Can you really feed a rabbit lilacs. I have a huge bush of it outside my building and yesterday i cut an armload and put in my kitchen for the sweet smell and pretty colors. My buns have been eyeing it ever since. Can they have a taste. It just seems like a flower that would be poisonous to me.

          no idea at all.

edited:  well the BB list says it’s okay… i am curious if anyone else has given lilac.  i have about a dozen trees in my yard… and i know for a fact they are not sprayed with anything.

i saw it on the list but i am cautious about giving it to my bunnies. i have never heard of anyone ever feeding it to rabbits. smelly purple flowers somehow doesn’t seem like a proper rabbit food

IF it was okay… i’m not saying it 100% is b/c i don’t know for sure ————> ANYONE?

but IF, i would think it would only be in very small amounts as an occasional treat. i am assuming it would not be used as a large portion of the diet.

there’s also a 50/50 chance your buns would turn their noses at it too…

Wow, first tulips, now lilacs and cherry huh?  I am seeing a virtual flower shop here.   Hee, hee must be a sure sign of spring.  Anyway, I will make a separate discussion on plants in general but these are links provided by Binky Bunny:

                  Toxic Plants:

Lilac is not listed, HOWEVER I have never given them to my two and have never heard of it being done or if it is safe or not. Now just because I have not heard about it it simply means that very little is known about it and its affect on rabbits is not known.  So, that being said, I think it is better to be safe than sorry experimenting with unknowns.  I do know however, that the wood is O.K. for birds (an entirely different species though).

so the short answer is no… just b/c there is not enough evidence showing it is safe. i agree… better safe than sorry. (i do love how they smell tho!)

This website has them on the safe list

                      http://petcaretips.net/safe-veggies-fruits-pet-rabbit.html

I’ve actually found it on MULTIPLE safe lists so I don’t see why you couldn’t give it to them as a treat. Now I would only use it as a treat though since I have no clue as to the actual nutritional value.

Another good list from medi rabbit http://www.medirabbit.com/EN/GI_diseases/Food/feeding_en.pdf

This one does not list lilac as bunny safe.

Lilacs are sometimes said to be toxic to pets, but they probably aren’t. http://homeguides.sfgate.com/lilac-bushes-poisonous-animals-81413.html The better-safe-than-sorry-principle is of course always the wisest approach. Humans can eat lilac flowers and you can make lilac cordial from them.
