I love seeing wild rabbits. They are so beautiful. I grew up next to a big forest and I saw them almost daily in the summer. Now I”m a city girl and all I see is pigeons

we went to park today the buns weren’t out yet I luv seeing the wild ones too.

There are lots of great Open Space Trails around Denver.

Depending on the time of day I go out there – I see tons of Prairie Dogs (talk about little characters) and lots of wild bunny’s.
Late spring / early summer the Prairie Dog & Bunny mommies start to bring out all of the babies – so incredibly cute!

We went to Lake County a few weeks ago on a rock hounding trip.  Lake County is a fairly rural area about 2 hours north of San Francisco.  My daughters (particualrly the oldest) are very interested in rocks and collecting them, so we went to a couple of different sites up there to collect obsidian, quartz crystals and jasper.  One of the sites was down a dirt road through some vinyards.  One the way back out, we saw an enormous jack rabbit, agouti in color, slowly hopping down the road.  When he saw us, he leaped up into the air and landed in the brush on the side of the road, bounding away.  He must have jumped 6 feet in the air.  Seeing that reminded me why our little fur balls at home practice their binkies all the time.  It is a defense mechanism to confuse predators.  Seeing an animal jump that high in the air was pretty exciting.

We have two wild buns that live on our block.  I call them “The Bunny Brothers”, though I’ve not looked THAT closely.  I was so happy to see them this spring as I’d worried about them all winter.  Saw them the other day in the alley – one was keeping watch and the other was neatly decimating a dandelion clump.

We sometimes see bunnies at the local golf course. It’s so lovely to see them wild, but I do worry for them…myxi around and all.

We were hunting something called “Lake County Diamonds”, a kind of quartz crystal found only in California.  It is pretty amazing, you pull off the road and the red clay soil is glistening with what looks like pieces of broken bottles, but it isn’t glass, it’s quartz.  We went to another spot where big chunks of obsidian are just lying on the side of the road.  It was quite fun!

we had a couple wild buns last spring, but our new outside friends are a family of foxes… mama, dada and four itty bitty baby foxes. the babies cry all night long. they are LOUD.

and the buns are… gone.

Where I live, there are thousands of hares around. The most amazing thing happened to me last year, when on a very stormy night a tiny little maybe two day old leveret came to my door. What blew me away was that I have 5 dogs!!!! Still, she was there, trembling her tiny heart out…! I still do not know what made look out the door… but I did, she seemed very lethargic and was soaking wet out there in the storm. Ibrought her inside and fed her milk with a syringe for a couple of days. I offered her hay and kept her for four days, until she was strong enough. I did a lot of research on how to care for her. Eventually, on day 5 I released her in a hutch nearby where there was another hare family. I cried as I did, but I’m sure it was the best for her. She was the reason that I then adopted Baileys and now Lemoncello. I couldn’t get over the cuteness and tenderness of those tiny creatures. Here’s a picture of my leveret:

Yes, I have noticed you often change them. It certainly is cute!!!

There are wild bunnies in our neighborhood but rarely in our yard. I saw one in the front yard today. What can I do to encourage them to come back? Is there any food I can leave for them? I thought about leaving apples since our indoor bunnies love apples. I have never seen any buns in the backyard and have left carrots out in the back, I guess the fence on three sides discourages them?
