For those of you who followed and helped me through Nova’s unexpected litter, here’s an update, and I have another question.

First, she’s doing wonderfully! She’s still really mean when I try to pick her up, or pet her, or look at her the wrong way, but I think she’s happy most of the time because I do my best to avoid those things and only do them when I absolutly have to. So what if she’s not bushed to perfection daily? I can live with that for now. Today for the first time since she’s had her babies I opened her cage door and just left it open and she actually hopped out and has been zipping around my room for a few hours. She gets along wonderfully with my chihuahuas and so far hasn’t even attacked one of them! She’s completely relaxed and likes to lay by my feet after she’s done a few laps. My room isn’t exactly bunny proof, but for now she hasn’t gotten into any trouble (though I doubt that will last long, so I’m going to need to bunny proof my room a little better now). It probably isn’t the smartest thing to just give her my entire room to run around, but I’ll regret that later and after she pees on something. She’s just so cute though! I just can’t get over that. Even when she’s mean it’s cute! I just can’t believe anyone could let her suffer.

She has been into the vets again, and they said to just take my time with getting her to gain weight, but that she’s looking good, all things considered. She’s already on a decent diet and I shouldn’t try to fatten her up to much with treats. I should be able to get her spayed in a few weeks, pending my having money then. If not it will at least happen sometime in the next few months. I know that will probably help with her agression issues too.

Obviously catching her and putting her away before I leave my room, especially if I need to go someplace in a hurry, is going to be a problem for a little while. As it is, if I walk towards her or to close to her without even intending to do anything with her she lunges at my feet and I imagine I probably will get bit by her at some point just walking across my room. I won’t have a spare ex-pen for a few weeks/months, pending placement of a foster dog so that’s not an option for something to herd her into. Basically what I’m asking is for some way to more easily put her away, or at least confinded when I leave my room. I can simply throw a towel over her and catch her, but I’d rather not go that route since we obviously have trust issues and I don’t want to keep her confind all the time because she just loves running around like the slightly crazed creature that she is. Long term I would love to have her completely free range (in my room), but right now that’s just not an option. So if someone has a tip for this, great! And if not, then at least I have a towel and an ex-pen eventually.

I am sure all this aggression is hormonal.  You are going to spay her right?  After that she should settle down a lot. A great way to herd them back is with a healthy bedtime treat. My guy is not confined anymore but when I did need to confine him when I first got him I just gave him a sliver of carrot of tiny piece of apple or a sprig of mint or something healthy.  That way they associate something good with going to bed!  She is a cutie and the hormones are raging!

I agree with Knowltons. Some of the others have described using papaya tablets as a bedtime treat. If you get a container of them, rattle it, then put the tablet inside her cage, she’ll associate it with the reward for going in to bed. Let her taste one first to see if she loves it.

Very glad to hear how well she’s doing. She is adorable, a condition confirmed by many new pix, please!

that’s great to hear that she and all the babies are doing well (any pics?)

i think the treat idea is good but that might take time, if you’re going to get some NIC cubes for bunny-proofing anyways you could also ziptie a few together (maybe 3 wide by 2 tall and fold in thirds like a “U”) and use those to herd her in.

glad to hear she and the babies are doing well. i think it can take some time to train buns to go back to their house. i do a bunny round up and give them hay right before bed – they know it’s the cue to go into their house.
