This lady stopped him in the road for help, he stopped and went over and she showed him a kitten, it was only about 4 weeks old (if that) and its back legs were totally broken and in a funny shape, he also had poo all over him and all up his furr. The woman and darren put him into a carry case and took him to the vets, i met them there but he had to be put down .

Across the road were another 3 kittens which were all dead although there injuries werent as apparent as this one which had managed to survive i would imagine at least a day or 2. Further up the road was another kitten which had also been run down but was sadly already dead. I was heart broken when he called me to tell me on the way there I actually cried it was so sad. The worst part of the story is that the neighbour who was next door to where the kitten was lying said that a woman up the grove opposite has a cat who gets pregnant all the time and she just waits for it to have them and then leaves them in a box outside to go where they like when she is fed up with them. I was sooo mad that i called my local pet rescue and told them the story and asked them what could be done, they did nothing but fob me off with ‘its not our problem we dont cover that area blah blah’ so i said well #$@! this (excuse my french) and i called the RSPCA and they too fobbed me off and said nothing could be done to stop the woman doing this unless i had a) her name and b) her house number, ie. i cant just say i know she lives on this grove (which has no more than 10 houses) i asked so cant you just knock on each house and see which has a cat? they said no they couldnt do that, i then called another 2 shelters and all said the same. I was soo mad i thought what sort of pet rescue wont knock on 10 doors to stop another litter of kittens being killed needlesly? I hung the phone up and cried, not only for the poor defenseless kittens who suffered for god knows how long but also for the world in which we live where so many animals can suffer because humans are to selfish to either get their pet neutered or at least take care of the offspring. I am SOO angry right now that i reported it to several places and no-one cared. No-one gave a crap about stopping this from happening, i told the vet that if they could do anything to save the kitten i would pay for the bill and keep the kitten as long as he made them stop being in pain, the way it looked with its sad eyes, he said that would only cause more pain and he had to be put down, such a short miserable life.. *sigh*..

Oh what a horrible tragic story. Sorry but I hope that woman who lets her cat keep getting pregnant dies a horrible death herself. Is there any way to confiscate the cat and get her spayed?  I’m so sorry you had to witness all this.  I would never ever get that horrific picture out of my head.  It would be imprinted forever. You did what you could.  We just can’t save all these helpless creatures.

there is no way because i dont know the exact house she lives in i only know the road (which only has 10 houses but they still wont check it out) so there is nothing i can do and yes it really will be in my head forever, the poor helpless creature

What’s so tragic is that this is animal cruelty. Is there any way the neighbors could help figure out who the woman is so then you could report her?

If I were in your position I would knock on each of those ten doors to find out who she is. All you have to ask is if she had some kittens who may have gone missing. i would also get a description of the cat from your neighbour and if you can find it hanging around which it would surely do then I would take it.

Your best bet, and I know it isn’t a good one, is to daily go to the grove and look around. If she keeps up with the same tactic, she will do the same thing and put them out in a box. Although it will be hard for you, DON’T pick up the box. Call the SPCA immediately and let them know you now have her house and that there are abandoned kittens from her cat. She doesn’t sound smart enough to drop the box somewhere else besides out on the curb in front of her house.

Even if you found out who she was and where she lived right now, she could deny everything to the police and without proof, it’ll be your word against hers and, as you can tell by the reponses you got, they’d probably favor her word since it would mean no paperwork.

                    It is sad.

I know in Texas an animal control officer cannot just come into a person’s home without a warrant and I would imagine that would be the case anywhere. It would be without just cause. Just as with any crime, there has to be just cause and an investigation. Now, how they determine that, I just don’t know, but I would be very interested in knowing. I think even if they did knock on doors and ask, they are not likely to get a truthful answer from the person who committed this crime.

I wonder why the lady who told you about the person she believes is responsible doesn’t do something herself…

The bigger problem though in this is the person who does not get their animal altered – they are the problem, not the SPCA or animal control.

This person sounds atrocious for certain.

How about this – print up a letter describing what happened:

“On such-and-such a day, a kitten was found barely alive by the side of the road, it’s back legs crushed and in obvious pain. Unfortunately, the good samaratins who stopped to help were unable to do much other than rush it to a clinic where it was immediately put to sleep. Upon further investigation, 4 other kittens were also found dead beside the road. Aparently there is someone in this neighbourhood who seems to think it is okay to dump poor, helpless kittens out by the road to die. As neighbours, let’s all keep our eyes peeled for any such suspicious behaviour and report it to the authorities imediately.”

Then include phone numbers to the local RSPCA and other agencies. Leave one letter in each person’s mailbox – this way, all of the neighbours can keep an eye out and the one responsible will be warned that she is being watched.

How horrible. I’m sorry you had to experience this….

I have to ask, does this lady’s cat wander about? I would trap it, take it to the shelter and tell them it was a stray that keeps roaming the neighborhood. Either that or trap it, take it to the vet to be spayed, let it heal up and give it to someone who doesn’t live around there. It’s horrible what is going on and in fact I’ve done the above before twice. I had a nasty neighbor who kept letting her cat get pregnant and I found 5 kittens and mum totally infested with fleas, I took them in, cleaned them up, had a vet check them over, found homes for the kittens and unfortunately had to put mum to sleep because she became very ill. The next time she got a male and he was unfixed and knocking up all the cats in the neighborhood, so I took him to the vet had him fixed and gave him to a good home. None of the cats had tags or anything and I thought orginally that they were all strays as none had tags, no lost cats signs etc. I found out only after all this about the nasty neighbor. To this day I do not feel sorry that I saved those animals.

