Hi – I am a big fan of ths site and need some advice. I have allergies and have 1 pet rabbit (who I worhsip) and am thinking of taking another bun from a friend of my sisters. Has anyone with bad allergies gotten a second bunny? How have you/do you feel. I am also concerned about Baby since is she very sweet and I don’t want to upset her — the second bunny is also female. Thoughts on bonding the 2 females? I love being a bunny slave but am mainly concerned that the second rabbit may put me into a really bad allergy state. I take 2 meds every day the way it is and can’t be put on anything stronger. The other bunny is being neglected – it’s about 1.5 yrs old and is left alone in a cage 24/7 – and has never been out of it’s cage before and I am just heart sick about this poor little thing………Thanks –BunnyMama

oh good. you started a new thread! i do not have any experience with allergies, but do you know what it is you are allergic to? is it the fur, or the hay? some people are allergic to the hay but they think it is b/c of the bunny. i’ve heard folks say that certian breeds of bunnies aggravate their allergies more. what kind is yours and what kind is your friends… if you know? also, are both rabbits spayed? two females are the hardest to bond, so it is imperative they are both altered before they are introduced.

Thanks Binky — I am allergic to the hay for sure – the rabbits  — I wasn’t initially when I got Baby ( I was tested).  Baby is a netherlands dwarf or so I was told but she seems to be a little bigger than dwarfs. The other rabbit is a lion’s head rabbit which I don’t know anything about. Thanks for your thoughts.  Bunny Mama

Here’s a suggestion: Try to find another bunny slave to take in this little bunny. You know much more about what she needs, and may know other people you trust to help out. That way the bunny is saved but you are not risking your health. I know enough about allergies to mention that they work on a threshold basis, and if you exceed your limit you can really suffer. If you are maxed out with your meds, I think it is very risky for you.

It sounds like a second rabbit wouldn’t be a good idea for you. The increase in fur and hay activity would probably be too much for you. It stinks but sometimes you actually have to come BEFORE the buns. If you’re out of commission – then the buns dun get their treats!

Do you take both your medications at the same time? I’m allergic to, well, everything (yes I tested positive to everything, tech was kind of stunned) and I take 2 meds for it – one in the morning and one at night. Spreading it out that way seems to keep the symptoms controlled more than taking them both at once and having them both wear off at the same time. Also a doctor recently suggested to me that for the medicated nasal spray I can actually use it more than once a day if I feel I need to, which I hadn’t known before.

Without keeping the allergies under control I seriously doubt I’d be able to handle all the pets we have.

Thanks everyone –well I take a zyrtec D twice a day (morning and bedtime) since they work for 12 hours each. I also take the nasal spray in the morning.  Gosh I’m really gonna ponder this – I am so heart sick about the little thing in a cage, never getting out, and absoleutely NO human attention. Keep the advice coming and thanks..  Baby was a rescue bunny and I just adore here she is a free range bunny (confined to a bedroom when we are at work)otherwise she has freedom of the main floor of the house and she never gets locked in her cage -ever….Gosh I love bunnies…Bunny Mama

i know you really feel for this little bun but i agree that you should try and find another home for him. lionheads need more grooming as they have longer fur, and that in itself would likely make your allergies worse.

OK Binky Bunny sells Meadow Mix hay here that is an alternative to timothy hay if you have allergies.  You might try that and see if it helps.  Also make sure you vacuum and clean really well daily and it should help.

For me – what makes the allergies the worst is the hay. To combat this problem – I bought covered cat litterboxes for the bunny litterboxes and put the hay in there (do you know what I mean? They are those igloo looking litterboxes, you can even get one with doors!)

Another thing that has helped me immensley when it comes to my allergies is wearing one of those painter type masks, I get them for cheap at Big Lots. I use them when I am grooming the bunnies and also when I am giving them their hay.

With a new bunny you are never quite sure how your allergies would react. Do you feel that the neglected bunny is in danger? If so, you could consider fostering her until you find her a new home, however, you’d have to make sure you don’t get too attached if the allergies are very severe with this bunny. Its also important to keep in mind that its never really sure how long it takes to find a bunny a new home, so if your allergies do act up it may be awhile before new bun has a new home.

