I am technically allowed one more bunny (Dave firmly said three is the max, or he’ll move out…) and I know when I find the *right* bunny it will just feel perfect-like it did every time before…

I decided what I’m looking for is a special needs bunny, some bunny that will need extra time and needs a fresh lease on life. I’ve been sort of browsing all the shelters within 15H driving (so I can do it in one weekend) and just seeing who has special needs…I was hoping for a lop but I might have found an angel….

This is able-angel; And this is her story. I emailed to see when she’ll be available. I don’t mind waiting. It will all fall into place if it’s right.

Little Able-Angel was born with a twisted spine. Her young care-giver wasn’t sure what to do for her so turned her over to VRRA.

She has one badly deformed hind leg that prevents her from getting around. She will soon have surgery to remove it. This little bunny is as curious and perky as any baby rabbit and will soon be in better shape to bounce about.

There’s a little guy at Save a Bunny with the same situation and he is the sweetest bunny on earth.  I think you are awesome to consider this. She is adorable.  Here’s Tippy’s story so you can compare.

Tippy, formerly Toby at Humane Society of Silicon Valley

Tippy, formerly Toby at Humane Society of Silicon Valley (boy)

              Status: Special Needs
Shelter of Origin: Humane Society of Silicon Valley

              UPDATE 5/27/08
Tippy has had a major decline in a very short time and is now having a hard time moving around. to be honest, it is heartbreaking to see such a bright and happy bunny lose his mobility and face such an uncertain future.

We took Tipping in for x-rays and chiropractic help, but his prognosis is very guarded. We really need financial help and donations to get him the physical therapy and the extra help he needs to have quality of life.

PLEASE DONATE TO HELP TIPPY! Please watch Tippy’s video.
              We love him very much!

Click here to make a donation towards Tippy’s care is also greatly appreciated and tax deductible.
Checks can be made out to “SaveABunny” or “Friends of San Francisco Animal Care and Control” and mailed to: P.O. Box 2143, Mill Valley, CA 94942.

knowltons…how would adopting a bunny from CA work out? Should I contact them? Tippy looks so sweet too!

Thanks everyone for your input. Dave’s a little iffy on a new bunny-especially since Rupert and Kahlua are free range now (it’s literally soooo awesome!! they go in their cage alot but they also spend tonnes of time with us-Rupert even woke Dave up with kisses yesterday morning awww)

Right now, Tippy is in a condition that I don’t think they’d want to adopt him out unless he was going to continue to receive special care to help him. Also, it is usually only very special cases that they’d want/allow the transport of a bun for adoption. They prefer to be able to check in on their guys if need be or if the bun parents decide that it isn’t working for them. There have been two recent cases of where a bun was reposessed from the parents because they weren’t taking good care of the buns.

Tippy IS sweet and until his condition changed, he never even knew he had a bad leg. He was the most Binky of the bunch at Save A Bunny.

                                Well I did find a couple in Vancouver;

                                Chuck

Chuck is a handsome, Lop rabbit who has a sad past. He was taken from the porch of a crack house by a little girl who could not bear his suffering. He was stuffed in a hamster cage and left outside in the freezing weather. The kind man who took him in at the girl’s request took him to the veterinarian. At first they thought he would die. He had been eating the cedar chips in the cage and had terrible eye infections. But Chuck is a survivor and he now has a lovely, shiny coat and plump figure. The eye infections were severe and Chuck has lost his right eye and is blind in the left. He does very well and will move around feeling out his area. He needs a safe place where he cannot fall down stairs or similar drops. Chuck is affectionate, loves to be petted and talked to and knows his name. He is a very clean bunny and always uses his litter box faithfully going back to it to relieve himself. He loves other bunnies and would be a good mate for a kind, lonely rabbit.

                                Tyler

Tyler is a young, boy rabbit who was thrown out to fend for himself behind a strip mall in Richmond. Luckily, a kind man in one of the businesses fed him and looked out for him and called us when the weather turned cold. Tyler is a dutch/dwarf cross with blue/grey eyes. He is curious and friendly – a very lively boy. Tyler will be ready for adoption once neutered.

                                And Posey

Posey is a very pretty, sweet natured girl. Her left hind leg has nerve damage and she cannot use it properly. However, she gets around very well and doesn’t let it bother her. Posey is a normal little rabbit in every other way and would enjoy a loving home. She loves to be out and active and objects to being confined. She is a clean bunny and uses her litter box.

I sent in my application and hopefully we’ll see. I’d love a lop eared and Charlie looks so cute…We have no stairs so he’d do well with us. I’ll keep you all posted (and no telling Dave!!)

