So…What does everyone do for a living?

The reason I ask is it’s hard to decide what to do with your life/for a living, and we all seem to have soo much in common, it’d be neat to see if any of us are in the same line of work!!

I hope to return to school for DVM and MBA, but right now I work for Emerson Intrument and Valve services; The facility itself repairs valves and intsturments used in industry. I do the paperwork for the guys who do the work, getting everything entered in the computer and stuff; I also do the paperwork for the field service guys ( who repair valves at the plant site) and do the paperwork when people want to order parts for a valve NOT my dream job but it’s OK for now and I work with good people. It’s a little stressful sometimes but that’s the way it goes!

So what does everyone else do!! I’m especially interested in those who work from home-that’d be MY dream job!!

I’ve been a commercial artist/illustrator for many years and kinda morphed into the company’s web mistress/database/web technician. I still do illustrations and graphic design, but I enjoy the programming too. I love what I do, which is good because the job market where I live doesn’t pay as well as say Dallas, or Houston, so I freelance at night too.

Oh, and I support 4 buns, 3 cats and one poor old out-numbered dog.

            Kathy

              xnovalentine,
Don’t throw out your career plans due to one crazy boss just yet. Think that one over, maybe intern at another place or volunteer for 2 weeks. My reason is that I’ve seen people give up their career plans due to one bad experience, when that field loses a person who would make it better for all if they had stayed. My sis-in-law was a social worker, and she had some loo-loo bosses, but got into a better org. and was fine. She changed careers later for very different reasons, but it was a well thought out choice. If that crazy boss ruins your career plans, imagine the lives that were ruined that came to her/him for help!

k&k, Please read my latest reply to the thread “newspaper nibbler.” I am in transition but getting back on my feet. Oh, and had a great report from the Dr. today so that’s all better. Whew! Basically I’m an artist & editor turned Art Museum Curator/Administrator.

I’m not working now.  I was in real estate for many years. Now I just play a lot of tennis.  I still have one kid at home in high school. BUT what I would really like to do is start my own business.  The million dollar question is what to do!!! I just can’t figure it out.

For figuring out your next steps, try doing some of the exercises in Richard Bolles “What Color is your Parachute” and any one of Barbara Sher’s books.

i am a mom and a student (but i am on school hiatus until August 2009). i work a day or two a week in retail… which is stupid and i hate it… but whatever. it gets me outta the house. i’m fortunate that my husband has a good job and can support me, our child and our bun. it’s not a glamorous life, but whose is? when i do go back to school, i will be in the Dental Hygiene program. i was a dental assistant right out of high school, state certified and everything, but when i got married and had Michael, i let that lapse and just never went back to it. i love the healthcare field, but not super long shifts and crazy hours (so nursing is out), and i do love teeth. many people get the “ew, gross, mouths” thing when i tell them what i did and what i will be doing, but i love it.

Oh yeah I forgot about that book!  I’ll read it.  And Beka – could you clean Edson’s teeth?  It’s really hard to get a good look but they looked a little yellow! What color should they be?  I’m sure they can’t be like Hollywood white, can they?

My interests lie in political theory and international relations, especially in promoting free trade.

I am currently paying my bills as a Senior Marketing Associate at The Advisory Board Company in Washington, DC, marketing leadership development programs to hospitals and health systems worldwide. Not at all an interest of mine (neither marketing nor health care), but I do have bills and until I become not-lazy and find a job I’m interested in, this is what I’m doing!

officially i am an architectural construction engineering technologist.  it’s a mouthful.

basically i’m a designer working in the residential field providing building permit and construction plans.  recently i picked up a builder client and have been doing changes to their base plans for every sale they get, but i’m finding this work really boring and difficult to stay on schedule with.  i really like to do custom designing directly for clients without the builder as the middle-man because i get to meet with them & develope the design as we go.  but having only recently gone freelance i need to take what i can get.

i love working from home mostly… i save sooo much on gas & makeup & lunches out not to mention saving travel time & being able to do chores during the day for work breaks.  the house is so much more organized / tidy now.  but the best part is having the fur babies around me all day.  the down side is staying productive & focused on work when i need to.  it’s reallllly tough some days.  and it can be lonely too which i think is why i hang out on binky bunny all day long

I was in event planning/marketing until a few years ago when I started my own business. Now I’m a massage and rehab therapist for dogs and horses. I love it!

