I was wondering… Do you have any pets other than rabbits?

We have 19 rescue rats. I volunteer with a small animal rescue here in town (WeeCompanions) and with a county animal shelter. All our rats (and the bunnies) are rescued animals, we do not breed anybody (us included).

        We are owned by

Galileo, 38 months (min.) young, very alert and active (well, as active as an old man can be!), very strong! He has outlived all his companions and is now too old for integrations (it stresses him out too much).

Vasco (adopted from WeeCompanions). He is around 2 years old, an absolute lovebug, cannot get enough of us! He is always out with us on the couch. He loves, loves, loves us humans but greatly dislikes other rats. He almost killed his brother Rossi so we had to seperate them about a year ago.

Rossi. Very shy, does not like to be handled at all, he is scared stiff of other rats but loves to come out in the rat room (by himself). Yes, we have a rat room instead of human children… Rossi comes out at around 10pm and goes back into the cage at 6am when I get up.

Ian. I adopted him two weeks ago from WeeCompanions. He almost killed one of his brothers, then he was out to mutilate his other brother and that’s when we had to seperate them at the rescue. Ian has always had that thing for me. He was never handled much, there was a big CAUTION sign by his cage… but he allowed me touch him. I finally took him home because he is unadoptable, so I might as well take him. He LOVES his new life! He loves the rat room, he loves his very large cage (three feet by three feet by three feet, the bulkiest cage we have) and he loves his mommy! YAY!

Kilo. I just adopted him 12 days ago from the county animal shelter. He is the largest ratboy I have ever seen. He doesn’t weigh all that much for his size (780grams) but boy, is he large!!! His housing situation was miserable at the shelter, he was so depressed there that he stopped grooming himself. Awful. After his third week there (very important not to bring in any rats after a proper quarantine time of three weeks), I adopted him and gave him a huge ferret cage. He is so happy! Happy with everything. His humans, his cage, his room, his food – he is so very easy to please and he is just … happy! A complete lover, too.

Those are our single boys. It is rather unusual for rats to live in solitude, rats are very, very social creatures, but the five we have (except for Kilo) will never live with other rats because of their history. There is hope for Kilo to be introduced to one of our existing groups, so he can live with them for the rest of his life.

        Our groups…

There is Nudity, a group of five  naked rats. There used to be six, but sadly, Nackig passed away very unexpectedly. Nudity came to us when they were tiny little rats looking more like shrimp than anything else. There was no momma rat and since they were naked, we were asked to nurture them until they were big enough to be adopted out. Well, Nackig made me fall in love with him the second I laid my eyes upon him so we decided to keep the two boys. When they reached breeding age, we seperated the four girls from the boys but they were still so tiny that we had to keep them a while longer… until it was too late for our hearts. We couldn’t part from them. We got the four girls spayed and the boys back in with them. They are 27 months old now, which is a very proud age for naked rats! They think they are babies and my husband and I only see the babies in them. We haven’t had many baby rats over here because we tend to adopt the older ones (since it’s harder to adopt them out).

Miracle and his boy. There used to be five in that group but sadly, one by one, they have left us. Miracle is older than John and he is his protector. Miracle has always protected his four boys (they are not related to each other), he protected them so much that he would bite anybody coming too close to his boys. One day, he bit a very cherished volunteer so hard that she ended up in hospital. When three of his boys got sick, I decided to take them home. They got healthy and lived a long time with us. Miracle is probably around 33 months or so while John is around 30 months. Sadly, John has heart disease and so does Miracle (with a URI). They won’t be staying with us for much longer.

My group of four one-year-old rats. They all came from the shelter at seperate times. Three girls (Coda, Sabrina and Catherine) and Cado. They are around one year old, Coda came to us in December of 2007, Catherine came to us in March 2008. Totally goofy rats, full of energy and spunk! They were not doing well at the shelter, Catherine almost died of an infection in her uterus (nobody noticed, of course! GAH!)… I just had to take them home.

And then there are my three boys in the bedroom. Absolute butterballs. They have always lived freely in our bedroom. They sleep with us, they use our bed as theirs, they are so spoiled, it’s beyond believe. They are two years old now, they came to us as three little baby boys, companions to our beloved Duncan (who has passed away peacefully at a very proud age). Since Duncan was a free ranger, we had to allow his three little boys to be free in the bedroom, too. Oh my, how many sleepless nights was it? When they were babies (and even now), they sometimes would want to play in the middle of the night. They would tug on the sheets, run across our bodies over and over again, stare into our faces until that woke us up … pretty funny to wake up to a rat staring at you with that look ” Can we play now???”. Our three little butterballs Stradakuhs, Benji and Rocky (though his daddy always calls him Nike). They were abandoned on a highway here in San Diego when a volunteer found them and brought them to WeeCompanions.