How does the Zyrtec compare with Claritin? I’ve been taking the Claritin 24hr every morning and the Nasocort spray every evening. I have found that sometimes when dealing with the hay my allergies seem to be worse.  Actually I’ve been taking the generic allergy stuff from Costco since it’s a fraction of the price of Claritin.

Good ideas everyone, I want to try the Meadow Mix.

Five of us in my family have allergies. My kids get shots, take 2 antihistamines, including Loratadine (Claritin) in the morning & the other at night. They use Nasonex (great stuff by the way), Q-var, an inhaler that works in the lungs like Nasonex in the nose. Then Albuterol for emergencies.
It’s alot to take, but helps.
We started going to a board certified allergist in Feb. just weeks after getting both our rabbits. Both my girls tested positive for timothy hay & one for rabbits & he gives shots for animals our other Dr. didn’t. He said the most important thing we can do is keep the rabbits & hay out of the bebrooms. Also wash hands & change clothes after holding your rabbits. It’s no good to take meds & shots if your irritant is laying on your bed all night.

Do you have a board certified allergist? If not I could help you get a good one in your area.
Is your bunny kept out of your bebroom? You said she has freedom of the main floor.
Do you have any other pets?

I wouldn’t bring another bunny into your home untill you get your allergies under control.

Gosh everyone -thanks so much for your insight. Regarding my allergies – I have had them all my life but not as traditionally with sneezing, runny nose and itchy eyes but with extreme sore throat and some times swollen glands. I took allergy shot for about 15 years and although I felt somewhat better it became a money issue when I changed jobs and then didn’t have ins coverage for it.  I just felt like after going for 15 years I should have felt much better than I did and I wasn’t getting enough of a benefit from it so I stopped. When I got Baby (my current bun) I was tested and my allergist almost had a stroke – literally – she was not a happy camper.  The meds sorta keep me in check but I really suffer at different times of the year (I have allgergies to most fur and feathered friends, grass, trees, mold, pollen, dust, smoke, etc). Zyrtec D is the stongest thing I’ve been on the D has the decongestant and I’m not drowsy from it.  I also take generic flonase.  My miracle drug was seldane until I was loosing my hair and they took it off the market — it was good stuff. Nothing has ever even come close for me.  Another issue I have is acid stomach reflux which left unchecked will cause post nasal drip and then gets my allergies all wigged out and I become a real mess.  I’ve had Baby for 2 years and I figure I never feel good anyway so why not have a pet. I couldn’t be without Baby now.

Regarding the 2nd bunny – my sister went and saw her today and sent a pic of this really cute little lions mane rabbit — I am going to take her, she is not in danger in her current home but is just terribly neglected.  If my allergies get really bad that I am constantly sick, then my sister has agreed to take her since she is equally upset about the conditions that this poor little bun has been in.

So this week I will be back many times searching the site on bonding and reading my bunny care books I have. I’ll keep you posted and I need a really good name –she is completely black with black eyes – tomorrow I will try and have my husband help me post the pic….thanks everyone again…. you are the best bunny slave supporters!!!!!!!!

Grammyb – wow you are are taking some heavy duty drugs – I’m curious how the shots are going so far — read my other post at the bottom about my experience with shots.   I did get one steriod shot once and I loved it but then when it wore off I felt alot worse than I had before the shot I wanted a second shot within like 3-4 weeks and it should have lasted me like 6 weeks so that wasn’t going to work.   The bunny does come into my room and I know I shouldn’t let her but she follows me around and she sits on a little rug next to my bed and waits for me to wake up (4am, 5am,6am, 7am) to scratch her nose while I am still laying in bed — I just don’t have the heart to keep her out of there. But you are right – I should let her in my bedroom and I didn’t for a long time.  I only go to my allergist when I am very sick which has only been 1 since I got Baby…Good luck with those meds —–and thanks –Bunny Mama

Hi ScooterandAnnette — I took claitin for a while but it wasn’t strong enough — read my post below.  The Zyrtec D adds another whole level of decongestant into the mix.  The hay doesn’t really seem to bother me –that and her cage are currently in a bedroom that I do not sleep in. That is about the only good thing I am doing. I should keep her out of my room but just can’t –see my other post below (i’m a bunny nose scratching slave day and night for Baby).

