So I live in the middle of the St John River, half of the city is on one side of the river and half the city on the other.
We got 12 feet of snow total this winter, and with more meltage in Maine, everything has gone into the river and we are having flood levels like the “great flood of ’73” where water rose 8.6 metres above sea level (like, 26 feet). Last I heard levels were 8.3 metres above sea level.
I decided to totter around downtown on my bike (with its poor flat front tire) and take some pictures!
So…enjoy!

The river + its overflow onto the walking trails/almost road.

Walking trails that no longer exist…

More “walking trails” and a poor statue…

Walking trails/the art gallery sign.

A news guy + look how close to the walking bridge it is!

A poor shed…

Roads downtown

More roads near the river *river is to the left*

This is a road…

Caption I put says all, lol.

Downtown core

These houses across the river are so flooded…![]()

downtown

Pretty cool, eh???
Great pictures! That’s quite some flood!
Looks Like good times!
We live just uphill of the Chena River in Alaska, I often worry about floods, but unfortunately it’s more often we have large forest fires. It’s times like that you WISH the river would flood!
I’d heard about the melt-off on the radio this morning but had no idea you were that close! How far is your house from there? Do you have plenty of couch cushions to strap all the bunnies and piggies and such to in case it reaches you? 0.o;
Of course, I’m sure you know how to avoid getting washed away in any of these flooded areas, right? It’s very easy to get swept off thinking that the ‘puddle’ before you isn’t so deep!
Be careful dear!
Lovely piccies, btw! ![]()
Thanks
I’m a couple streets up from where the water is, but my apartment building is on high ground.
There’s another area of NB called Maugerville and Jemseg that are absolutely under water…they had evacuate houses and cows and horses and stuff …poor people!
I’m more impressed now that I went to see it! I was like, “Pff, water…come on.” but it’s impressive!!
wow thas some flood. your pics came out really good. good job on that. that poor statue the statue man on top looks like he is trying to figure out how to get off and to land lol. awe shame when people loose their homes to water messing it up
We’re worried about the same thing here too. Although it is more related to dams not being able to hold back the water if too much snow melts at once. I shudder at the thought.
Great pics. So enjoyed looking at them … even though there is flooding the place looks lovely … I so love Canada.
We don’t get floods in Perth … we get so little rain here but we do experience bushfires every year … up north they have floods mainly due the cyclonic weather … the east coast of Australia experiences flooding as well as bushfires which can cause astronomical damage as well as loss of lives … the fires are mainly lit by people … can you believe it …
wow, thats crazy stuff. Floods would scare me, especially since I can’t swim.
Nice pictures!
wow lion lop i was thinking about you yesterday while i was watching the national news coverage of the floods. gees that would be really freaky. i can swim but for some reason deep water / what’s lying underneath the surface scares the buhjeebers outta me. mother nature sure has some tricks up her sleeve. glad you’re on high ground!
that’s unreal! i hope everyone has been safe.
Wow great pics!! Sending them around the office now!!
Wowza!
hey isn’t litle puffy tail in NB too? hope her & her family & furry friends are all safe!
Floppy – you live by the Ocean, and you can’t swim. How does that not freak you out?
nice pictures, but i hope you have managed to avoid the floods!
Wow thanks for sharing
Growing up in Colorado I remember hearing about “flash Floods” in the mountains, water can be so lovely and so dangerous!
we never have floods here and then all of sudden they came last year out of the blue
LPT’s about 2 hours from me, on high ground so I think she’s safe
But yeah, water is pretty amazing!!
My folks and I made regular runs to places like Las Vegas and Reno when I was a wee ‘un. (My mum was a raging gambler, but she won us a couple new cars, so that was cool.) We got caught in a flash flood in the Nevada desert just outside Vegas and there was water up to the tops of the wheel wells on the car. The whole time my mum was freaking out, screaming that we were gonna die and my dad kept telling her to settle down and not open the car door. I swear she would’ve bolted if she’d had the chance.
It passed within a half hour and the water just goes WHOOSH! away from the car and into the sands. We were able to drive home without further incident. It was bizarre! 0.o;
My dad and I also traveled to Michigan in 1976 and there were terrible rainstorms there that summer. The lightning was so constant at night that I couldn’t sleep, it was like being in a stadium with all the halogens on and pointing in my eyes!
Dawn I had a friend who lived near Perth who spoke of the terrible fires there. Yes, it’s staggering how many are lit by people, usually ones who are too stupid to manage a light bulb, much less a box of matches. One of our largest fires here was started by someone who lit a burn barrel (for leaves and yard clippings we get to burn them here) during the hot months and it fell over and rolled away from him. Instead of trying to put it out, what does he do? Runs away and hope she doesn’t get caught…which, of course, he did. He was supposed to pay some titanic amount of money to the state and all the people whom he sent homeless with that burn, but obviously he was one of those who doesn’t have that kind of money, so it was a slap on the wrist thing.
Hacks me off, seriously. That year the smoke was so bad you couldn’t venture outside, it was so thick I couldn’t even see the front yard from my window. >.<
^^wow!!
Oh, poor you, LionLop. I forgot you live in Freddy. I haven’t logged in for a little while but I’ve been seeing pics of the flood all week in the paper! Glad you didn’t have to evacuate!! Hope everyone got their bunnies to dry ground!!!
I’m glad I dont live too near any rivers!!! They are saying the damages from that flood are way up in the millions!