This is much like my best friends’ mom, who allowed her female cat to get pregnant over and over and I finally put a stop to it by adopting the mum cat and a few of her babies when my friend and her family were evicted from their home. We also lost mum cat after her spay, she was just too old by that time to survive the surgery, but I kept one of the babies and she was a great friend for about 10 years.

This woman sounds psychopathic to me. My guess is, if she loses this cat, she’ll just get another and the cycle will repeat itself. I don’t know if the flyer would be considered some kind of slander, but my guess is it’s worth a shot. Those poor babies! No creature deserves a fate like that!

This is very sad and I am so sorry you had to see this, K&D. I am sending you hugs to ease the pain. ((((((((((((((((K&D))))))))))

i have taken your advice rabbitsmba, i printed off the letters and posted them through every house in the neighbour hood i even posted them in the houses which i knew had the woman in (because it had to be one of those 10 houses in that grove so i posted them through every single door so she would have got one too) at the bottom i included the number of an organisation that do free spay and neuters to people who cant afford it themselves and i then told the rspca i had done that, they said i shouldnt have and that its not my problem so i said i wasnt asking your opinion i was calling to let you know so if anyone does report anything you will be prepared u obviously werent going 2 do anything so someone had to. I then went and spoke to the lady who i spoke to yesturday and she said she would watch the cat see which house she goes into and i gave her my phone number and said just get in touch when u find out and i will make the call if she doesnt want to so its a wait and see game now if anything happens or not, ive done everything i can saddly.. i just cant believe that there are people like this aloud to walk the streets with the rest of us, how could u be so cruel? today im not angry i just pity that woman who will never know the joys that i get from my pets. very sad

you did what you thought was best. another person would have just said, oh that’s sad and then forgotten it even happened. i think that’s great that you took some time to spread the word.

Good for you for standing up and doing something! It can be SO frustrating when you try to help and no agency or service will help you. At least this way, you will have extra pairs of eyes helping you to stop this cruelty and the person responsible will think twice about what they do.

And you know what? Maybe this lady will call about the free spay and get it done. And then it will be win-win for everybody!

It is disgusting. Yes. I find that animals seems to have a lot more rights here than in Europe. I have spent most of my life in Europe. My family lives in Germany (moved there from Italy). It is BEYOND BELIEF what animals have to go through in Germany, let alone Italy.
Just as a simple example, my parents’ neighbor used to have a dog (notice how I am using the simple past!). They left him outside, summer and winter, excrutiating heat or freezing cold winter. In their first year there, my parents moved into their house in fall, my mom could not stand the fact that that poor dog would whimper all day and bark and whimper again and cry. He had a very miserable shed, but was chained up most of the time. The yard he was in was very tiny, maybe 10 feet by 10 feet. All neighbors would talk about that neighbor, but nobody took action. My parents (who didn’t have a dog at the time) contacted animal control and got the city involved too. My parents were not huge animal people at the time. It was an awful back and forth but finally, in the midst of the worst summer in Europe (I believe it was 2003?), the dog was taken away from those awful people. They are not allowed to own a dog again.
Rules and regulations exist, but here in California, animal rights are by far more valid than what I used to be used to.
If that happened here, animal control would find out whose kitten that was.

I am so very sorry you had to go through that. You know, that lady and your husband are that kitten’s angels. They have put the kitten out of his misery. At least, in the last moments of that kitten, he could feel that people cared for it. He will forever be grateful that that lady and your husband cared.

                                        I am so very sorry.

liza that last part of your post made me cry again – i would have paid any amount and done anything to have kept that kitten alive and to have seen it grow up and have a happy life, i have always been more of a dog than a cat person but i said i would have him, i would pay for him if there was only something that could have been done, i knwo some people must think thats silly i didnt even know the kitten i had only spent all of half an hour with him but thats just who i am and i cant understand how some people can be like that and others could just step over it and not care at all, i know i have done all i could have i actually got a call from a neighbour of that grove where i posted a flyer and she said she loved animals too and was disgusted that happened in her neighbourhood and she would be watching for anything unusual and would get in touch with me as soon as she had any info, the sad part now is that even if i find out who that woman is they probably wont even prosecute her as liza said there are hardly no rules for the cruelty of animals here, people who kill other people have more rights than a tiny kitten who saw nothing but cruelty its whole life. i know i have done everything i can i just hope that poor kitten is at the rainbow bridge in full health and happy at last with all her brothers and sisters at peace at last. RIP – the kitten i wanted but never got to keep.

I am proud of you K&D. Bad people get away with stuff only if good people stand by and do nothing.

You’re one of the good ones my dear. And you know what…when at last you cross the rainbow bridge yourself (a LONG time from now of course!) that little kitten will be there, and she will remember you and will spring up with joy and come running to you to purr and curl at your feet.

Of course, you’ll have some ‘splainin’ to do to your bunnies. I can just see them now. Dax: “Here now….Who’s this?” Hopscotch: “Aw you know Mum, she’s brave enough to put out her hand to those in need!”

                                            Bless you!
