The great thing about bunnies is that the honeymoon gets better, even after a little pause for adolescence. Bunnies just get more bonded with you, develop personality traits, change their antics just when you think you’ve seen it all, and become calmer, happy friends when they get into their mature years. Prepare for fast action if a vet is needed, creatures of habit (regular feeding times, play times, etc.) and years of sweetness and fun. I urge you to read all of Binky Bunny’s info. on the menu above, and this and other sites will tell you what to expect in different stages of their development.

Oh, and see a vet right away for a basic health exam and to establish baselines for each of them. Then discuss with your vet when to bring them in for spaying/neutering. You should keep them separate for now until you are sure that at least one has been fixed, and if they are the opposite sex, a month after the surgery. Did you get two already bonded bunnies? Have the vet double check them if you were told they are the same sex – it’s hard to tell when they’re young. Start saving for spay/neutering and research bunny-savvy vets in your area so you don’t have to worry later. Two are wonderful, but babies are a bit too much!

Hey I’m with you.  I have never had a bunny before Edson and I’m so in love with him!  I got him last November. He’s just an amazing character.  It’s just so heartbreaking that so many never get to develop their personalities because they are doomed for life in a cage or worse.  Welcome here.  We are all pretty nuts about our rabbits!

welcome here! that’s great that you adopted. there are so many buns that need love in this world… how did you decide you wanted bunnies? did you know someone else with them?

they are absolutely fascinating to watch. you can’t go into it expecting them to act like a cat or dog. just let them be themselves and you’ll really begin to appreciate how unique they are. as far as the honeymoon phase… i assume you mean their behavior? not how YOU feel about them. i think i can speak for everyone here when i say, we are as in love with our buns (or moreso) than the day we brought them home. they do bring unsurpassed joy to our lives.

are they altered already? when i adopted my girl, she was also 4 months, so she was still a bit too young. i had her spayed 3 months after i got her. what are their sexes? if it’s a boy and girl, the boy is probably old enough to be neutered if he is not already. tell us a bit more about them, b/c if they are unaltered and opposite sexes, they can (and will) reproduce at this point. and we love bunny pics! (especially YOUNG BUNNY pics!!!) so please share some if you can!

Great. I am glad you found us.  And you did  your homework it wasn’t an impulse buy. Some of us have been guilty of that. Buns just get more wonderful as we move along in time. What I find so amazing is that they are a prey animal and we have gained their trust enuf to let us into their lives and be comfortable with us. As time goes on It gets even better. 

Please give us more info & post pics!  We LOVE pics, especially of babies.  I had “hutch” rabbits when I was little, which unfortunately did not provide me w/ as much bunny personalities as I get to experience now.  I love watching them…I find bunnies have an amazing way of letting you know that they are extremely happy & enjoying themselves.  I haven’t seen those behaviors from my cats since they were kittens, so it’s awesome to watch them play or have “hay parties”. 

I don’t feel as “appreciated” by my bunnies as I am w/ my cats, but I think that’s b/c I’m still trying to get that whole lagomorph lingo thing down.  The only thing that does get me down, is the maintenance.  IMO, they require much more maintenance than my cats.  I think it’s cuz of the fresh veggies are their tendency to be a bit rambunctious w/ their hay & litterboxes.  B/c they have their dietary needs, you can’t get away w/ filling up an extra bowl of food when you leave for a weekend get away.  But it’s worth it in the end.

I think you will find that the honeymoon doesn’t end! The time that people are most likely to get frustrated with their rabbits is when the rabbits go through “puberty” and need to be neutered or spayed. It sounds like your rabbits are at the right time for that, are they fixed? If not, are you sure they are the same sex? Female rabbits can get pregnant as young as 3 months old, so you really want to keep them apart unless they are already fixed, otherwise you may have 9 rabbits instead of 2!

I’ve had rabbits for a few years now, and I’ve found that not only does rabbit ownership get better and better, but also it tends to lead to wanting MORE rabbits (through adoption of course ). They are wonderful creatures, my husband and I still find them fascinating to watch while they run around and play, very relaxing to spend time with, and a very calm and sweet companion.
