At work, we have an internal for sale section in outlook; we can advertise anything through out the Western Australian police dept.
I am not sure what to say, can anyone help me to write up an advertisement? I want them to know these are house rabbits all spayed/neutered and they are not a pet that likes to be picked up all the time, they are classed as an exotic pet and if they get sick would need to go to the vet just like a cat and dog would. I also want them to know they will have to fill in an adoption form etc.
They are all getting along good now, they do not like being picked up but when I do they don’t mind being stroked and kissed, not one of them bites or lashes out. When I go upto the cage they all come to the bars and like to sniff me, so I give them kissed through the bars.
I am so pleased with how well they have turned out, someone would be very happy with these little cuties.
These rabbits will be free to a very good home.
First I would advise to ask an adoption fee (that could be negotiable) People who spend money to get a pet treat it properly (usually) and people who get free pets (generally) don’t look after them, take them to the vets or keep them forever.
Also, I’m not sure what your laws are there, but here it’s known that researchers who need animals for experiments often get them from ‘free to good home ad’s’. So, I stongly suggest you ask an adoption fee…Maybe 25$ …If they can’t afford that, highly unlikely they can handle vet fees.
Anyways, how bout:
Hi my name is ____and I’m a ______type of rabbit. Me and my brothers and sisters are being offered for adoption as we need to find our very own forever homes! I’m already neutered/spayed so my new parent’s wouldn’t have to worry about that! And I’m also litter trained. I can’t wait to have my new very own home!! I’d like parent’s who understand that rabbit’s are exotic animals who require routine veterinary care just like cats and dogs do!! I love to play and run (or personal info that applies). I don’t always like being picked up, but I’d like when people play with me on the ground. If you are interested in meeting me or my brothers and sisters, please call…..
i would put ‘Rabbits for adoption, they are house rabbits and are not to be kept outside, all spayed neutered, call for more information’ if they are nice and simple like that then u wont get all silly people calling if anyone wants more information you can spend 10mins explaining when they call instead of trying to cram all the info into a small advert, usually they have a word limit and like K&K said i would charge a fee because if they cant afford the price of the rabbit they cant afford to look after one and you dont know with people nowadays!
Here are some examples in our local Craigslist and Petfinder.com ads from the House Rabbit Society and other rescues.

i like the second one which BB has shown, and gosh BB you must be up early!
Thanks for the help, I definatly want them to go to a good home so I will ask the $25.
BB I like the last add it sounds like my little rascals, full of energy and love chewing everything in site. I might mix and match a few of your ideas and put them all into one add.
This add will only go to the WA Police personal. I will also ring the rabbit society here for help, we apparently have a rabbit rescue that I phoned and left a message asking if they had any ideas, unfortunatly I had no call back.
I also want to do up a care package to give to the new owners, can anyone give me some links with good info that I can print off and put in the packages.
I will print off the helpful stuff on BB but anything else you can think of. I will try to find the emergency list that Scarlet posted; I think that would be helpful. I have brought four blue folders and one pink one. Crossing my fingers for loving homes for my precious babies.
Wish I could stop crying.
What do you think of this add? I copied and pasted from a few of your suggestions.
Pet baby rabbits. $25 each
Indoor home only with mostly cage-free time required.
Hi, my brothers, sister, and I are being offered for adoption, as we need to find our very own forever homes!
We are 5 months old and are already neutered/spayed so our new parent’s would not have to worry about that! We would like parent’s who understand that rabbit’s are exotic animals that require routine veterinary care just as cats and dogs do!
We do not always, like being picked up, but we like when people play with us on the ground. Whoever adopts us needs to know that since we are teenagers, we are more than likely to chew, dig, and be a bit messier than an adult bunny
We are good so far, but please do not expect us to be perfect. We are young bunnies with lots of energy.
Please meet us soon as we are super-cute, outgoing, happy, playful, and confident little bunnies.
Care packages will be given with each adopted baby.
