So, long story short, we bought new windows today from a guy who came out doing a promotion. We had Hoopie out during the visit. He was just mesmerized by Hoopie! He would be talking and just stop and watch Hoopie for several seconds. He couldn’t believe we had a rabbit IN the house. lol Hoopie did at one point bravely go over to check out this mans bag and window. lol Quite cute. Normally he shys away from strangers.
Even when we bought a new fridge the delivery guys were quite impressed we had 4 buns in the house w/out any horrible smells.
It seems like every single time someone finds out about our buns they are just so fascinated like we are keeping a Cow or Horse in the house. lol
But it does make a great way to educate people on rabbits as house pets. Even MY husband piped in to make sure this guy understood they werent good pets for kids (the guy had mentioned his kids would love to hear about our house rabbit).
LOL, I can believe that. People are for the most part shocked at seeing a rabbit, running among the dogs and cats. And we never fail to use the opportunity for education. Especially when they mention kids!
Mine say how can you have a rabbit in the house, they should be outside in a hutch.
Yep – it’s definately novel to have a bunny roaming the house!
I had a babysitter one night who got a big fright when she saw Fred zoom out from behind the couch. She thought it was a rat! A big one!
My sister-in-law has two buns which she keeps outside in a small hutch and she can’t understand why i have Fred inside. i told her to just try bringing them in for a while…I know she’ll get hooked! Hee hee (she says with the certain conviction that the charm of a bunny could win over anyone…)
My favorite have always been my apartment landlords and the maintenance guys. They loved my bunny! Always stood around to ask questions and timidly asked if they could pet him. I’d hold him so they’d get the full mini rex fur treatment. Same comment every time – Just like velvet.
When Spockie died the girls at the apartment office gave me a condolence card!
People are always shocked when i tell them rabbits can be litter box trained. They always say the same thing…”wow, you have bunnies in the house? Don’t they stink?” and I’m always like…”do you smell anything?” “Well…no.” Most just think they are gross farm animals i guess but, they are just like a cat or dog to me.
we actually rent our house from my grandparents and we’re fortunate that they’re both huge animal lovers. they are not at all phased by our bun, they even LIKE her gigantic enclosure. my parents on the other hand, while they love animals, they love “real pets” (cats and dogs). so they can’t figure out why Meadow has run of the house, why she has a huge enclosure, why she gets fresh veggies everyday, why she has vet visits regularly. it’s all unnecesary in their opinion. i mentioned to them last weekend that we might be adopting a second bun in the future… and their response was “why?” my best friends were used to Stephen so having Meadow around the house is natural to them. i’m not sure they’d get house buns…. but they at least recognize the possibility.
Ya gotta love it when the big tough guys want to pet the bunny!
A year ago, I would have been pretty shocked to seeing a rabbit, running among dogs and cats.
Living by example is the best way to educate others!
LOL Sometimes people do react like you have a horse or a cow in your house!!! heheeh
I had some people over from work, a while back when I only had Kokanee. I took her out for cuddles and everyone thought she was cute but then oooh were they freaked when I put her down to run around on her own!! I’ve had some people freak-“Oh my god there’s a poop!!” I just tell them they are lucky there is only one!! LOL
My girlfriend just got her first bunny (her bf got it for her for her birthday) and we were at her house for a gathering. Two of the guys there were hunters and were ASTOUNDED that she had a rabbit in her house. They thought it was adorable, and incredible-couldn’t stop cuddling him. He has this box that’s his (super cute) it’s a shoebox with two stuffed animals and he jumped in there to hang out with his toys-boy did they think that was awesome!! …and said they might stop hunting rabbits. Now thats good stuff!!!
Also, by sharing about my rabbits (which I constantly do-totally a proud mama) not only did my best friend get a rabbit, but a gal who works at the zoo just adopted from the humane society too!!
That’s so funny – happens to us, too! People are just so amazed at how they interact with visitors, how they run around, how they are *gasp* littertrained (“No way! I had no idea!”).
A friend of mine who also has bunnies said one time she knew this lady was coming over to her house – this lady knew she had rabbits and was always so amazed at how wonderful they were and marvelled at their intelligence. So before she arrived, she went to the basement where the bunnes were, took some poops and arranged them into the outline of a big heart right at the bottom of the steps. So when the lady came over and they went into the basement, she got to the bottom of the steps and feigned surprise, “Oh Snowy! You sweet little girl! Mamma loves you, too!”
The lady guest was dumbfounded and blinked in disbelief!
HA! THATS HILARIOUS rabbitsmba!
i talk so much about my buns to friends & family that they know the drill (litter box trained & all) but still are mesmerized when they come over. i haven’t had much company since pinky has taken over the place… it’ll be funny to have visitors when she’s out & about because she goes EVERYwhere. lol. she really quite entertaining. baby just sticks to her routine of following the dog everywhere & ignores all else when people are around.
one time years ago when i had my first bun – binky boy – i was looking for a roommate & had an ad in the paper. a prospective roomy was here (a dirty older man type who’s app i was gonna tear up as soon as he left) and binky ran circles around his cowboy boots at the front door. lol. i guess he was happy at the thought of having another male in the house? watching the bun was the only thing that took his eyes away from my chesticles.
