Ok yesterday I was a bit bowled over by some smelly poops, something I have NEVER smelled before.  They look identical to the nice hard non smelly ones.  They are not the ones they eat.  They are slightly softer but still perfectly formed and stink. Do you think it could be from the pineapple/papaya and new orchard hay I have been giving him?  I am going to stop with the pineapple because my gut is telling me it’s too much sugar and change for his system.  Since I am going away and the sitter is allergic to timothy hay I have been trying different hays and the orchard I have been giving him is supposedly high in sugar! Do you think it’s all this change that is causing it? I’m sick to death of worrying about every little thing I see! Thanks.

yeah, i’m thinking it could be the fruit… how much have you been giving him, just a tiny, little bit, right….? that’s the only change in his diet aside from the hay. and i don’t think hay would cause stinky poop…

did you ever find your answer about the sugar content in the hay?

Just a teeny bit – maybe 1/2 teaspoon combined and only once.  Haven’t heard back from Dana yet.

is the bun lying the poops on you? It could be the food. It could also be he is marking. even tho a bun is spneutered it can still put out a skunky smelling poop as markings.   Are there any new people or animals going over to visit you or moved in? My bun will leave a round stinky poop on me or  my couch when he smells the girls on my shirt.  And he is neutered.  I know another member mentioned this from their buns too. Then again it could be the food.

No these poops are in his litter box. He never marks, never has. No new anything. These smell poopy not skunky! I know he’s just trying to make his mother insane before she leaves on vacation!!!

Well, we know he had a bit of tummy trouble (distended) which is why she suggested the fruit. Maybe he just passed whatever it was, and it’s stinky. Is he kind of back to normal in shape?
You copied the answer from Dana in your other post, and it sounded excellent. Your intuition was on target, so I think you can trust her advice over the vet’s while you’re gone.

I think they may just be a couple “territorial poops.” They can make those occasionally without any rhyme or reason to it, my bunny Raymond will drop some here and there – they look just like the normal poops except they have a bit of a “sheen” to them, and are a bit sticky. They tend to STINK!!! It could just be that Edson knows that something is up, and so he’s decided to mark his territory to keep things consistent Have all his poops been like that, or was it just one bunch?

That’s exactly what they are. Normal with a little sheen, sticky and stinky!!!! Well quite honestly I haven’t checked them all but he only poops in his litter box so he’s not leaving them anywhere but there. He must know I’m a wreck about leaving him.

You know, I just started giving Brownie (Edson’s look-alike) the Oxbow Papaya tablets because he is going through a heck of a molt, and he is having the same thing. Smelly, a bit softer than normal, sticky, etc, but not cecals. I was giving him 3 tablets a day, per instructions on the jar, but cut it back to 2, and it is a little better. I think I will do 2 every other day, or one a day…but I am betting Edson is having the same reaction Brownie is…maybe just cleaning out their system?

                        Good luck!

Maybe a reaction from the fresh papaya/pineapple is my guess. Hopefully it’s not the orchard hay but that just wouldn’t make sense.  I give him the tablets too and have for months with no problem.  He gets one or two a day. These stinky ones are a little smaller too.  They really gross me out!

I find if I pick up poops exactly as they happen they are sometimes a little moist and stinky…Is it possible they are always like that when they come out, but you are noticing now?

I don’t really think so because I have never smelled this smell before and I have a bloodhound nose!

I just went on Saturday!!! They started maybe on Sunday. I really think it’s from the fresh pineapple/papaya combo the vet told me to give the boy. I am not doing that anymore due to my own gut feeling and what Dana Krempels said and many others!!!

I tried the link you provided to read Dana’s section of the website, and you’re on there. She seems to answer more elaborately than the one you quoted (or my memory has failed me – fairly common today). It was interesting to find your question there, and I could have sworn she addressed the stinky poo.

Maybe it’s his way of saying “stop staring at me , Mom!” (If it smells bad enough, she’ll leave.) If he’s still funky tomorrow you might want to give the vet another call. Wish I lived close by – it would be nice to babysit Edson.