I’m a firm believer that any bunny can bond with enough time. And now that rupert has a sister, he seems way calmer. I guess my plan would be once everyones settled, Let Kahlua and the new bunny bond (Kahlua can bond with anyone) and then introduce to Rupert…. I guess we’ll see!! I really like Chuck…

I just saw this.  Poor little Chuck.  I’d like to stuff those horrible people in a cage and see how they feel. He certainly deserves the best after what he has been through. You would be the perfect person to adopt him.

Actually why don’t you go ahead and email Marcy and just see. http://www.saveabunny.com Then click on Tippy and at the bottom you can ask about thim.

The general email is Marcy’s email. Either her or Joann would read it – and Joann is the primary care giver at Save A Bunny so she’d be just as a viable source for the current status of Tippy.

You should check but I believe that they’d rather keep Tippy for a little bit longer unless you could guarantee that he would get weekly chiropractic treatments. He also needs a good amount of exercise time though, so it is possible that going to a home where he’d have plenty of space would help him too.

Actually, these days it might be cheaper to fly. Not to mention that we have some contacts (albiet small ones) with some airlines that will give a discount to us if we’re transporting rabbits for adoption. But you’d need to check everything with Marcy and Joann first.

So, I got a response from a small animal rescue group in BC (less then 15H driving distance and a beautiful drive at that) and they have several special needs…One that sounds like Rupert, with an old fracture, one who sounds like he may be splay-legged but I asked for some clarification; And she said she has several with head tilt (some from abuse…). I asked if I could head out next weekend to meet them and adopt…

You know I was thinking I might bring them. Annette showed me this seat cover she bought that’s for pets, and it’s sort of plastic underneath (the part that’s on the seat) so if they pee on it, it’s sort of trapped. I thought I might pick one of those up and take them for a roadtrip-just cuz I’ll miss them and BC has beautiful parks I’m sure they’d love to go for a ‘walk’ and eat some nice grass!

So I heard back from the lady and I’ll probably (all things going well a) getting paid on time b) Dave not leaving me) be going next weekend to meet them!! She said the one who has the leg problem isn’t splayed legs and looks like a mini-Rupert

So I spent the entire day at Save A Bunny doing inventory and shipping things. I walked in at 8 and 2 buns had died during the night.  It was very sad.  Count Chocula and Rowen.  Rowen had a seizure and no one has a clue why the other one died! Count Chocula was the big chocolate lop.  Gorgeous.  I told Marcy you had inquired about Tippy and she said it would not be impossible to adopt him but she thought Nadia should go with him!  She’s a real doll with a leg issue.  Not sure if it was broken or what.  Anyway email her at saveabunny@aol.com if you are still interested.

Awww that’s soo sad!! Was the one who had a seizure part lionhead at all? That freaks me out that they are prone to them!! That’s soo sad. I think I will give up on Tippy as it sounds like they want to hold on to him right now. What a sweet little beautiful guy he is though. Gosh I wish we had a strictly rabbit rescue here! I have some people that I’ve been sort of loosely talking about starting up a rabbit rescue here. It’d be under the House rabbit society and another rescue group (so we could get under the charity number right away). Just looking into things and seeing how serious everyone is…
                                                                    Anyways

I think I’ve actually found quite a few that I’m quite interested in, in BC (so about 12-14H drive). I finally heard back about Chuck but I already sort of made arrangement with another shelter out there, they have LOTS of special needs rabbits (I guess the lady I was talking to basically keeps them as they never get adopted so it sounds quite promising).

I broke the news to Dave last night. First slowly I told him how his entire weekend was accounted for umn, so Saturday I need you out to do fencing, Saturday night we have a birthday, Sunday we are having bunny friends over (Scooter and Annette ) and uh, we’re getting another rabbit next weekend! LOL He was not exactly impressed but he didn’t pack his stuff and leave (partly because our house is such a mess right now he probably couldn’t find his stuff )

I was wanting to go next weekend but it might be the weekend after. I’ll have to firm things up with him, once he cools down a little! He wants to wait a few weeks so Kahlua and Rupert are more firmly bonded, which I agree with (although I’m sure he thinks waiting will make me forget and that’s his true motivation!!), but at the same time-a special bunny could be coming home with me darn it and I want that!

I think I will take Kahlua and Rupert, because they’d be fine on their own, but if it gets hot I’d be worried. So I think we’ll come home from work on a friday and sleep for a few hours, probably leave at one or two am and drive strait through. Get a hotel Saturday morning and then do the adoption/viewing Saturday afternoon. Then travel back Sunday morning and have the evening to get everything set up and ready for the week. I really can’t wait!! Garrrrr I need to harass Dave some more tonight!!
