Just wondering where most of you get your hay: from a farm or store bought?

Most of you have probably read my frustrated with hay posts before. I buy SunSeed Timothy and for a while the hay will be pretty good, really nice and clean and then all of a sudden there will be a bad batch. I must admit I’m abit obsessive compulsive when it comes to my pets but if I suspect in the least the hay isn’t good I just can’t feed it to them. I’ve literally gone to the pet store 4 times this week for different bags of hay and they all didn’t make the cut. It’s very frustrating because the hay looks and smells pretty good but then when I start sorting through it, I find individual pieces here and there with black stuff or whitish stuff all over them. It’s weird and annoying because there will be like 50 good strands and 1 yucky one but I get paranoid and chuck the bag. There’s not patches of mold or dust, just the piece here and there. I’ve spent a fortune on hay in the last 2 weeks. I know this is anal and no one else actually sorts the hay like I do but I’m just so scared about mold and mycotoxins due to everything I’ve read.

I took a bale of hay from my horse’s stable and it looks pretty good, although there is the odd piece covered in black which I pick and toss out. They don’t like this hay as much as there tends to be a lot of brown pieces in it and it’s a bit coarser and this morning I literally spent an hour picking out all the brown pieces so they would eat a good amount of hay.

I’m sorry how terrible boring this must be but I’m sooo frustrated. I can’t spend 1/2 my day sorting hay.!!! And the Sunseed hay is the best store bought hay in my area (believe me, I’ve tried them all). Also I looked into ordering hay off the net but it would cost about 4x the price and I just can’t afford that with 3 rabbits.

Just curious, since you live near me, Lion Lop, where do you get your hay?

Am I being way to anal? Does anyone else actually sort through their hay to find “bad” pieces.

Sorry for the boring post, I promise in the future to real any and all of your posts, even if they are boring, lol

i’ve been getting the Oxbow Tim hay from my vet’s office. it’s 9 bucks for a 40oz bag. i bought two bags the other day and i’m already working my way thru them. Max eats easily 3x the amount Mead does (hay and veggies)… i checked on Oxbow and they have a 9 lb bag (bale?) but i don’t think it’s worth the price with shipping. might as well just buy multiple bags at the vet. there are some farms by me (i do live in Ohio…) but i’d be too worried just getting a big bale about not knowing what’s in it. i feel more secure with the Oxbow b/c i’m guessing there’s some quality control. can you get Oxbow anywhere near you? the site has a store locator page where you can type in your location…

I am more anal than anyone!!!!! I buy it from Binky Bunny because it is the best!  It is pesticicide free and kept in a storage facility to keep “things” out!  I have never found anything bad in it.  I buy the timothy hay and Edson loves it. It may be a little more expensive but I don’t care because it is delivered to my door and BB does such a great job of packaging it.  She is very picky and willl return hay that is not up to her standards.  I believe she ships to Canada now. Try it!

If you have the choice, get it from a farm not a pet store. At least from the farm you can talk to the farmer and stuff and it should be pretty fresh and pretty inexpensive.

I have 5 buns and 2 piggies now and I get the 25 lbs box of oxbow from the rabbit rescue in Dallas. My gas costs about half what the shipping cost would, but it gives me a great excuse to visit other bunny people and cuddle the sanctuary buns. It lasts an amazing long time (the last box 5 months) because I only put it in their willow baskets and they’re good about eating it and not pulling it down into the litter box too much.

I get very nice coastal hay in a 50lb bale ($8) from the local feed store and use it in their litter boxes, diggie boxes and play areas. I change the boxes quite often (besides the 2 in each condo, I have another 5 scattered around the house) but the bale last over 3 months. I do sift through it as I pull it out and shake the dust from it, but I’ve bought hay from this place for over 30 years and they’re very picky about the farms they get it from and there’s usually just the odd stick or weed I pull out.

I get all my other hays and treats from binky bunny and the quality’s always great! I still have the last box here under the desk with the last of the oak straw and that’s Lola’s private retreat, she loves to jump in and roll in it.

I give mine hay from various sources.  I get bales of orchard grass and oat hay from the feed store, binky bunny mini bales online, and boxes of American Pet Diner 2nd cut timothy at For Other LIving Things.  For some reason mine disapprove of all Oxbow hays, I have tried brome and orchard grass from Oxbow and been snubbed.  I rarely find anything bad in the horse hay bales, an occasional stick or clump of manure that I pull out.  It does have some brown in it, but they do not eat that part anyway.

I get mine from the barn. It’s not glorious by any means but it does the job; and I figure they will eat what they want and not eat the bad stuff. They are still “wild” animals after all, they know what to eat!!

Anyway, I would just get it from the barn and feed them that, no sorting. They can do that themselves!!

i’m working on my first barn bale and the buns like it just fine.  the farmer said it was a good crop and it sure looks good to me so far.  although there are longer pieces than the store bought stuff.

BBM, that is one of the reasons that I like to offer them some of the baled hay, the longer strands.  The bagged hays cut the strands into smaller peices, and they seem to enjoy nibbling on the super long leaves.

Puffytail…Have you tried kijiji.ca? It’s an online listing like craigslist and it’s for each area (specific) and I’ve seen lots of hay in my area….You might find better hay like that (farm bought)
