Ok. So again, I couldn’t control myself. I went to school today and there was this little baby bunny. She’s now at home!! Her name is Lemoncello (Lemon, to friends, i.e. everybody here at BB). I will post a picture of her soon. I wanted to take pics today, but she is too scared, I do ot want to bother her. Now I am scared! She is in a separate room, far, far away from Baileys, who has not acted any differently so far. What worries me is that I have noticed two things:
1/Her poop is light green!? What does that mean?
2/She does this strange movement with her head. Kind of slow nodding. She looks to the right and it looks as though her head involuntarily went back to the left. Any clues anyone?
I am feeding her hay and pellets.
She is beyond cute, but I am worried about these two things and about Baileys’ reaction. Hope everything is ok, or else, my hubby will kill me!!
Thank you!!
The poops could be from a bad diet – if she is pooping I wouldn’t worry for the first couple of days while you give her the proper diet.
The head movement from side to side is called ‘scanning’. I am not 100% certain what this is or what causes it but some rabbits, mostly albinos though, will move their head slowly from side to side in order to get a better view of things. I believe it is caused by the bunny trying to get a more ‘binocular’ view of things with having the eyes on the side of the head. I have seen it in a couple of perfectly healthy rabbits before. It reminds me of them being Cylons. ![]()
Edit: From a Q and A about this I found on the internet:
Some rabbits have an odd behavior called “scanning.” It seems to be most prevalent in albino rabbits, but no one knows why. It may be an exaggerated motion associated with the normal nystagmus of the eyes.
Nystagmus is the natural, microscopic movement that every vertebrate eye makes constantly–including ours! It’s what makes vision possible. As our eyes microscopically change the visual field at this tiny level, constantly (we are not aware of it, and you can’t see or feel it), the eye’s photoreceptors are constantly stimulated by the ever-changing light hitting them. This is why we can see. Without nystagmus, we would not be able to see.
Some people have suggested that albino rabbit “scanning” (the side to side movement of the head you’re seeing) is an “outgrowth” of normal nystagmus–but no one knows for sure.
But the bottom line is that it’s a genetic trait that is not harmful, and it’s nothing to worry about.
is this the one you were asking about before? the lop?
not sure about the poop… i think i’ve heard the nodding referred to as “scanning”. it’s kind of like scoping out territory i believe. i think that’s what that means.
Thank you Markusdark!!! That is just a relief!!! Beka, yes it is the Lop I have been asking about. I just couldn’t take it anymore… So here she is. She was super shy for a while, so I just waited for her to come out, slice of apple at the ready! She finally did. She is soooo beautiful! i hope I can make her happy and I hope, more than anything, that when Baileys is ready, i can introduce them and they get along! When ther’s a will there’s a way, so I think it’ll be all right. Anyway, she as her huge cage now, with a teddy bear to snuggle with, she has already used her litter box several times, yes sirrrr!!! And she will be warm cozy tonight. And what is more important, there’ll be nobody bothering her tomorrow!!! I am at peace, but nervous… about the future bonding!
I finally took some pictures, the first one is at school and the second one already at home, her forever home!

Oh, she’s very cute :~)
I don’t know many people who could resist her!
Take things slowly, but I’m sure you’ll all be resting comfortably tonight. I wouldn’t worry about the future.
she’s very cute!
the green poop might be related to the pellets, since they might be crappy quality and have a lot of food dye in them. i would transition her over to something healthier for sure. the thing with her head does sound like scanning to me as well – but i’d keep an eye on her for the next while to see if they symptoms change or worsen.
cotton does the scanning thing too up n down up n down a little to the side up n down. he has bleu eyes and someone told me he carries the vienna gene might have some thing to do with it. gosh poor little bun I knew you couldn’t resist
welcome home Lemon. sleep tight baby girl, you’ve got a kind, caring mama who will look out for you from now on. you’re one lucky bun!
Oh My she is wickedly gorgeous!
Probably a visit to a good vet would be worthwhile too when you are ready.
What the Heck? Are people just dropping unwanted bunny’s off at your school?
You must be a very patient animal person to be able to get them to come to you! She is a lucky girl. Cute name.
Welcome Home little Lemon!
Oops from me – I just read the other post: I want to adopt her
I thought the bunny was just living outside the school or something. Now I realize she was “given” to the school.
CUTE!!
My lionhead Kahlua does that nodding too!! All the time….She does it more so when she’s figuring she’s going to jump or something. It’s pretty cute!
Thank you all for your advice!!! She is pooping normally today. She has been eating with enthusiasm and she is a bit friskier. Anyway, she is way shier than Baileys was when he arrived, but she must have been scared at school, so I am being very patient. I am just happy to see her slowly relaxing. The ‘scanning’ thing is actually cute, specially now that I know it’s nothing to worry about. She has one ear up, the other down, so it looks as though her standing ear was an antenna and she was scanning the environment ! =). Unless there is any need, I am planning a visit to the vet, probably next week. I don’t want to stress her more now.
I’ll keep you updated on her development!!
next week sounds fine for the vet visit. it’s not for an emergency… just check-up/initial exam. you’re going to do great by her.
when is Baileys neuter?

Oh Beka!! I am really on a neuter countdown!!! LOL! As soon as his ‘jewels’, (I don’t know what ‘nice’ word to use in English for that part of his anantomy! It is my second language after all…!) drop. They haven’t yet, but the last time he had a vet check up, which was 10 days ago, the Dr said they were already coming out. So hopefully, in May. I am running like crazy, trying to keep everyody happy, both four and two legged individuals (AKA hubby). I spend time with the dogs, cats and Baileys and Lemon as equally as possible. It is hard when you have so many and have to have different mommy time! But I am managing fine, and I really enjoy it, I wouldn’t have it any other way!!
Lemon is adorable! ![]()
HAHAHAHA!!! Adorable, that is exactly what Lemon is doing!!!! Thanks for sharing it!!
What a gorgeous bunny! *swoons from cuteness* Good for you for taking her home! ![]()
Her “scanning” if that ends up being what it is should lessen a bit as she becomes comfortable and confident with her surroundings. She may do it more when she’s stressed so it’s good that you are going to let her settle in.
Just watch and make sure the scanning doesn’t make her fall down or become unbalanced as that could mean it is something else.
She is so cute!!!
