We saw an oppossum two nights ago. Oh my goodness, how I love oppossums!!! I had always wanted to see one! We live by a canyon but I haven’t seen too many wild animals around. I have been living in the US for 8 years now and am just fascinated by the wild animals here.

I have seen longhorns and one armadillo from very far away when I lived in Texas (I was in east TX, in the middle of nowhere). And cockroaches. Many of them!!! I happen to like cockroaches very much! A tarantula and a scorpion. Uh…

Here in CA, I have heard many coyotes but I have never seen one in real life. I recently saw a skunk (beautiful animal!!! Though when they spray, it makes me want to hang over the toilet) and about two months ago, there were two raccoons in my backyard. One raccoon was right by the sliding door, playing with a tennis ball. Amazing! I had no idea they were so large! Of course, I’ve seen many eagles here, too. I once found a garden snake by my tire (grabbed it and released it into the canyon) and there are many black widows here (I am scared stiff of spiders!). A centipede… oh! And HUGE lizards! They almost look like pets! One-foot long body! We found two in the house! Well, the last one was smaller (about 15 cm). So beautiful!

Where I grew up, these animals don’t exist in the wild (not that I know of).

Which kind of wild animals do you have in your neighborhood?

Black widows?  EEEKKKKS. They scare me too.  We have deer, opposums, raccoons, TURKEYS, ducks, bobcats.  Opposums and raccoons can be very nasty so be careful!

i live on 4 acres, half of which is wooded. we currently have a mama, papa and 4 baby foxes. they have reduced the rest of the wild-life.

previously: a wild turkey (weird looking!), many rabbits, raccoons, possums, skunks (ew), several deer, groudhogs (or woodchucks, not sure) and squirrels a-plenty. there is also a stray (?) cat, altho i think it’s the neighbor’s outdoor cat. my grandpa feeds her, so she keep coming around. my grandfather (it’s his property… we rent) humanely traps the animals sometimes and relocates them to a wooded park. he used to do it more often when he was gardening, but now he only does it occasionally. the foxes he is tryng to relocate b/c they keep killing everything else.

We’ve had several Mountain Lion sightings in our neighborhood over the last few years.  The deer come down from the hills to munch on our irrigated gardens, and the Mountain Lions follow the deer.  It is not like our area is exactly rural, either.

I have 2 wild rabbits living on my street, they live under peoples stoops and area always hanging around. I was hoping that they are male and female so that maybe I would get to see some baby wild buns but no luck yet. We also have deer that come up from the wildlife park I live near. Last year was probably the best, there was a moose in our back alley… it came up from the park, a young buck who was very lost. The poor thing. Animal control managed to herd him back to the park before he caused any damage or hurt himself.

When I lived in Arizona we had Javalina (wild boars), coyotes, scorpions and tarantula.

In Denver we have tones of prairie dogs, hawks, coyotes, lots of beautiful red fox, bunny’s, deer, raccoons, Gardner snakes, and mice. All kinds of animals – it is so cool!
I have found Black Widows in my house – very pretty. But, are nothing compared to Brown Recluse – very scary!

When I lived in Boulder we had deer in our yard every day and even once a bear -he was gorgeous! If you are lucky you might even catch a glimpse of a Lynx or a Mountain lion, – I have never seen them in the wild, but they are around.

I work in the Berkeley hills and on the campus of the lab, there is a flock of wild turkeys that roam the area. In addition, there are a couple of deer and I just saw mama with two babies earlier this week.

is it not scary at times to know that so many animals are living close by especially when its wild dogs and bears and stuff?

I’m more scared of humans. Got to watch one guy brain another with a cane the other night because he was called a name. Never had a wild animal come at me yet – and that includes the mountain lion that popped out of the bushes about 10 yards in front of me.

We have Kangaroos, snakes, rabbits, pelicans, water fowls, water rats, foxes, ducks, geese and swans. Most probably more but I can’t think of any.

When I lived in the out back we had Kangaroos aboriginal word is Marloo, we also had wedge tail eagles, pink and grey galahs, emus and huge lizards, about 4 to 5 feet long.

                              What are opposums?

Opossums are members of the Marsupial family, black and white in color, very long pointy snouts and bald tails.  They look a bit like giant rats.  We have them around here too, in addition to skunks (oy, lots of skunks), raccoons, black and gray squirrels, cottontail rabbits and big jack rabbits, and occasionally a deer or two.  Lots of lizards, and during the rainy season we get many salamanders too.

Oh wow, lots of animals in everyone’s back yards. I have seen raccoons, skunks and foxes during the normal course of the year. The most shocking one was a bobcat!!!! I live in the suburbs too and this was when there were some major forest fires and most animals were fleeing and I have a creek very close to the house and they follow it down sometimes.

my parents live about 5 minutes away form us (in the heart of suburbia) and often in the morning they can look out the front window and see a couple deer walking down the street in their DEVELOPMENT. there’s not even any woods nearby. business and homes are just choking out the wild life.

This morning I saw a wild bunny using a cross-walk to get across a road.
                                      Smart bunny!

The wild animals are far more scared of us than we are of them. Plus the really don’t want to interact with us.

The one time I had a bare in my yard – I was so excited. I just sat very quietly and watched him.

A friend of mine – in Aspen, CO – had a bear come into her house – the door was open because they had just cleaned the carpets, he left very clear foot prints. The bear went down 2 hallways, up a flight of stairs, down another hallway into her office and stole the bag of chocolate inside a drawer in her desk. He then followed his tracks to find his way out of the house. The only damage was dirty carpets and a slightly scratched up desk!
