  Ok so to make a long story short as you know i have 2 border collies one male and one female, neither are neutered because it was always one of those things where we will get it next week.. then next week.. then we thought about having a litter so we decided to wait a few months and see how we felt and then those months turned to years and ugh anyway
  
  i think my female dog (willow) might be pregnant. She has been acting strangely lately doing things such as chewing things, digging at the floor, trying to hide behind the sofas and cushions and getting under blankets and stuff, she has been nasty to our male dog (sweep) who normally she gets on brilliantly with, she is being very lazy the most noticeable thing was that she usually has a mad fit when the hoover is on, barks at it runs round in circles chases things jumps up and down and i hvae had it on over the last few days and she didnt even move. I hadnt really thought about her being pregnant until she started acting funny, then i turned her over and all her teats are huge and there is milk coming out of them, she was in season about late march give or take a week or so. I have felt her belly and i can feel like a squriming but im not sure if i am just imaging this or if she really is pregnant? I took her temperature and its 99.6, i did think maybe its a phantom pregnancy? but then i wasnt sure if this was really likely because of the fact there is a male around all the time, and the dates correspond, i kinda hope it isnt false, i think i will be gutted now after reading so much about it and everything lol what do u guys think? real or phantom?
  
  We have got a huge box and filled it with blankets and stuff just in case she goes into labour, i asked this question on yahoo answers and they all said that if she is producing milk it means she will have them SOON? help?

  oh and to add, she does look like she has put on weight however she always goes up and down in weight and has done since she was a puppy so i cant contribute that to her being pregnant or not, i did see a photo of a border collie the week before giving birth and she didnt really look any different to normal?

  i know nothing about dog pregnancy. i’m a little disappointed tho that you’d even want to breed with all the unwanted animals in the world, but… this is of course just my opinion. i hope everything goes okay. i think maybe a trip to the vet is in order.

  we know about all the unwanted animals it was just that we have several family members who would love to have one if we did have puppies as our family is big on border collies so we just didnt discount the idea, hence not getting them neutered, (this was before we had bunnies and really realised the true situation of all the unwanted animals) but we hadnt really planned to have some per se, we always seperated them while she was in her season etc. so we are more than a little surprised to be honest i dont think we would ever have had puppies in the end, it was just something we considered when we got them as puppies, which was a very long 5 years ago! i think if we were going to plan having puppies we would have done so by now lol but yes i understand your point of view beka

  oh i understand stuff happens, believe me i know! and we’ve all started out at places of no knowledge. keep us posted, i’d like to know what happens.

  Well, I think there’s nothing like a quick trip to the vet to find out for sure. (Borrow a stethescope and listen for multiple heartbeats?) You’ll want to make sure she’s eating right and what to do immediately after as well. Maybe make an appointment to have her neutered in a few months while you’re there. Then get ready with pens and stuff for puppies!
  If the vet can get an idea of how many and whether they will likely be healthy, you might want to alert the family members to the possibility so they can decide if they really do want one, have an idea of when, and also prepare for a new arrival or two.

  Yes, I agree a trip to the vet is in order and if she happens to not be pregnant it would be a good time to make an appointment for a spay.

  I too really hope it is just a phantom pregnancy! It sounds as though you would be responsible enough to ensure that the pups went to good homes, but I would still have her spayed either way as keeping two intact dogs together is very stressful for everyone concerned… not to mention the associated risks with uterine and testicular cancer in dogs. I neuter all of mine because it helps create a more balanced, harmonious relationship between them…something i think is important for all animals that have to co-exist in the same household.
  
  My aunt intentionally bred her dogs last year and convinced herself that it was ‘best to have one litter before being neutered’ although that is complete nonsense, and really she knew that. Maybe it’s just me, but I absolutely hate the idea of breeding my pets. I think it’s because I treat them like children and breeding them taints that! Anyway, she had six beautiful pups, one of which they kept and she vowed never to breed again as she found the whole experience harrowing and stressful. She hadn’t thought about how difficult it would be to let those pups go and it tore her apart. It didn’t help that the mum became so poorly and nearly died 🙁 Anyway, needless to say she had all of her dogs neutered not long after the pups were rehomed!!
  
  Good luck Kimberley, I’m sure you know what you are doing and I know if you do end up with pups you will do your best by them and find them the best homes. I LOVE border collies!!!! We are just about to rehome and rehabilitate a 5 year old boxer called Winston so that takes our dog count up to three!! Don’t think we could cope with much more or else I would have puppy-napped from you ha ha!

  I also make sure all my animals are neutered/spayed as soon as their age allows it.
  
  I just wouldn’t take the risk of one of them getting pregnant.
