        Hi All

Just wondering if anyone here also is a blood donor … I have to for medical reasons … I have been donating for about 18 months and still cannot come to terms with it.  I donate every 3 months (was every 2 months initially).  The limit we can donate here in one session is 470mls, but because I am such a wimp I only donate 250mls which is about a cup.

Anyone else cop out during their blood donating?

I used to donate every few years, and then the last time I donated I passed out. I have no idea why. A friend and I had gone and she’d already finished and was standing around talking to me, I remember saying something like “I’m feeling a little strange” and then the next thing I knew I was flat on my back and had 3 or 4 techs standing over me. That was a few years ago, and I haven’t gotten up the nerve to donate again since. I really should.

I’m not allowed to donate blood because I lived in London and ate meat (when Mad Cow’s was around).

The last time I was waiting for jury duty, they were having a blood drive. They were not promising if you donate you get out of jury duty, but it would help kill the time so I tried. I answered a million questions about my habits but when they tested for iron levels, I was below the acceptable level so they would not allow me to donate. I missed the last round of jury selection in the meantime and got dismissed so it was not a total loss.

Now I am on blood thinners for a clotting disorder and they won’t even consider me. Which is a shame, I don’t have the rarest blood type but it is not common. So I do feel bad about it.

K&D, being over weight is not a factor. Under weight may be another thing. What they look at your exposure to certain diseases, anemia and other blood issues. Most people don’t get around to giving so that is why here in NY, the blood drives come to you. Corporations allow them to hold them in their buildings and they give you time off to donate or as in my case, they go for the captive audience…jury duty.

i think giving people time off to give blood would be a good idea, i think if you work 9-5 and u have to give up your saturday or lunch hour to go people wont bother, but if you could have an hour off to pop to town i would go, i will look into if they come out to you over here, thanks Bunzai

Your welcome K & D. I hate when there are shortages and I can’t help. Ironically, one of NY’s major collection and storage facilities for blood is just few blocks from my home. LOL non stop guilt.

Scooter here.  Under weight can definitely be a factor.  In college they had blood drives all the time, but I couldn’t participate because I was under the minimum weight.  Which, well, I’m not anymore.  And I really should give too.
