This may be a dumb question but when do you have to change out the Timothy Hay if my buns does not eat all of it?  I fill her hay basket that hangs from her cage but she does not eat all of it.  Should it be changed every day, days or week??

thats a good question I dont’ know of any rule of thumb on that. I have noticed that when I put a little bit several times a day they will eat all of it that way with very little left over. and at other times I put more than they can eat and it never gets eaten so when I change litterboxes etc twice a week out goes the hay they didn’t eat they seem to like it freshed up a couple times a day thats how they eat it the best with less waste. I dont’ use hay hangers cuz it falls thru anyways.  I am hoping to order a wasteless hay holder from sav a bunny soon tho.

Hay can last for a very long time in open air as long as it is not exposed to moisture, sun and extreme heat, HOWEVER, there is something about bunnies and their hay racks and leaving perfectly good hay in there. What I usually do is just put a new little handfuls in the rack a couple of times a day and mix it around. Another trick is to just put the hay from the day before back into the main hay storage, and get a new handful of hay. There is something about the “new” hay (even though it’s not any more fresh). I think it is just more fragrant when it first comes out of the bag of hay, and then when it sits out in open air, it sort of loses that fresh fragrant scent, but it can be refreshed by putting it back and mixed.

I notice that at the rabbit rescue – even if they got their hay racks filled that morning, and you put a new handful of hay in their rack that afternoon, they’ll go after the new handful – even though it’s not any fresher than the morning hay.

Hopefully that makes sense! Let us know how the “refreshing hay” a couple of times a day goes.

Another thing you can do: Take the hay that was ‘passed over’ in the hay rack, and put that in the litter box, then add more hay to the hay rack…That’s a lot of “new” hay

Thanks everyone for all the advise!!! I wasn’t sure if hay went bad right away. She is def a picky and finicky eater!!

I really like the idea of using it in her litter box after I take it out of her rack. Saves some $$. I was using fresh hay and then tossing it when I cleaned her box. Thank god I have you guys to set me straight!!

i’m going to have Mike build me a couple hay rack/ holder things for the buns. that’s a good idea to throw unsued hay back in the big hay box and swish it around… “trick” the bunnies if you will… altho Max snarfs his hay pretty quickly… (oink!)