I’m a freelance Illustrator (primarily children’s books) and get to work from home….. To be honest I wish I worked in a studio based environment because working from home is very lonely. I don’t even get to talk to people much really. I generally converse with clients via e-mail. I find it difficult to motivate myself and too easy to get distracted. I probably spend way too much time cleaning everyday and hanging out with the animals. Not that it’s a bad thing, would just probably get more done if I stuck to my agenda!!

I’m thinking that I would either love a part time job working with animals (just for a change of scene) or teaching. I had never considered animal massaging but it’s definitely something i’m going to look into!

I co-ordinate a half dozen research and scientific teams for the Dept. of Energy at Lawrence Berkeley Labs in… well Berkeley. Not much of a scientist myself but I know how to manage people.

Annette owns a travel agency/tour company.  It’s home based so sitting around reading binkybunny all day is just fine.

Scooter is a civil/environmental engineer by training, and for the next three months is an assistant professor at the Department of Chemistry, University of Alberta.  This involves teaching and research into detecting and understanding how toxic chemicals are released and behave in the environment, the better to know how to deal with them.  alum.mit.edu/www/wong.charles.shiu  I’ve submitted my resignation letter–my department chair currently hates my guts because of this AND because I’m convalescing at home for the next little while and he’s stuck teaching my course –and will be taking up a prestigious endowed chair in Winnipeg, Annette’s home town, on July 1st.  That’s all we can say about it for now, until the Canadian federal government officially announces the position sometime between tomorrow and mid-June.  They won’t tell us, and they were supposed to do it in November, but hey, you know what the government’s like…any government.

markusdark:  If you know how to manage ego-centric scientists, we can sure use you up here!

I am a software developer with a Silicon Valley startup, and I also manage a small group of developers.  I’ve worked at some huge Silicon Valley companies like Silicon Graphics, Applied Materials and Sony, and I’ve also worked at a bunch of startups (I think this is my fourth now).  My current job is programming a data center management application, and I have done all kinds of programming jobs over the years.  At one point I had a director level position with a group of 17 people in the US and Isreal reporting to me, and I absolutely hated that, so I moved closer to the technology again.  I have worked with various web technologies over the years, which is how I got involved with doing the website for The Rabbit Haven.

                                                I’m just a mum.
I’ve spent most of my life up here home schooling my kids, but they are both about out of school, so now I am not sure what to do with myself.

Want to return to school…I can just see it now, me and my kids all attending the same university. Like in the Goofy movie. I would give anything to become a nurse and work in the cancer center up here…there are so many people who need help in this field. It’d be a way to give back to the people who pulled me through my diagnosis.
Of course, there’s my fear of blood to deal with. >.< It kind of thwarts my desire to be a veterinary rabbit specialist too.

K&K – I studies equine science at Virginia Tech, which certainly helped with the anatomy portion. There are several animal massage certification schools out West – the one I went to was in Maryland. I got certified in both equine and canine massage there. I have my own business and also work out of an orthopedic vet’s office to rehab dogs post-surgery, muscle strains, etc. Most are police and search and rescue dogs. I’ve even rehabbed a few cats after surgery! I’m in the process now of getting certified in canine rehabilitation, using things like the under-water treadmill, exercises, etc to get dogs back into work after an issue. I plan to take the equine rehab class soon, too.

I’ve tried massaging Cadbury several times, but she just won’t sit still! She seems to like it, though – her muscles are so tiny!!

Mimzmum – JUST a mum?  Seriously, I don’t have children only because I know they would be harder than any job I’ve ever had, and I’m not sure I’ll ever be ready for that kind of 24/7 work.

Babybunsmum – Both my husband and  I love working from home for many of the same reasons.

Rabbitsmba – I was also a commercial writer/producer -(I worked for the Fox affiliate for 6 years before going freelance)

I dropped the Producer title a over a year ago because…I did it for 13 years and hated it.   I was also tired of making commercials and PSA’s and so I focused on writing for other stuff like human interest segments and longer pieces.

So now I do a little broadcast writing and BinkyBunny.com (BinkyBunny.com actually started as a fun side relief hobby to get my mind off of the stress of producing) I have an old rickety website that really needs to be updated, but you can see some of my old cheesy stuff at http://www.fosterideas.com.  It has two players in the demo section that turn on at the same time, so you have to shut one off in order to see it.  I had meant to use that site as a demo to get new jobs, but I was lucky enough to have steady clients, and I never really did much with it, so don’t judge too harshly! It’s ghastly.

