Well my new bunny Kale is getting used to his new digs! From what his old owners told me, I am sure I can provide a MUCH better home for the poor thing. The old family got their first bunny for their children for Easter, which then died three months later because they used cedar shavings. They got “Hopper” on an impulse while killing time at the SPCA (their reason for getting him? They already had the cage.)

The mother was scared of killing this rabbit, too, so only fed him timothy hay, pellets, carrots, and apples. No greens. So, my question is, since Kale was never eaten any greens, should I start him off slow, or go straight into giving him 2 cups a day? I’m planning on starting with romaine, with the occasional parsley sprig as a treat.

Also, does his cage seem big enough?

          Welcome to BinkyBunny, catalinacisne!

Some bunnies are sensitive to new foods, so it is best to start slow with a bunny that has never had greens before.  Introduce one reliable vegetable like italian parsley or romiane lettuce, and feed a small amount for 2 or 3 days.  If there are no problems, you can introduce another one.  This is also a good way to determine what your bunny likes.  Let us know how it goes!

i think his cage is lovely!  i forget the area per bun that is recommended but i’d say you’ve got a nice set up there.  provided of course that once he gets settled & litter trained he’ll have some daily free roam time.  i think i confined pinky to her enclosure for a few days before i let her explore to reinforce where ‘her’ spot was.

i agree with what osprey mentioned about the greens.  pinky was adopted from the humane society & a worker there mentioned she liked romaine so thats what i started with.  my other bun was already on that plus green & red leaf lettuce so we tried those next one at a time.  i think i went fairly fast & gave her a new green every couple of days to try out.  mind you she eats hay like a horse so it’s no surpise to me that she tolerated the greens i tried with her.   my buns favs are romain, green & red leaf lettuce, kale (tho baby doesn’t tolerate this more than 2 or 3 x per week before her poops get mushy) parsley and celery.  they love carrot tops too.

i think your plan sounds great!  good luck… kale is adoreable!

nice cage, the only thing i’d suggest would be to square off the corner that dips down and build in a level so he has somewhere to jump too.

                hello kale and kale slave

welcome to binkybunny!! sounds like a plan to me. I think you’re doing great!! I’m glad, that kale has a lot better home with you now!! I really like the “cage” set up, you have. is there a “door” opening somewhere, too? I couldn’t see one…but for me its still early morning [ahem] and I’m rather stumbling around right now anyway…

for the greens, I agree with osprey and bbm. introduce slowly. most important is that kale eats plenty of hay [timothy or/and orchard grass].

                kale is VERY CUTE!!

*hugs* to both of you, and x-tra nosebonks to kale =)

                  Hello Catalinacisne!

Welcome to you and Kale It sounds like you will definitely provide a fantastic home for Kale – I think the cage looks great! Once he is used to you and the house, it is a good idea to slowly give him more and more time and space to run around for “free time” so that he can get plenty of exercise, but go slowly or else he may forget some of his litterbox habits.

I agree that romaine is a great vegetable to start with. Parsley is good too, although I do have a couple bunnies who shy away from the parsley because of its stronger scent (they always do get around to crunching it down of course!)

Give Kale a “welcome” pet for me
