        Hey everyone,

I’m in the process of building a NIC condo for Smudge. I have completed the frame and started putting in the shelves. I was just wondering if anyone who has built something like this before has any ideas for supporting shelves? Or if you found they needed supporting at all? I looked at the pictures here and some other ones online and noticed some people using wood or dowels, so I’m considering just using those. Any other input would be great!

I have several shelves in mine that are steps to get to the higher levels.  I support them with pieces of 1×2 lumber.  On one shelf I hang the support from the floor of the level above it, drilling a hole in each end of the brace and then zip tying it to the floor above and to the shelf.  On another one, I have the support under the shelf, and resting on the floor below it.  If you can put the shelf in a corner, you can tie it into both walls and that is sufficient support to make it stay up.

Thanks thats great! My two main levels are both anchored to corners and they are staying up they’re just not very strong in the middle of them.. but I think I might be overestimating the weight of my bun. I still haven’t decided whether it would be better for her to have a ramp from on level to the next or to have a little shelf in between to act as a step. This cage has been quite a process haha! But I’m sure she’s going to love it when it’s done.

How much does your rabbit weigh? Some rabbits take a while to get used to how high up the levels are, I have steps and a ramp for my two, even though they are large enough to jump up to the next level without them, however they are too shy to jump up there without assistance. You could run a dowel diagonally accross underneath as well. I opted not to use the wood bracing and went for the more secure & structurally sound method by placing a panel underneath to support the levels above all the way up through the middle of the cage.

Here is how my so far one shelf is supported. I attached the NIC panel shelf with zip ties and then used a wooden dowl underneath for support and just zip tied it to the NIC panels.

I’ve just used carboard for the shelf and velcroed Indoor/Outdoor carpet to it.   Flopsy chews on the carboard but I figure it’s replacable.

Next pay cheque I’ll be buying more NIC panels and making the condo  another level higher, so the shelf will be more of a step. Also the shelf at this time is only about 1/2 way up a square NIC panel cause I wasn’t sure if my chubby  bunny could make it any higher, but after seeing her jump up to this shelf I’m probably going to move it up a tad bit more so a corner litter box will fit underneath that shelf.
