Tonight I get to design a new web page for The Haven’s website describing our latest special needs rescue.  A little Rex boy who found his way to one of the shelters we pull from.  He had serious injuries on his back and sides, and it was clear the shelter was not equipped to handle him.  It was immediate rescue or the back room and a needle for him.  So of course, we took him to one of our vets to have his wounds dressed and examined, and he is now a Haven bunny.  We named him Bennie.

He had extensive lacerations and deep puncture wounds that we assumed were from a predator attack that he was lucky to have survived.  Well, after the vet examined him, we found out that we were wrong.  The wounds across his tiny body were made by A KNIFE.  Someone intentionally slashed, stabbed and punctured this little defenseless animal, then dumped him off at the shelter so they’d euthanize him.  The (expletive deleted) that did this to the bunny could not even finish the job properly and just kill him, they left him to suffer in a cage at a shelter until the shelter got around to finishing him off.  I am just at a loss for words.  Even someone who is not a bunny freak like me has to realize that they feel pain, and loneliness and despair.  They are alive, thinking, feeling beings, maybe not like us, but they deserve respect.  I just cannot fathom how someone could do this.  Perhaps a sociopath, I don’t know.  It just makes me crazy.

Benny has endured two surgeries to repair his broken body and remove some dead tissue from the wound sites.  He is now on his way to recovery.  Heather thinks it will take 2 months for him to recover fully from this torture.  He is now at one of our top medical sites, getting extra food and having his wounds irrigated and his meds given to him.  We will spend hundreds if not over a thousand dollars to repair this poor bunny.  I hope someday the karma earned for this will catch up with the perpatrator.  This person needs to be treated, there is no way a person in command of their faculties can do something like this.

I will put up a new page about Bennie either tonight or tomorrow.  If you have the stomach for it, you can see what he’s going through then.  I am sorry that this turned into a novel, I just know the people here will understand my frustration.  I’ll leave you with a hopeful picture of Bennie, snuggling with one  of his special caretakers.

I have a feeling that Bennie will be fine, if no other reason than to show his abuser that he actually doesn’t have the power of life and death over him.

Oh my god I have no words to describe how I feel.  That darling little defenseless creature. I just hope that person suffers in every sense of the word.  Thank god there are people out there who could help this little guy.  I am so sick about this.

When I hear stories like this it makes me ashamed to be a part of the human race. And it’s so frustrating when there are no laws to help animals in need who have been tortured and neglected. Volunteering for a rescue, I’ve seen my share as well. I’ve even stood before two police officers holding a rabbit whose ears had been sliced off, pointing at the man who did it – nothing was done….

Bennie will join the ranks of many abused rabbits who before him, conquered unsurmountable odds and survived the unsurvivable. He will heal, he will recover and upon hearing his heartbreaking story, will be scooped up by a super-loving home where he will live the rest of his days in bunny bliss. This is my wish for him.

Thanks to everyone involved who are helping this poor soul. You are the ones who restore my faith in humanity.

Oh my gosh – that is horrible! I wonder if he was an owner surrender and if they can go after this person. I do know however with some of our shelters they put the rabbit down as an owner surrender even if the rabbit is a stray so they can get the rabbit into a rescue since so few of our shelters are equipped for rabbits – so if that’s the case then they won’t have anyone to pursue.

I’m glad the little one is in good hands now. Humans who do this to anyone are scary indeed and need serious help or need to be locked up in a jail.

I know Benny will find a wonderful home. It’s sad but important to let people know of these types of situations – we cannot wear blinders to animals suffering at the hands of humans.

There are all types of people out there and I have long stopped trying to understand such actions.  Is it environmental, genetic, mental instability, etc.  There are bad people just as there are good people.

I’ll be making a donation to The Rabbit Haven for Benny as soon as I find out if my company has a Corporate Matching Program or not.

You know, I had all these plans for my tax rebate and for some reason I think almost all of it is going to be going to buns in need.

karma’s a biotch.  i have to believe it since the %@^# who did this remains at large.  i do not want to shelter myself from hearing about situations like this.  but i get mad and then change my focus on the good parts.  i’m so glad bennie has found his way to the haven!  he’s beautiful.

Osprey do let us know if the shelter can and will do anything about this – they have the vet as a witness to this poor little rabbit’s injuries.

people who did this to Benny should be shot…really!!

there is no excuse for such “behavior”. Hopefully someone witnessed this, and will come forward. That person needs professional help, or who knows, what will be next…

I am glad for Benny, that he is in GOOD HANDS now. He looks like a “tough” guy. He will be healing!!!

*hugs* to Benny, and thank you for people like you, osprey!!!

