I LOVE shelties, and that pup is sooooo cute!!!! They are not that common here these days but I see the odd one once in a while. Do you think she will be ok with the bunnies?
You are so lucky to have everything coming together like this but you deserve it after all you have been through lately.

Cute – I think puppies will be harder to have around the rabbits because they are younger and more active than older dogs.

I would never ever leave them alone unsupervised and I’m sure the puppy will need training too.

i think dogs can live with rabbits but always under supervision.  even my gentle & tolerant bogart cold easily trample one of the buns if the mailman walks onto our front porch.  so i never leave him alone with the buns… although i have drifted off on the couch unplanned which is a risk. 

i think with a young & lively pup you’d just need to treat it like you would bringing a new bun into the house… have closely monitored dates for a while until you get the feel for how they act together.  really… if you love animals & want lots of pets, then i think you just have to be open to having to accomodate their living arrangements.  which might mean operating a baby gated household

I’ve got my mortgage preapproval and my city assistance approval and I go to look at a possible condo on Monday. 

OOO I love puppies! she is adorable!

I got a Yorkshire terrier puppy last August and was soooooo paranoid about him being with the rabbits. I panicked at one point because I love him but the rabbits came first because they were here first and I didn’t think it was going to work. To begin with I only allowed him supervised visits and put him on his leash, correcting him any time he tried to run or play with the bunnies….which he did a lot!!! he used to get that fixed staring look on his face that I could never judge what he was thinking but after a couple of months he learned that he was not allowed to chase the bunnies or harass them in any way. Now he gets on fine with them and hardly notices they are there. He loved Phoebe when she was going through her hormonal stage because she followed him everywhere humming at him and he thought that she wanted to play and would get very excited about it but always gentle with her. Now she has been spayed and isn’t interested in him that way he generally ignores her! I would still never leave him along unsupervised with them though, although it’s nice that they can live alongside each other harmoniously.

I have 2 Australian Shepherds which are herding dogs like Shelties are- and they are good with the cats and my bunny Cotton.  But they are supervised with the bunny when she is out- and I do not allow her on the floor with them as they are so playful and wrestle together alot- I am afraid they would step on her by accident.

The herding breeds can be more challenging to work with to get them used to smaller pets- cats, bunnies, etc without chasing.  Their FIRST instinct when something runs away from them- is to bring it back.  My Aussies are half siblings and are from a long line of show Aussies as opposed to working Aussies- and I was surprised at how strong their herding instinct is.  Both have high herding instinct.  My male Aussie has caught 3 different wild rabbits because they “run away” from him- the poor things I have to go out and pick up these wild bunnies and get them back over the fence.  We block off the gates- but they find the tiniest ways to get into the yard.

Oh Loppy, what an exquisite poochie! ^^ My favorite is the collie, but shelties are running a close second. And this one is the cutest! ^^

congrats again about the house. my initial thought would be to wait to get a dog until you knew for sure you were able to handle the new mortgage, utility bills, AND your buns were ALL spayed and neutered. there are always going to be dogs needing homes. i know you’re really excited about the dog (and she is beautiful, we had a sheltie growing up), but PLEASE think it over first. i’m not trying to come down on you, i know you truly care about animals, but your first responsibility is to the pets you already have.

That sounds lovely, though I agree that you have to watch out for the guys that swoop in on vulnerable women, which you are right now. Still, I think you’re mature enough at this stage of your life to do some dating and find out who’s out there. A houseful of boys is sometimes a nice place to hang with buddies and still have friends. If you can’t go slow (ie. don’t get hooked into him emotionally too fast) then get prepared to be VERY safe and careful.

I have been thinking about the puppy, and I have to say that I felt the same way as Beka. It’s not that you can’t take care of one – far from it- it’s just the allocation of time in 24 hours: horses, bunnies, homework, HOUSEWORK, DATING – makes adding a puppy a major undertaking that you don’t really need right now. He’s beautiful, yes, but he isn’t your lost luvie and you really will go through grieving no matter what you do. This might be the best puppy for another little girl who grows up with him and loves him just like you did. Consider letting him go to another home. Otherwise, if you MUST have him, put that guy to work on puppy care, not playing. Love me, love my managerie! (Sheesh, where’s the spell check?)
