Anyone used this before as a litter option?  I am wondering how close it is to Yesterday’s News…. though I’m a bit concerned about the dust factor.  Thanks!!

pine shavings are not a safe choice, but I know feline pine is more like sawdust pellets and is ok to use. Not sure about what’s in the Equine Pine.
Wouldn’t the pellets be HUGE since umm… horses pee in a much greater volume than bunbuns?

If this is the pelleted litter then it is fine. What happens with this when it gets wet it turns into “sawdust” – if your bun is a digger then it can be messy when it turns to the dust.

Personally I’ve never used this type of bedding, but according to the website it is 100% pine, which is not healthy for bunnies.

If you use wood pellets, like for wood stoves, those work wonderfully as well…

This is kilned just like the Feline Pine so all the oils and resins that are toxic to small animals are removed. The House Rabbit Society says these are perfectly acceptable litters from either softwoods (pine) or hardwoods.

Many of the wood stove pellets are also pine which are also fine but you do need to make sure they do not have an accelerant.

thanks for all the input folks! I’m confused though… what is the consensus? Are we thinking it is ok? I’ve had a hard time finding the wood stove pellets (FL) so that’s why I tried the Yesterday’s news, but even with 5 buns I’m changing pretty often (every other day w/ a “fluff/freshen” in between) and using quite a bit of it at $20/bag.

I use woodstove pellets all the time and I find the horse bedding is the exact same stuff. I don’t know about the “pine” factor though – I know pine is bad but if what Sarita says is true, then it should be fine.

It’s MUCH cheaper than Yesterdays News and absorbs moisture and odor just as well IMO.

I have used both horse stall pellets and wood stove pellets.  Both are safe and effective for use as a litter for your bunny.  The wood stove pellets are larger and more well formed and uniform in shape and size because they are made from the premium, low ash sawdust.  The horse stall product breaks apart more easily, and the pellets are smaller and often fractured.  The stove pellets are denser, so they absorb slightly better, but both will do the job.  I stopped using them because the pine sawdust did not break down very quickly in my compost, and the Aspen litter that I prefer does a better job at controlling odor.
