As many of you know my baby, Boston has been sick for a little over a week now with bad head tilt. She can’t hold her head straight and it is always twisted. I know I’m supposed to hold her as little as possible, but she loves to snuggle me cuz her I give her neck rubs while she gives me tooth purrs and arm licks.

Tonight the boyfriend and I were fighting and I was holding Boston on my lap, her head was nuzzled into my arm. My BF came in to hug me while we were sitting on the couch and Boston’s claws came out and she literally pushed him away! I put her hand down and she put it right back up and pushed again.

Haha, I think she knows that I take care of her the most (my BF works ALOT, but when he is home he spends as much time w/ her as possible) and I also think she realizes that I’m the one buying her meds and helping her to get better the most. (Like I said, not b/c of neglect, my BF just doesn’t have time). So when we were fighting, it was like she took my side. Very cute Plus I can rub it in that she likes me more!!! hehe

I think that if she loves being held and she is getting those neck massages then that should be just fine. I think the holding as little as possible is because most bunnies do not like being held and it stresses them out even more and the rabbit needs to calmly get adjusted to the new view on the ground. But those neck rubs you are giving her may really relieve such muscle strain, and she may feel safe with you. Sounds like it. Each bunny is unique and finding what heals one bunny may be different than another. Sounds like your boyfriend now has two females to deal with! He better watch out.

My first bun Fu, loved being held when she had head tilt. I think having something warm and soft to rest her poor head against helps.

To funny she got your boyfriend. My Shadow likes different things from each of us, but he comes when I call his name…SO I WIN! LOL.

i think it’s so important that you can hold her during this time. it’s comforting for her, and it’s comforting to you being close and having that interaction. this is almost like a full-blown bonding experience, but it’s unfortunate the circumstances. as far as the swiping your BF… i’m actually pleased she’s showing some life in that way. maybe when he’s home, he can take over the massages for a little bit to give your arm a rest. the more you choose to make him an integral part of this, the more he will feel invested in her care and the recovery process.

Yes, the “don’t pick up” rule for head tilt bunns mostly refers to the dizziness that they might be feeling, so extra motion is not recommended. But as you know, I broke that rule to give my guy neck rubs, too! As horrible as the situation was, Fluffy and I bonded tightly during this time – he totally felt my devotion to him during that time and it helped keep him relaxed, hopeful and stress-free. You are doing the same for Boston.

Aren’t bunnies funny sometimes? I remember my husband and I had an arguement once and Fluffy came out from under the table, stood between us and thumped! We stopped to look down at him. He looked at me, then at my husband, thumped again, and we started laughing! It was the best ending we ever had to an argement!

We are seeing a little improvement knowltons. She seems to be eating hay by the tons, but that varies from day to day. She drank a little water today, but I starting administering pedialyte today just to make sure she stays hydrated.

Instead of lying twisted, she can now semi-sit up and leans against her cage for support. Her eye on the ‘down’ side is still in very bad shape and I imagine it will be until the rolling stops.

She hasn’t been eating pellets, but we have been administering baby food, I’m scared she’s losing weight though. Today I felt her ribs and that freaked me out, b/c I don’t remember ever feeling her ribs before.

I miss the running and jumping and binkying, although I did a couple kisses on the nose today

glad to hear you are giving her lots of love during such a rough time, i’m sure it’s been of great comfort to her. it’s good that she’s eating hay – but it’s also a good idea to keep up with the pedilyte and assist-feedings – sending looooots of get well wishes her way

also, I wanted to chime in that though feeling ribs may be scary, it really depends. Check out what a “fit rabbit” actually means:

I copied and pasted this from my site FAQ section”

Q12. How can I tell if my bunny is fit?
Answer: I cannot say it better than an excerpt I found in an diet article on http://www.rabbitnetwork.org.

“How do you know if your bunny is fat? Many house rabbits are, and they are not at all embarrassed by it! Rabbits store fat inside their abdomen, which makes just eyeballing them for love handles ineffective. Run your hands along your rabbit’s side, feeling the rib cage. When you reach the end of the ribs, your should be able to feel a slight inward slope, the waist. Fat bunnies will balloon out instead. Remember that the ribs are palpable in even quite obese rabbits, so don’t let your bunny fool you into more snacks!”

                              SOURCE: http://www.rabbitnetwork.org/articles/obese.shtml

On another note: I understand what you mean when you feel the loss of binkies. Bailey could no longer binky like other bunnies, and I personally mourned that, but she would do other movements that would let me know she was happy. Like she would do a goofy body or head move tor shake that was an attempt at a binky. Important to note: She didn’t realize it was just an attempt. I could tell she felt it was a full binky and really that is all that mattered. So if your bunny is fighting for life and ends up enjoying life even if disabled, you will see happiness even in that state, I promise.

Slow and steady wins the race where head tilt is concerned. Head tilt can appear quite quickly but can often take weeks or months to overcome, so the little improvement you see is a really great sign! Perhaps the tilt has plateaued and Boston is now getting used to seeing things a new way. Slowly but surely she will adjust and make ammends for her new situation. And as time goes by, the tilt will subside.

Glad to hear there is at least a little improvement – it’s a big step! Kisses to Boston!

BinkyBunny–Boston does the head shake thing…I recognized it as the shake she used to do right before a binky-it makes me happy too!

Your guys’ words of encouragement keep us going…all these meds and forcefeedings get exhausting, but at least my school semester will be over tomorrow night!

We haven’t been back to the vet. We will be going next week when we run out of Baytril to decide if we will be getting more Baytril or staying on just the de-wormer.

Boston has been making attempts at cleaning herself lately and she wants soooo badly to come out and play. Yesterday she was rattling the cage with her teeth and when I opened it up to give her hay she was squirming her way out.

If you haven’t done so yet, you may want to get some critical care to feed your bun.  This will help to make sure she is getting all the nutrients she needs.  Ask you vet about it if you are concerned about the possible weight loss.