                                      Thanks –BunnyMama

Moobunnay-  good ideas about the covered litterbox for hay —one issue Baby has is a re-occurring eye infection in the same eye — 4 times to the vet now I think.  I have literally changed everything to combat the problem but the last 3 things I changed were – taking the bed skirts off my beds because I thought when she runs under the bed, it may be scraping her eye — I put a heat/ac  air vent redirector on the floor vent where she likes to lay so that the air no longer blows directly on her and I removed her hay box — it was a box that had hay and 2 doors in it but it was enclosed and I had already changed batches of hay so I got rid of that and now her hay is in a very shallow box that is open.  She has not had an eye issue since early March so I’m keeping my fingers crossed.  She does not each much hay so I don’t have to fill it very often.  I’ll keep your ideas in mind for sure…..thanks much

i’m glad that bun is going to get out of there. you are going to get her spayed before trying to bond right? i think this time apart will allow you to see how your allergies react, and if they get worse, your sister can take her and your Baby won’t be heartbroken b/c they will not be bonded.

Bunnymama – wow, those allergies just sound brutal! I’m so sorry you have to deal with it. This certainly may be quite the challenge for your allergies, but I am glad you have a “out” route to go if things get too bad.

In the future, if you ever get another bunny, you may want to consider a Rex breed. their short tight fur seems to work better for some people with allergies.

Keep us updated on how it goes. Sending ANTI-allergy vibes your way!

                                              Okay – so:

Enclosed a pic of Baby my current bun and will be taking ownership of the female Lions Head rabbit soon.

I will get her fixed BUT, Is it okay to keep her in a cage for 2-4 weeks after spaying in an area where Baby has access to until I can try to bond? I am concerned about upsetting the new bun. I have another bedroom where I can put the new bun until bonding time but I don’t hink it’s a good idea to have the new girl in a cage and then Baby running all around it. waiting for the 2-4 weeks to pass.

I am nervous about this bonding thing -didn’t realize it was so complicated.

                                              I guess my gameplan is

take possession of new bun and get fixed

wait 2 – 4 weeks before starting bonding process and keep new rabbit in a bedroom where Baby can’t see it until bonding starts.

After the 4 weeks pass, start bonding process in neutral bathroom downstairs -then move new bun and cage into kitchen where Baby can see her whenever she comes out and new bun will have cage and good size running area outside of cage.

Hope that they will bond so that they can both share one bedroom with their separate cages.

Does this sound okay to everyone?  Thanks –BunnyMama

your plan sounds good, but please realize you may need to change things up. there is no telling how either bun will react. we can offer advice based on what we know and our own experiences, but everybun is different. at least you have a safety net here on BinkyBunny, so if something seems to not be working, you can ask and we can maybe suggest another way.

your bun is gorgeous! i love the “wild bunny” coloring!

I’m glad to report that months after getting the second rabbit my allergies are not any worse then they were before. I am however still in bonding and so both rabbits are confined to a bedroom. Once bonded and they hop free range it might change. They will then both have access to my bedroom where I sleep. I will post again if /when they ever bond and have full access to my room.

If  your allergies are better now that Baby isn’t going in your bedroom, perhaps you could keep them both out of your bedroom when they are bonded.  Baby will understand because she’s used to it now, and the newby won’t know better .  Of course, it’s your head, just a suggestion.

Due to internet access problems…I’ve been on BB very infrequently.  I did want to post some input on allergies & asthma.

Acid reflux is very common w/ people w/ asthma–though I can’t remember why.  There are different types of asthma, one is more of a heavy cough rather than constant wheeze.  The cough one is often misdiagnosed as not being asthma.  The best thing for allergies/asthma is to limit your pets in your sleeping areas.  So NO PETS in the BEDROOM (sorry bunny snugglers).  I also use air purifiers, one in the bedroom & one in the bunny room.

My bunny allergies are only a problem for me during molting.  Else, they don’t produce enough fur to rattle my chain.  Glad to hear all worked out bunnymama!
