So I’ve had Kale for about 24 hours now, which means I have more questions! Thanks so much to BinkyBunny for answering my first questions so thoroughly.

Kale’s condo is at the foot of my bed, so I was able to hear him perfectly last night… all night. I think the longest he stayed in one spot was five minutes. At about 4 in the morning I got up and draped an old sheet over his condo, which seemed to quiet him down a fair amount, so I’ll be doing that immediately tonight. But the majority of his noise came from him digging at the carboard floor of his condo, and tearing apart his cardboard box hut. I intitally put the box in there so he would have a cozy place to sleep, but he much prefers it upside down with lots of holes. I’m going to be stealing a phone book from work tonight so give him that to dig into instead of the floor, but am wondering what other quiet nightime toys I can give him.

Also, Kale much prefers chewing cardboard to the chew sticks marketed towards rabbits – is this safe? He seems to be eating a fair amount of the cardboard he’s ripping off his box. Also, for bunny owners who have cardboard munchers, do they generally like willow? I feel like willow would be healthier than cardboard, if he’d munch on it…

        Thanks!

i shudder at the thought of that. i love to sleep. i’ve mentioned this on here before, when i get interrupted sleep… i am CRANKY!!! Max and Mead are now in the bunny room which is right off of my bedroom, and Mike leaves for work early (5am) and leaves the bedroom door OPEN! so i have to wake up and close it or else i am not a happy camper. Max is an early morning digger at the cardboard box… Meadow is a LOUD phone book shredder. yes, sometimes they can shred phone books loud. let us know how it goes tonight. lol…

i really only give the bunnies willow toys (along with cardboard boxes, phone books, and grass balls/mats). i love the willow. it is tasty for them, and it’s very easy to get. BinkyBunny sells all kinds of different shapes and sizes on here, and you can’t beat the prices. it’s my preferred chewing distraction. just whip out a new willow stick and they are entertained for at least five minutes.

Yes I can relate to your problem. Pepper loves anything cardboard or paper, she chews on the mail, books, cd covers – anything paper based!  She is so bad that I have to ration her time near cardboard boxes or telephone books as she doesn’t dig she just chews.  She appears to swallow everything as she doesn’t leave a soggy mess anywhere and she will quite happily guzzle on a magazine if my back is turned for too long.  I have tried willow and she chews on that too, basically she’ll chew anything except apple tree branches or any toy made of wood – which is quite frustrating because the willow baskets etc are quite expensive here in the uk I think.

Is it at all possible to move Kale out of your bedroom? Several of us here have written in the past about not being able to have our buns as a roommate. They are fine in their cages/pens at night without being right there near us. Spockie used to chew on the bars – rattle rattle rattle. Twice I had to share my bedroom with him, but I think when he didn’t get a response from me he settled down. Kale is still young and playing, so he may have slept all day and think it’s time to play with you at night.

              Willow is great.
Also, if shredding paper is quieter than cardboard, try filling a tissue box with pre-shredded paper so he can dig and pull but not shred as much. Spockie liked to shred napkins, which were Very quiet, now that I think about it.
Can you put some seagrass mats down on the floor instead of cardboard? It’s good for their teeth but doesn’t come apart the same way. BB sells them here.

I agree with Rabbitpam, can you move the cage out of your room?  I am totally convinced that Edson is awake ALL night as he sleeps all day! I can hear him dashing up and down his cottontail cottage and playing in the Binky Bunny packing paper!  That paper, by the way, is his favorite “toy”! And he’s way down the hall! We had to kick our dog out of our bedroom years ago because of her extremely loud snoring!  Do try to find another place for the bun and good luck!

UGH! Whatever you do, maracas and tambourines do NOT make good nighttime toys! Nothing like hearing those at 3am….

I have Horton’s cage in my bathroom… and he has gotten into the bad habit of waking me up EVERY night around 1 AM… I can hear him running, jumping, and even THUMPING! HAHA! I have to get up, calmly say “Night Night Horton” turn off the night light, and close the door. Then he’s usually quiet until feeding time at 7 AM for which he thumps loudly to wake me.

I think Kale will soon adjust to your schedule-they are usually quick to do so! Try leaving your lights on and a radio during the day so they want to sleep at night.

For a quiet night time toy-give her an old towel-they love to dig, shred and chew towels (especially if they are digger/shredders as it sounds like Kale is). This should be nice and quiet and provide lots of fun-plus a place to lay as well!

Well last night I took the large cardboard box out of Kale’s cage, and draped a sheet over the cage right before I turned out my light. He made barely a peep all night! He started moving around again at 6, which was the time I fed him yesterday morning. I guess he got used to my schedule right away! I’ll be sure to try the radio trick while I’m at work today, and I’ll set up a digging box for him like rabbitpam suggested. Thanks guys!

ps: I got my first few binkies last night, and my first flop!

aww… kale is so cute!  congrats on your first binky & flop, and wishes for many more to come

                              lol rabbitsmba!

i had to laugh when i read the title of your post.  i think the only thing my buns like to do that isn’t noisy is chew cords  and i don’t recommend those for toys.  sounds like you have worked out the problem already tho… so yay!   i sleep like the dead but some times when i’m up late working i can’t get to sleep because one of the buns is busy on a shredding project.  or randomly thumping at bunny ghosts.

margiemarie, I’m not sure how old he is, or how much he weighs – I adopted him from a family who got him from the Humane Society, so they never knew the age, and I haven’t picked him up yet, as he’s still getting used to me… But once he’s fully adjusted I’ll be taking him to a vet to figure out his age, if he’s healthy, and the state of his harbls, and I’ll get him weighed then, too.