After my novel of our beloved kids, you may type your story now! Haha! Sorry, when it comes to my kids, I just can’t keep quiet and make it short. I could write and write about them in forever! They are all so very wonderful; rats are magical!

I would have never thought I could love bunnies just as much!

Sorry this is so long guys. I feel the need to properly introduce myself and I can only do that if I talk about my ratties, too. Oh ja, and I have a husband. Luckily, he grew up with rats, so we match! Oh, I guess he is not a pet, huh? K, no more about him then… Haha!

Ok, first of all, three rats sleep in your bed? Aren’t you scared you will roll over on them and hurt them???

Wow, I didn’t know all that about rats—-you can get them spayed and neutered? They are so little though! (Do you have pics of your big clan?)

How do you keep them all straight and know all the names!? Haha crazy. Are most of them in cages then and separated? Do they get along w/ your buns?

Well, I don’t have any other pets, just Boston although someday I’d like another bunny and a dog!

We are used to sleeping with them. We have been sleeping with rats in the bedroom for… four years or so? I guess it’s comparable to a mom sleeping with her newborn baby. It’s instinct. We don’t roll over them, we know they are right there. Sometimes, all three of them are rolled up right next to me, sometimes, nobody is there. Though we sleep with them, I do not recommend it for everybody because yes, it can be dangerous if you are not used to it.

Yes, neutering and spaying rats is possible. Actually, spaying females is highly recommended in order to avoid the growth of tumors. Of course, we have to take them to an exotic vet and it costs us an arm and a leg, but it’s all worth it. Our rats (and now the rabbits, too) are our only big expense apart from the mortgage on our house. We don’t spend money on anything else but them.

HAHA, did you seriously ask me for pictures? HAHA! I have a MILLION of them!!! See, how I had a hard time to shut up about my kids? Once I start posting pictures… you will beg me to quit that! HAHA! I will see if I can find one of each group and hopefully I will limit myself to that.

Every rat is completely different. They look different to us, we know them, they have totally different personalities… to us, it is very easy to keep them apart. Yes, they all have names and they all know their names, too. Basically, rats are like little dogs. They are supersmart and remember things and people, too. Truly, they are like magic.
Our rats live in huge, huge ferret cages (the boys in the bedroom have two cages in the bedroom but the cages are always open). I don’t like to keep anybody in cages though, so we rotate the groups out. Everybody gets to come outside every single day. I am very obsessed with that. I will not go to bed unless everybody has had playtime.

We keep the rats absolutely seperate from the bunnies. They do not get to interact. Ever. When the bunnies stretch, they can reach up to three of the cages, but Velvet and Dancer leave the rats alone. They ignore each other and we want to keep it that way, too.

Yes, I’m a complete nutcase, but you know what? Life has never been better! The fact that all our kids were unwanted at some point or another makes it all worth it. We want to offer paradise on earth to the less fortunate ones. It makes me feel good to see them sleep happily without any worries in clean cages with plenty of food and clean water and with companions (or not) and just being happy. They are very important to us!

Oh, rats are wonderful! I try to tell people that when they’re looking for dorm-appropriate pets, but most people recoil at the thought of the tails (stupid) or think they’ll give them the plague (stupider). I get a lot of, “Oh, but what about hamsters? Your hamster was so wonderful…” and I have to explain that my late hammy Swiffer was the exception, not the rule, but that he acted a lot like a rat……

But well, I’m a crazy rodent (and lagomorph) lady.

As far as other pets go, I’m the proud mommy to a BEEEG chinchilla named Baxter who has, in a year of living with us, gone from one of the most timid, unapproachable animals I’ve ever had to the sweetest chinchilla I’ve ever met. Seriously, he is one adorable little bugger. He’s getting a very shiny new wheel soon; he chewed through his last one (as chinchillas are prone to do) so he’s getting an indestructable metal disc. (This: http://www.chin-chillas.com/Runner/runner.gif — though, that’s not Baxter. Baxter’s a (mostly) white chinchilla.) I hope he’ll like it!

I don’t currently have any other pets; one chinchilla and two(at school)/three(at home because one’s my mom’s) bunnies take up enough space!