                                XOXOXO

I’m in tears. On hearing these stories, I feel both shame and pride. Shame on the insensitive, sick sociopath who has no value for life and dares do such a terrible deed. And pride to belong to a race where there are people like you, who do care and feel and understand. Animals do feel. Animals DO THINK. ANIMALS DO SUFFER. What does it take for some people to understand that?????? And SCIENTIFIC RESEARCH has proved that. Now there is evidence to this. As a Dog Trainer, I am updated with all the latest research in the field of ethology and I can assert that with all certainty. Actually, the latest methods in Dog Training work around these concepts: Cognitive – Emotional Training.

Anyway, I only wish I lived nearer. I would love to give that baby a forever home. I’d love for him to honour me with his love and trust.

I only hope the monster who did that pays in every sense of the word. Hope he suffers the same wounds. (Sorry if it sounds too blunt).

                                  Please keep us updated!! (((((((((((((((((Benny))))))))))))))))))))

I got a small update from Heather last night on Benny’s condition:

Little Benny is doing fairly well (all things considered) Taking lots of TLC and receiving lots of love and support – His wound (the 4 ” incision) is healing very well (as much as could be expected) and his other leg injuries and misc. puncture wounds are being flushed and properly cared for in accordance with Vet instructions. With loads of love and tenderness provided we hope for a full recvoery and that he will once agian be happy and healthy !  We are still terribly shocked by his condition and the circumstances surrounding his injuries and ask for healing energy and notes from well wishers. We will forward on to Benny!  And we will keep all at BinkyBunny posted on his recovery. We can accept nothing less!

                                                  Love to everyone,

I have always believed in seeing the good in people but things like this make me wonder why i bother, he is a very beatiful and lucky boy!

I have an update on Benny’s progress from Auntie Heather:

Benny is a strong and determined bunny. Three surgeries later, it appears that he is going to be perfectly well. What a fighter! He is still healing and has not only survived his stabbing attack, he has turned out to be a wonderful, loving boy who is adjusting well to his care and giving the sweetest kisses. Post surgery Benny is eating well and even playing. He has had quite enough of surgeries by now. His largest 4 inch surgical site is healing and his fur is growing in! The last leg injury we worried might need surgery will not! Yay Benny!!!!

Benny is very happy and making lots of eye contact with his caregivers now. No more dull expression of pain and hopelessness, this bunny is secure in the safety of his foster home and is gaining emotional strength too! He has started doing binkies, so something must be right. Both of his back legs are fully functional now and he is healing beautifully.

The family providing foster and medical care for Benny reports that he will be ready for adoption when he is fully healed and passes his final vet exam. It appears that a loving family awaits him in Florida! We are completing adoption materials and he needs to be neutered, then to have his final health clearance, and then he may be adopted! We did want to be sure he would make it through, and he has indeed, with flying colors! We need to have travel costs covered so he can fly first class in perfect safety. Any airline attendants out there who want a traveling companion? Contact Heather at 831 239-7119.

Benny sends his thanks and love!

Reading the email sent to me by this thread, I am amix with happiness and sadness. SO, SO HAPPY that Benny is doing so well and seems to be especially blessed in the areas of his surgeries, wounds and physical/mental/emotional recovery…and yet so sad that I did not scoop him up when I had the chance. Had I known that Auntie Heather would consider flying him out of state for adoption (I thought that with the trauma he’d already suffered, flying him somewhere would just be too much) I would’ve danced all the way down to California to ride up with him myself!

But that being said, I am just SO glad he’s doing so well! I haven’t stopped praying for him. I will continue to pray that he finds his forever home and that he never has another day of pain or sadness in his life. Bless you Benny and bless you Auntie Heather and Rabbit Haven! You are angels…all of you!

I work in mental health and one of the questions that we actually ask people (particularly young people) is if they have ever intentionally harmed an animal… and it makes me ILL some of the ways people respond to that. Obviously nothing to this effect cause in some way authorities would have to intervene (right?) but when I hear someone say “I kicked my dog” or “I slapped my cat” I want to kick and slap them. If you’re gonna be abusive to ANYONE… not that it’s ok to do that by any stretch of the imagination… but at least choose someone who can defend themselves… not a poor little animal or a kid… it’s just so sad and even though I work in mental health I still can’t even attempt to justify it by illness or whatever… I just feel bad for the victims of some people’s cruelty.

Poor little guy… he’s so fuzzy and cute. What a little trooper. Glad to hear someone is going to protect him now!

I wish I knew what happened to him, but he’s got a ton of sores all over his body. I feel so bad for the rescue buns that come in like this, but Nathan loves being snuggled and held – he’s not afraid, it’s really like he understands that I’m making him all better. Whoever did this to him though, deserves BAD things.

Volunteering in rescue myself, I know what you mean when you say they seem to know you are trying to help them. We get rabbits in that are sometimes so close to death, we don’t know if they’ll make it, but it’s like once they know they are in loving hands, it gives them the will to go on and they end up doing remarkably well.

I can’t wait to hear about Nathan’s happy ending next!
