just a quick question.  i got the tim hay cubes from the store (and they smell exquisite!) but how should i store them?  they’re in a plastic bag, should i keep them in there and close it, or leave it open.  i’m guessing a plastic container is out?

i’ve never bought hay cubes but they should be okay in the plastic bag they came in with the opening just folded over shouldn’t they?   as long as it’s not tightly closed then minimal amounts of air can seep in to keep it dryed out as well as when you open it back up to get another cube out.

Well I have my tim pellets in the original ziploc bag and then put that bag in a plastic container so no air could get in.  Is that bad?  Are we supposed to have some air?  I thought air spoiled things????Thought it was just the hay that needed to breathe…

i guess if it’s perfectly dry then it doesn’t need to have any air.  i was just thinking to avoid mold.  i read a post about storing hay that said you could keep it in a plastic container with a lid because opening it & getting hay out circulated enough air for that purpose.

Yeah that’s hay though not cubes. I’ve heard that it’s not really good to store hay in plastic because it needs to breathe. It’s better in a cardboard box or if you do store it in a plastic garbage bag you need to leave the top open. Now I wonder about tim pellets. Hopefully someone here that knows for sure will respond!

pellets i put in an airtight container. these hay cubes i guess i’ll leave in the plastic bag lightly closed, unless anyone can tell me otherwise.

would putting them in a plastic bag and in a plastic box not be the same for the no breathing thing?

I supplement Cadbury’s regular timothy hay with the timothy hay cubes (she loves them!) and I just keep them in the original plastic bag they came in. I usually leave the top of the bag open, sometimes I lightly fold it down. I’ve been using the hay cubes for many months now and haven’t had any problems.

OK so why do you want hay cubes? Just to add variety? Are they JUST compressed hay? I have no opinion, just asking because maybe I need to buy some!

I bought two of those huge plastic storage crates (like giant Tupperware) for my hay, pellets and cubes. I just put the Binky brown paper bags full of them inside the plastic containers so they don’t make as much mess and are safe from prying noses (my cats love the hay too). The plastic is not airtight though. Is that bad?

this is the first time i got the oxbow tim hay cubes (BB sells them here). it was only 4.50 i think for a one pound bag. i like them b/c Meadow thinks it’s a treat since we give it to her by hand and she’s never been the best at eating her hay. she’s been eating more hay since we’ve switched her to a different kind, but i like the variety. also, my husband loves to feed Meadow treats. he gives her way too many, so i am hoping to *train him* to give her those more than raisins or papaya tablets.

                                  Oh dear! Too many raisins = unhappy bunny butt! 0.o;
It’s funny, my hubby was the first to find Mimzy, and they had quite a rapport, until he met me. Now he doesn’t even give the hubby the time of day! ^_^ (It really is kind of sad, though.)
I have to wean my two off their treats. I am so worried it will mess up their tummies!
Pip is the big hay mower in this house. I would do just about anything to get Mimzy to eat more.

try the hay cubes Mimz. he might like them. i keep telling him to not feed so many treats, but he does it when i’m not around. i’ve actually stopped giving treats b/c i know he gives so many.

The caution with storing hay and compressed hay as in cubes is that it can develop mold. I would store them much like regular hay and not in an airtight container. Most hay cubes (only provide as a treat or entertainment) come in a plastic bag that already has holes in it.

Timothy pellets…hmm, I am going to have to think about that. I keep a small amount in a canister for feeding and the rest in the bag (zip-locked shut) on a shelf in a closet where it is dry and out of the light. I am going to have to take a look at the bag. The thing with pellets though is that they are really compressed and don’t have all the open nooks and crannies that hay cubes and hay does. I have heard of storing the pellets in the freezer and I think that would help keep the bugs out. Moths and other critters like to get in them and I know they definately need to be sealed up to maintain freshness. I’m going to have to do a bit of looking around and research some more. My curiosity is piqued.

my buns only eat their hay if i put small amounts right infront of them throughout the day, if i put one big handful once or twice a day they dont eat much if any

I am keeping the pellets in their original bag and then put that bag in a sealed container in the cabinet. I just ran out of the bag I bought 6 months ago and the pellets were perfect. So I am assuming that’s the right way to store them unless you find out differently.

This was a 10 lb bag of pellets – the only size I could find at the time. At 1/8-1/4 cup a day, that lasted me 6 months for one rabbit.

i’ve enver had a problem with pellets in an airtight container. i did have pellets get bugs once when i had my first bun, but i think i bought too many at once and i kept them around too long. i buy smaller amounts now so i replenish it mroe frequently.

O.K. there is an expiration date on the Oxbow pellets that I buy but as for storage recommendations…there are none on the package. That is kind of disconcerting.

I have heard that any pellets you’re not going to use in two months need to be frozen. The rest should be kept in an airtight container to maintain freshness. But I have no idea where I heard/read that. :-/
My two are now sawing through a bag of timothy pellets (approx. 5 lbs.?) and I’m measuring it out and everything. I really have no idea why all of a sudden they seem to be eating it so quickly!
I also have to measure out small amounts of hay every few hours, especially overnight. Otherwise I hear plastic being munched. ;P