Wow, impressive group! We have a bunny room, due to finances it will never become the dining room I envisioned back when we bought the house. At one point I had my 2 cats & dog…Max, TC & Oz. My boyfriend had 3 dogs, Azzariah, Habba and Rocky. We adopted 2 more cats Pumpkin and Sammy and took in my brother’s Lab Beau when he could no longer walk up 3 flights of stairs to my brother’s apartment. All of the dogs were the same age when we got together, so in the past 3 years most of them have crossed the bridge. We only have Rocky left and he is about 12 ( the rest were 16 to 20 years old!) TC is pushing 19-20, Sammy is 8.

My first rabbit Fu, we had for 8 years. I had found her on the streets so not sure how old she was to start with. Shadow will be one in Jully.

liza i loved reading about your happy furry (and not-so-furry) family!  before i adopted my very first bun bun i was actually planning to get a rat.  back then i didn’t know a thing about rescued animals so i went to a local pet store in search of a rat and binky boy – a grey lop who had only one ear lopped at the time – won me over.  when i told my grandpa (who owns the house i live in) about my plans to have a pet rat he flipped out.  lol.  he doesn’t understand the whole idea of rats as pets since he was a farmer for many years and i’m sure having survived terrible conditions during ww2 has an influence on him still.

i am a proud ‘mom’ to 2 buns… baby the nearly 8 yr old lop who is a breast cancer survivor… bogart the 6 1/2 yr old mutt who is the object of baby’s affection… and pinky the year old new zealand white who i adopted from the shelter earlier this year.

Question? How long do rats live?

I have to admit, I’m pretty naive about rats. How big do they get? The whole concept kind of grosses me out even though I had a friend that had a rat. I think I would have to like see and play with them and I would be okay with it! Pictures would help!!! Load them on ladies!!!

Yes, I am on a rat forum as well. I have been there for … 7 years almost.

I am looking through my pictures to see which ones to post… I will post those of our current kids. Rats are very, very good companions. They cheer me up, they give me love, they are super clean – they are very, very wonderful!

Ian and I. Haha! He makes me look so tiny!

Above, you can see Kilo his very first time running in the room. That’s not his cage, his cage is on a table, it’s a huge cage. That cage is always in the room for the rats to go into hammocks, have a waterbottle and climb around.

This is Ian. His eyes are cloudy, he is older, too. We don’t know why his eyes are like that. It’s as if he was dead. There is no gloss to them. They have been getting better here, but just a little. Ian is so happy to enjoy freedom! Every morning, he comes out in the room for two hours.

Ian on his first day home in his old cage.

My very old man Galileo. Isn’t he cute??? Look at those big eyes and his long, long nose! He got that one from his mommy. Hehhee!

Again Galileo. I always sing to him… Bohemian Rapsody, Queen.

Hahaha!!! This is Nudity, my pile of five naked rats.

I need to load the other ones… before everything crashes over here….

The naked ones—will they always be naked? is it kind of a breed of rats?

Can’t remember the big ones name, but how much does he weigh? Is he a different kind then the others?

Wow, you must be patient to take care of all those rats and have a very patient hubby too!!!

They are all absolutely adorable! I always wanted a rat but my mom is not too fond… she grew up on a farm I think that might have something to do with it. Besides my bun my has a dog named Pepper who we rescued from a shelter and my goldfish Rufus, who believe it or not is also a rescue. My boyfriend has a pond in his backyard and Rufus was a baby who was born a little too early and managed to survive the cold. I rescued him before he could be eaten or frozen. and he is currently growing and eating at a massive rate!

I also like rats. (great pics by the way) I find them cute and fascinating. I would have one if I didn’t already have so many animals (3 buns, 4 cats, 1 horse). There is man in my city who runs a rat rescue.

Awwww, thank you all! You guys make my heart all fuzzy! I am so very proud of my rats and bunnies!

                                                      To answer a few questions…

Haha! No, that’s Rocky’s lip! It’s not his tongue hanging out. Haha! Rocky recently passed away. We have his brother here who looks just like him.

Rats usually don’t live very long. In most cases, rats need help to pass away (euthanasia with gas at the vet’s). We have had a few hamsters too and three of them were dead all of a sudden. Only very rarely does that happen with rats. Once they reach 2 years, that’s awesome! Anything beyond that is extra super time and every little second needs to be cherished as if it was the last one together. We have had rats that needed help to pass at the very young age of only one year old but we have also had others who were over 3 years old. Galileo is our old man right now. It’s amazing how strong and alert he is at 38 months (min.)! When he came to us with his brothers, three of the four needed to be on medication, Galileo being one of them. He is such a healthy boy! He has been on antibiotics for more than half his life but is doing very well on it.

