So, since my boyfriend and I were heading to the twin cities area for a baseball game on Monday, we decided to bring Boston and stay w/ a friend Monday night so we could take Boston to the rabbit savvy vet that I had talked to on the phone when she first got sick. Dr. Larry is the vet that was in contact with my hometown vet and who reccomended the dewormer medication for Boston and explained to my vet how to prepare it.
Basically, Dr. Larry told us what we already knew but he made Boston’s prognosis seem really grim at first. He kind of told us to prepare for the worst, that she probably won’t get better and thats she’s one of the most severe cases he’s seen. We on the other hand are thinking that Boston is getting better because she can sit and take steps when she’s in a confined area like her cage.
Here’s the kicker: The vet in my town didn’t take down Boston’s weight (I watched them weigh her and they wrote it down, but didn’t record it in a computer). So Dr. Larry called them to see what her weight was so we could decide if she was losing weight and they claim they never weighed her. On top of that, Dr. Larry went back to look at what does of the dewormer oxybendazole the vet was giving Boston, apparently, they were way off on the dose and she should have been getting a less diluted amount of medicine everyday. This led Dr. Larry to believe that maybe we will see some more improvement now that she will be getting the correct dosage.
Dr. Larry also prescribed Metcam but doesn’t want us to start it for a few days to see if the new dosage of oxybenazole helps on its own without the extra medication.
I asked about the medicine that Rabbitsmba mentioned (I can’t find the piece of paper I had it written on) and Dr. Larry said its basically an antibiotic and there’s no need to be on it. Also, I asked about the meds that BinkyBunny suggested (can’t remember the name now) and we were told that oxybendrazole is pretty much the same thing.
Boston is still eating TONS of hay and we are administering baby food cuz Boston is now under 3 pounds. Dr. Larry suggested getting Oxbow Critter Care but you can’t order it online, so I’m working on that.
Other than that….we are just celebrating the baby steps (literally!)