I think that’s excellent! You really do a good job of explaining exactly what sort of bunnies someone’s going to get without either selling them short or making them look like easy pets. However, as an OCD English major, can I clean up some minor grammar mistakes so the sign will look more professional?
“Parents” should not have an apostrophe, as that makes the word possessive– you just want it plural. I.E., “parents” not “parent’s” both times you use the word. Same with the “rabbits” used in the same sentence. Also “We do not always, like being picked up” doesn’t need a comma. It should just be “We do not always like being picked up” Finally, in the last sentence, “brothers, sisters or I please e-mail” should be “brothers, sisters or me, please e-mail” as I becomes me when it’s the object in a sentence (think: “If you are interested in meeting I” vs. “If you are interested in meeting me.”) It doesn’t have to be changed the first time you use it because there it’s the subject (“I am being offered” vs. “Me am being offered”.)
Sorry about the long-windedness, I’m just a nut for punctuation. (I’m going to be that teacher everyone dreads someday…)
Also, do you think you might want to raise the adoption fee if you’re giving away care-packages? I know when you’re adopting a house rabbit around here the fee is like $70 to (a) make sure you’re serious and (b) offset the cost of the spay/neuter. I wouldn’t necessarily go that high, but maybe bring it up to $35 or $40 rather than $25? Just a thought.
Good luck finding your babies good homes!!!
yes it sounds a good add, i may also suggest an increase in price because $25 dollars is nothing to anyone really nowadays is it?
HJSoulma,
Don’t worry, you’re not the only one with an urge to edit! Thanks for spotting more than I did.
It’s a very good ad, but I do have one basic question – Are they being adopted separately, together (ie. all three) or with an option for a pair? I am a bit confused. If it’s separately, than you could say $25 each. Maybe add $45 for two and $60 for all three. Of course you want someone who really wants three bunnies, not just a bargain.
I think your care package is a wonderful idea. I would add the link to House Rabbit Society (http://www.rabbit.org), and perhaps directions to the webpage that lists recommended Veterinarians by location. Once you know where they’re going, you could even print out a suggested list. (OK, HJS, now I’m totally self- conscious about my own writing here!!! I am very familiar with Brandeis. YOur posts make me homesick.)
Scooter here. I think the ad reads well, with the minor fixes suggested by HJSoulma. Good luck, we hope they find forever homes soon!
HJSoulma: I *am* that teacher that everyone dreads. Don’t feel bad, I’m a real stickler for grammar and syntax too because I’m writing and editing scientific documents all the time. Requires very precise use of language…changing more than a comma can change the meaning of what you want to say. Assuming anyone, including me, can actually understand it in the first place.
**sits on hands to keep from deleting extra space in last sentence of reply and making the “O” lc** 2 of you – Egad!
i am planning to be a teacher, but i hate grammer its never made sense to me, give me long equations and anything mathematical but english sucks lol
what you could do is ask for an adoption fee, but then make up a care package that costs that same amount, so really everyone is breaking even. if you asked for 50 bucks, you could get a good house rabbit book, some bunny toys, and maybe a bag of the food they are on.
I have 6 babies up for adoption. It would be nice if they go in pairs or how many they want. If I ask more I don’t think they will be adopted, you can pick up a rabbit at the pet shop for $40. Sorry for the grammer and punctuation, I cut and pasted a bit and I was not the best at school, I had older parents that thought that my brother should have the best education and I was a girl so I would marry some day and a man would support me.
but if you ask too little they might go to homes that are not suitable. it’s your call, but i think if you ask too little you’re asking for trouble.
I would like to strongly urge you to offer a decent price for these buns, $85 is not too much to ask I think. That is what I paid for my buns, each!
There are people out there looking for a next meal for their pet snakes and $25 is a decent price for meal, don’t you think?!
