Hello!! Ok, I am not sure whether what I did is wrong. So far, Baileys and Lemon have been in separate bedrooms. Baileys has (supervised) free run of the bedroom & kitchen when the dogs are outside. Today I brought Lemon down in her cage and put it down for Baileys to see. Baileys started chinning her cage and did mostly that all the time she was there (10 min. most). Then, they sniffed each other’s noses through the bars, and I thing he tried to lick her!! Is all this behaviour good or bad? The chinning is dominance and possession, butn in this context? What about the licking? Lemon looked a little tense, but not too much. She followed his movements and approached the bars and accepted being sniffed and licked. Of course I will keep them separate for some months, but is it good for them to start meeting through the cages?

        Thanks!!

Licking is good!  Bonded bunnies lick each other as a sign of affection.  This sounds like a good start!

i think that as long as neither is getting agitated being near the other, you could keep their cages near or in the same room, but make sure to leave about 3-4 inches between just in case. a bun can bite another thru the bars, and it’s even possible for a female to get pregnant thru the bars.

yes sniffing & licking is a great sign!  i also think it’d be good to keep them within sight & smell to get them accustomed to each other.  and i’ll second beka’s caution to be sure to leave space between their enclosures and also to be cautious when one is out & the other is in it’s enclosure that they do not nip thru the cage wires.  best to prevent the opportunity for this.

i think i’ve heard that that can actually help the process if they share the same run space. they will get used to the scents and it will become a shared space. i would take extra precautions in making sure the cages are completely secure, even if you need to put an additional clip on the openings. more than once a bun has escaped during another’s run time and a fight (or pregnancy) has occurred.

I am glad I seem to be doing things right. I know all about dogs and cats, but bunnies are a completely different thing! I really hope it works out! Thank you!!

Thank you! Yes, I really think it was love at first sight. They really look happy together. Anyway, I am always supervising, since they have not been spayed yet. However, the vet told me Lemon is way to young to get pregnant and Baileys has not mature yet. So, I do not leave them alone, but he has not shown any signs of ‘sexual interest’ at all. Hope I can neuter him soon, anyway. I knew licking was a good sign, but I did not know about  chinning being a good sign. Why is that so? Just curious.

I have psoted some pics of them together in another post, the one inc which I am ‘calling all experts’. Check them out!

I’d also suggest putting a towel in each cage and swapping it daily.  That way they can really get used to each other’s scents.  I think that was very helpful w/ my bond.

Thank you Skunklionshow! I did that bonding my two cats and it really worked. Fortunately, I think I won’t be needing it with Lemon and Baileys. Now I am definitely convinced that this was love at first sight! They follow each other all the time, run and binky like mad when they are together and groom each other every chance they get! I think it took them 2 seconds to realize they weere made for each other! I am very happy for that! Thank you for all your help guys!!
