valley, CA.  We kept the names, but the names have sort of evolved over time too.  Our first was from the shelter, named DJ because he was found in a self storage place called DJ’s Storage.  His name has evolved from DJ to Doodge (or Dudge).  We still call him DJ sometimes.  Our second is Curly Sue, who’s name has evolved to Curly Boo or just Boo.  Our third had the best name of the three, Deanna.  She has evolved into Little Dee, or just Dee.

Dougal I got as a baby and he was a Dougal. Ermintrude I got from a rescue and she was “Ellie’s Friend” as she lived with a rabbit called Ellie there, so I wasn’t keeping that (though she might have preferred it to Ermintrude!). And the third I just got off an ex and he said it had to stay Chloe, however, what he doesn’t know doesn’t hurt him, but even so my mum and sisters have renamed her hunnibun or sweetpea. Both of which I hate. So I will ponder carefully if they do all bond and give her a suitably brilliant name! perhaps it will have to be zebedee!

                                  Other names:

Ermintrude: Minnie, Min, Black Witch, Evil Witch, Devil
                                  Dougal: Douee, Dougalmeister, Little Man
Chloe: “Jesus, there’s no way she’s a dwarf lop!”, Hunnibun, Sweetpea (ick ick ick).

I’m warming to zebedee. I can see myself calling out DEEEEEEE in frustration as she chews through another wire.

i always revert to nicknames too…

Meadow: her proper name is Meadow E. Bunny (pronounced “meadowy”) or baby girl, schnookums

Max: his proper name is Maxie Moo. i will usually call him Maxie.

collectively, i call them bunnies. “night night, bunnies” “veggie time, bunnies!”

once they are officially husbun and wifebun, i might have to hyphenate for Meadow… Meadow E. Bunny-Moo lol!

                                      lol… that’s cute beka

pinky came named and i thought it suited her so i kept it.  pinky poo is my term of endearment for her.  baby bun was not named & i kept calling her baby so it just stuck as her name.  it’s a misnomer now that she’s a ripe old 8yrs!  bogart the dog was originally named charlie.  cute name but there was already a charlie pet in the fam so i re-named him bogart because of all the ‘fancy-dancing’ he did.  he sure was a hyper & excited & jumpy guy at 8 months!  the humane society’s other doggies had sewwt pics of them posing pretty for the camera & this was bogart’s pic…

My family really gets into naming pets. I even remember my mom doing research about a breed or where they came from before naming a pet.

My bunny’s were adopted from the Colorado HRS Shelter – It was a wonderful experience. They mad sure I had a good idea of what I was getting into & really helped me prepare. They also offer fantastic support.

They ended up keeping their names. Winston really fit my goofy Dutch Boy. My sweet Hotot mix is such a little lady that Kay was a very good name for her too!

All my other pets had their names changed. My cats became Delphine (originally Puddy) & Claude (originally Red) – named after Claude LeMeaux. I took me a month to name my Husky’s – Sakaya & Nietzsche!

I got Lizzy from a rabbit rescue called Zooh Corner Rabbit Rescue that operates from within the shelter in San Gabriel, CA.  It turned out a friend-of-a-friend is a volunteer at the rescue.  She was really great about helping me find a bunny that was right for me, since she knew all the bunnies in her rescue personally…not like getting one from a petstore or a shelter without an affiliated rescue…  The funny thing is, originally I was looking at a boy bun named Noah, but he boxed at me because he didn’t know me, and I said I didn’t really think he was a beginner’s bunny.  So then I met Lizzy, and she jumped in my lap and binkied and asked for pets, and I thought, well, I wasn’t going for a lap-bunny, but ok!  And it turns out SHE’s probably as feisty as poor Noah!

I wanted to change Lizzy’s name because that’s my boyfriend’s ex’s name!  But I met her a week before I got to adopt her, and by then, I’d gotten used to thinking of her as Lizzy.  She has about a thousand nicknames already:  Miss-Thing-the-Bun, Lizzy-bits (Like “rabbits”), Diva-bun, Lizzy-bun.

She answers to none of them, so I don’t suppose it really matters…!