Just a caution!
i know this is not an easy thing to do… you need to strongly weigh if you want them to get new homes quickly or if you want them to get quality homes slowly. i’d advertise them in as many different places as possible with pictures if possible so people understand that they are not itty bitty babies. even if you ask 50 per bunny and then when they pick them up just hand the money right back… at least you’ll know they were willing to pay the amount.
The House Rabbit Society has an article about finding homes for rabbits:
http://www.rabbit.org/adoption/finding-a-new-home.html
Given that $40 is the going cost of a rabbit from a pet store in your area, that’s your limit. I don’t think you can go over or even equal that, if you want any chance of having someone take them. Even with a bonus gift package to go with them, because otherwise people will say “what’s the point, I’ll just go to the pet store”.
And I think that something like $20-$30 will deter people who just want live snake food. For that price, one can buy more dead mice or rats or such for that purpose, or even live ones which shouldn’t be given to snakes for the most part anyway–too much potential for damage to the snake, which are pretty expensive themselves, as a responsible snake-owner can attest!
One thing to consider is pointing out the cost of spaying/neutering the bunnies, which is not insignificant. We realized that yesterday in deciding between Kylie and Keelie, who are already spayed (effectively a $500 value, which would be what we’d pay at our vet for both), and a baby bunny for whom we’d have to pay ourselves. However, I don’t think it’s a good idea to go above $40 even with this, for the reasons given above.
Also, how much time do you have to place the bunnies? The more time you have, the more flexible you can be.
Maybe if you plan on raising the price you should stress the importance of a spayed/neutered rabbit and put in parentheses something like “spayed/neutered (a $70 value!)” or whatever it cost you to get them fixed. That might attract more serious owners. Could you also do an over-the-phone interview like the House Rabbit Network does? And also, don’t worry about the corrections– grammar’s a beeotch, and I’m a nutty bookworm! I’ve corrected plenty of fellow college students’ papers with the same sort of mistakes. (Also, RabbitPam, did you go to Brandeis? Yay alums!)
HJSoulma,
No I didn’t but I have a cousin who did. (I interviewed there years ago for a job running the art gallery but didn’t get it. )
I think the story in the family is that my grandmother’s cousin was one of the founders.
Lisa, I don’t blame you for crying, it must be very traumtizing for you. I think take your time, go through a bit of an interview to make certain the adopter knows how much work they are going to be and if for any reason they feel like they are over their head and cannont continue to care for the rabbit for ANY reason, to call you immediately so you can have them back.
As for the emergency list, are you speaking about the emergency kit? Here are the discussions not just about that but about evacuation in the event of a disaster (FYI – They are in the FAQ section):
Emergency Kits: (both for rabbit health emergency and for Disaster preparation for our rabbits)

Rabbitpam,
Aww, silly Rose Art museum, they should have given you the job. Then we could have been close-by-bunny-friends! But alas. Cool that you might be related to one of the founders, though.
((((((lisa)))))) gees this must be hard. have you posted the ad yet? i missed the boat on advice for the ad but i see you have had great feedback. just remember you can take as long as you want when deciding if a potential adopter is the right fit for your buns. i know you will find really great people for your buns so they’ll be happily spoiled.
ps… my grammar & punctuation is terrible. i think i was sick the week we took it in school so i really just punctuate & write the way i speak. oi.
if u get the advert up and running post us the link!
If I put it on the internal police computer that only goes to everyone that works in the dept, not sure now my hubby says you never get responses from it.
I thought I might ring up the rabbit society and see if they have a monthly magazine, if so I might put the advert in there. I asked the rabbit savvy vet if I could put one up there, they said no.
She isn’t the nicest vet I know she is also a breeder who sells her rabbits at 6 weeks old, she is in it for the money not the welfare of rabbits.
I was thinking of maybe putting a few flyers up at other vets.
We don’t have any web sites that I can think of to advertise them there.
I will keep you all informed of what I will do.
HJS,
That would have been nice. All the close-by-bunny friends seem to live in Perth, Australia!