When I told people I got a bunny, they were like “Why?” Why not a cat or a dog. I then have to tell them that my husband does not like pets, but he loves animals. He has had bad experiences with dogs, cats, horses, and even ducks. I on the other hand was going on pet withdrawl. One day I cam home from a friend’s house who had a guinuea pig and out of the blue asked if I could have a rabbit. We were going through a pretty stressful time, and he knew I needed something. I used to raise rabbits (outdoors) and thought it would be the easiest. (I was so dumb) Any how, We have had Holly since October and he’s come around. I even called her a bad bunny once for doing something wrong, and he said she’s not bad. I was like Yeah Hubby. We both win. Everynight he gets on the floor with her and pets her. She will sit for 15 min or more and let him pet her. For me, forget it. She’ll let me pet her and then she’ll go explore.
Most people who come over love the bunnies. Every now and then someone comes into the house though and makes stupid comments. When we had a fridge delivered last year one of the delivery guys saw the buns and said “oh look, dinner”. If it wasn’t for the fact that he had my fridge in his hands I would have thrown him out!

BBMum… ew. creepy guy. that is kinda funny. but still… how creepy.
S&A… i get absolutely POed when people make jokes like that. i know it’s a joke, but i never say, “mmm… chihuahua stew” or “black tabby kabobs…” if i see them with their pets! it’s so offensive insinuating that someone’s pet can be dinner. that makes me so mad. (and unfortunately my dad and some of Mike’s friends do that all the time.)
Scooter and Annette,
I actually know how you feel. Our youngest stepdaughter brought her boyfriend to Christmas. He had seen Holly many times before, but I guess he had a little bit to drink before he came to our house. He also had a buddy with him. Hey come see a trick that Ozzy Osbourne used to do with animals. I politely took the pet carrier and Holly into my room. I was scared he really would hurt her.
After Christmas, my stepdaughter took off with this guy and ended up in NM. She is now tired of some of his crap and is trying to come home. There have been times our lives here have been as crazy as a soap opera.
Yeah… I haven’t had any people coming into the house and think its strange but
when my boyfriend brought lola home, I remember his mom being surprised that
bunnies can be litterbox trained. I think there are many people out there who
are still unaware that bunnies make great indoor pets and they they thrive better
inside with people rather than outside in hutches! My floppy reminds me of a lil
pup that doesnt bark. lol he is such a character!
Beka, “Black tabby kabobs”?! Now that’s funny!
My brother adored Spockie, but it must be a guy thing, because he’d always pet him and say something like “be a good boy or it’s rabbit stew tonight.”
Meanwhile, I would ask him to hold the bunny while I trimmed his nails, and do you know that my brother wouldn’t do it more than once because he was afraid Spockie would associate him with something unpleasant and he didn’t want my bunny to be afraid of him or not like him when they visited each other. What a softie.
The litter box thing is pretty surprising to some people, but the things I hear the most is how amazed people are at the size of our bunnies’ condo, and how people are surprised by how interactive our bunnies are. People are used to hutch bunnies who are timid and afraid of people, they are not used to DJ standing on his hind legs and giving his best “Hey, got a treat?” expression.
Yup, and people seem to think that rabbits are mean and bite (I’m bringing Kahlua to work on Monday everyone wants to meet her)…I tell them if their sister (or whoever) had a timid rabbit that bit, it was probably because it wasn’t given enough attention and things to do. Might be blunt but in most cases true (IMO).
yes i always get strange looks and when i say they are litter trained i usually get the ‘what? how? really?’ they also presume they just sit there really.. i think its quite sad
My landlord came over to check in on things as he heard that I had a couple of buns and that they were ‘messing up’ the place. He is from Ireland and when he saw my two buns, I could tell that he saw them as livestock instead of pets – but he was okey with the setup and the lack of mess/smell.
Oh, I should also note that my buns also could tell he was looking at them as if they were meat instead of pets because my usually curious crew immediately ran into their little house.
my husband’s sister, husband and kids came over yesterday for dinner. the kids had seen Meadow, but my sister and brother-in-law had not. they were impressed that she was littertrained. they didn’t seem to care too much tho.
im sure its one of those things they will talk about in the car on the way home beka hehe :p
Have any of you gotten the “they’re wild animals and should be freeeee!” line? I mentioned that my apartment manager lady had made me get rid of Heathcliff (he’s staying at my fiance’s house again now) and my parents seemed convinced that, because Heath was a rabbit and rabbits are clearly wild animals, I should just set him free.
Oh please, wild animals my foot. Just show them a picture of a lion head or a jersey wooly and ask them on which planet they think those exist as wild animals.
I get the O.o look when I say I have 6 … and then when people come (the few people who have been here) they are just in shock at everything…6 rabbits and 3 guinea pigs. And then I get embarrassed…lol…
My dad was shocked to learn they were litte trained yesterday!
Well, to be honest, people were already shocked to learn I had 5 dogs and two cats. Now two buns!!! They just know it is just like me. They do look at me in disbelief when I tell them they are litter trained.and they simply stare in awe when they come in and find my house does not stink at all. In spite of such a huge furry crowd!
yes i think part of the reason we dont get SO many weird looks is because its who we are, everyone who knows me knows i adore animals and regularly do things to prevent animal cruelty and stuff, so when they heard i got a rabbit, then another one, i dont think they were too surprised. My nan still doesnt believe they can be litterbox trained but i spose in her day rabbits were cheap and everywhere and growing up in rural ireland u ate whatever u could so i can kinda understand that but anyway when they go in the tray infront of her she keeps going ‘ah coincidence’ lol
I’m taking Kahlua to work this afternoon (picking her up at lunch) I’ll let you know how everyone reacts LOL