I would also like to add that most our rats come to us when they are already older. They are less trouble when they are out of the baby stage and while yes, they might have some behavioral issues at first, it doesn’t matter to us. Once they are here, they learn very quickly that they are safe and that they won’t be going anywhere else, that this is it, we are their humans, this is their house, too and it is our job to make sure they get everything they need.

The naked rats… Haha! When I first saw naked rats, I thought they were ugly. Poor rats, they have been absolutely overbred – yes, they will remain naked forever. There are people out there who purposely breed naked rats. Naked rats have a much faster metabolism than furry ones, thus they need to be kept warm, they need a lot more food and water than furry rats, they need to be kept meticulously clean or else they will develop abcesses left and right… Since they eat and drink a lot more than furry rats, they of course pee and poop more, too! Oh, the joys of cleaning out Nudity!!! I constantly clean them out. When we agreed to foster them, it was out of necessity, really. They were tiny, they needed the extra care, there was no momma, they were dropped off at the rescue without the mom… we couldn’t say no. Then, we wanted to keep the boys only but we were worried that the girls wouldn’t be taken care of properly and that they were going to be bred. The rescue charges $40 per spayed rat (that’s what they pay too to get them spayed) and there aren’t many people out there who are willing to pay $80 for a pair. Also, we were supposed to tell the rescue which ones were bonded… but they always piled up all together! We just couldn’t do it. We wrote the rescue a nice check and kept them all.

Naked rats are just like furry ones, but they smell differently. They kind of smell like human babies (I’m no fan of human babies), while furry ones smell completely different. Intact boys smell like sandelwood or cornchips while girls smell like… rose petals. I really think so. I am addicted to smelling rats. I take them in my hands and squish my nose all over them and inhale. I love it!!! Once boys get neutered, they lose that certain smell to their fur and are odorless.

Oooooh, I could write in forever about my kids! Thank you all for your very kind remarks! Oooohhh, I’m flying!!! I’m so happy you like my rats!!!

They are great! And i am glad I am learning new things! Thanks for all the wonderful info!

Yes, haha, I work! I am the Academic Director of a very large language school. Huge responsibilities… daily!
Ask me whether I have a life beside the animals! Haha! The answer is no. Our animals are our life. I get up two hours early in the morning to take care of everybody. I clean out the bunnies’ litterbox every morning, Velvet and Dancer come out and hop around the place. I switch the rats out, let Vasco out, turn on the computer, clean, clean, clean, do a wash, rotate the rats again, make the bunnies their breakfast, and then I rush to work.
I get home, rotate the rats, let the bunnies out, change my clothes (I have to dress up for work, of course), check on everyone, make dinner for the bunnies, dinner for the rats, something for us to gulp down, give medicine to my oldies, plop down on the couch with my Vasco and fall asleep (usually around 10pm at the very latest).
On Saturdays, I volunteer for 6 hours at a small animal rescue, on Sundays I walk dogs for about three hours at the county animal shelter. Since I am surrounded by many people at work and have to be polite and professional all day, in my freetime, I stay faaaar away from people.
We rarely ever go out, we go on vacation to see my parents in Europe once a year together (I usually fly out once on my own and once with my husband per year), that’s it. My life in a nutshell. AND IT’S AWESOME!!!

is vasco a different kind of rat or something? Just wondering why you fall asleep with him and let him out and stuff, is he more like a free range rat? lol

All our rats get to come out of their cages on a daily basis. Vasco is a rat, just a regular pet rat… but he is special. He is extremely bonded to us humans, he doesn’t like the rat room (the first rat ever who doesn’t like that room) but it’s because we are not in there. He wants to be with us at all times. Whenever we are home, he is out on the couch (two couches connected via an end table. I tend to fall asleep on the couch, so Vasco and I cuddle up together and sleep. When my husband goes to bed, he puts Vasco into his cage. In the morning, first thing I do is take Vasco out on the couch again. He has his comforter there and goes to sleep there after saying good morning to his mommy and daddy. He is our Prince right now (Galileo is the King). He is not bonded to all humans, just to us.
The free range rats (at all times) are the three in the bedroom (Stradakuhs, Benji and Rocky aka Nike). Yes, we sleep with them too (whenever I make it from the couch into bed).
If you entered our home, you wouldn’t be able to smell the rats or rabbits. If you saw us on the street, you would never believe we have rats as pets. People are always shocked when I mention we have pet rats. They think I’m joking. HAHA! I find it hilarious to see how superficial regular people can be! I say regular because I find we are different. We (you guys and us over here) love animals and understand they have souls, too.