Your jobs and career goals all sound so fascinating! I’m really impressed. (and MimzMum, I agree with the others – as someone who Can’t have children, I admire your job all the more. Bet you’re a great Mom!)

Part-timers who work at home: I would love to get some part-time work at home in addition to my part-time job at the museum, at least until they offer me full time. I don’t want to count on that or wait for it if I don’t have to. I haven’t been able to land any work to do from here, partly because I do my job hunting primarily on line (NOT a good promoter of myself) and partly because the FL market is pretty bereft of local work opportunities or connections for tele-commuting. Anyway, Suggestions or connections would be welcome. Email me if you have advice or ideas, or just want to see my resume to know about my skills and background. I couldn’t get local job shops to send me freelance work for copywriting (I can write & edit) or for art related work (I used to do illustration, can design, can curate and project manage in the arts.)  Love digital photography and Photoshop. Anyway, probably barking up the wrong tree with all of that, but thought I’d ask. Thanks. (Editor, edit thyself.)

don’t say that!!!!!!! that is amazing you home-schooled your children. i don’t think i’d have the patience for that. maybe this is bad to say, but i like the couple hours of quiet when Michael is in preschool. it’s parents like you who really go above and beyond to raise your children that i have the utmost respect for! the work you did is the most valuable that anyone can do. it’s unfortunate that in our society, stay at home mothers don’t get the respect they deserve.

I work for the Police Department, Property and Exhibits officer. I recieve found, lost and seized property for storage and release. I also organise DNA testing, like finger prints hair samples etc, and I love it.

Is it true that police have the best dope?

This semester, I’m teaching 7 classes. I work for several programs. This semester, my favorite class is my foundations grammar class. They want to learn, so it makes me motivated. I also teach some college credit English classes.

I really love it.. I’m interning at the public library right now and it’s really interesting to me the “power” librarians have over what information gets out there.. and what doesn’t. There are a lot of issues you wouldn’t even think a librarian would have to deal with.. it’s a lot more than just checking out the books

But, I’m still young and don’t know where I’m going in life, really. I hope to be a director of a public library, at some point, or maybe an academic library. We’ll see…

Did you teach/TA any of these? That would be crazy!!

In 2000 I worked on the census in Colorado – I mapped remote locations and had to walk down lots of roads that my car could not make it down to see if anyone lived there or not. It was really fun!

In 2000 I also went to cooking school – the school hired me as an instructor. I was the head of the recreational dep for many years – taught developed classes & menus. I tried to make a go as a Personal Chef – but with the economy doing so well (hint of scarcasm) it is hard to get people to pay me to cook for them.

Now, my husband & I are starting to design & build furniture. The bunny’s love to hang out under our new Sushi Table & Chairs. What do y’all think of them?

The frame will be steel. There will be removable wood & NIC panels. It is going to have 4 levels and 2 large doors. It’s going to be styling!

The table & chairs are steel and wood. We have also made a few regular chairs. We have plans for a bistro table & stools. Since we have just started building for ourselves, we don’t yet know what to charge. Although, we have seen similar furniture on the web for well over $2000 dollars.

                                                                                                                        Bunny’s are extra – a LOT extra! 🙂

I’m an Academic Director. I love my job! I went from a tutor to a teacher to an Academic Director. I love my job! It is very, very stressful because I am responsible for 15-30 teachers and 200-600 students (HR and academics included) but it’s fun! There is never a dull moment! I never take lunch, I’m always on the go (which is not necessarily a good thing), I interact with a ton of people every day, which also means in my free time, I stay far, far away from people. Haha! I’m only with animals when I am not at work. Oh, and the husband, of course!

I studied to become an English Teacher first, and then I specialized in Literature. I taught for 15 years, until 2 years ago I was offered a poosition as the Head of the English Department at a school nearby. (Sounds like I am 80 ysrs old, but I am not, I am 38). Now I no longer teach, and I miss that, I have to admit… and I also know about stress Liza! I am responsible for 15 teachers and 300 children!!  But I love it, and it gives me time to work with animals: I am also a Dog Trainer, and I work on that 2 mornings a week plus another I use to train my two border collies as shepherd dogs. We have done some exhibitions already!! I am really proud of them! Fortunately, I get to have time to share with my own animals.
