I was asked by Save A Bunny to help out with a Rabbit Outreach project.  A local high school was having a ‘carnival day’ at their school and the organizer, a bunny owner herself, asked us to be there to help educate people about bunnies.  I could spend a good two pages writing about various misconceptions that people had about buns, what the 4-H there was doing wrong and so on but the thing is that, in the end, they learned new information about buns and that is what the outreach is about – it isn’t about judging people but educating them.

Now, my two buns were real troopers but were actually opposite in personalities at the outreach.  Maryann spent almost all of her time hiding in the cardboard house I had while shy Dono was out and about, raising his head up to any hand that came near him for pets.  Only when he was getting a good tooth-purr on did Maryann come out and want some too.  It was cold, windy and they just loved it.

In the end, I feel that we informed many, really made an impact upon 4 people directly involved with rabbits, got 2 new foster people and a possible 3 future buns adopted out (people who were ‘thinking’ about getting bunnies and after talking with us decided that they were for them).

I wanted to get some pictures but I have an old digital camera that burns out the batteries after 4 shots so it was dead that day.

That’s great – it can be very satisfying educating people. I’m glad Dono came out of his shell too.

Well done markus!  You know what happens when you get good at this kind of stuff, don’t you?  Marcy puts your number in her cell phone and well, it sort of all over then…

wow -that’s great opportunity, so glad you could help out. How fantastic to have found some possible fosters and adopters from the event too. I think even knowing the info you’re sharing may help some bunnies currently in homes is a really good feeling.

I’ve seen bunnies who are vibrant and friendly at home become very shy at shows. Dono did come to a number of Haven shows, so might have been more used to coping with groups of people.

Osprey – It is already over with Marcy. I was coming home from camping last week and noticed I had a message on my cell phone. It was Marcy asking if I could come over and help out as the weekend had been hell and it wasn’t over yet. So, completely worn out from my camping trip, I took a quick shower and drove over there for two hours to fill hay racks and water bottles.

I did tell her though that I would only do outreach programs that were indoors from now on. Shaved head + all day in the sun = a grumpy dad that even the buns won’t bother for a treat.

Gravehearted – actually that is what I thought too about Dono. It quickly reminded me of him at the Rabbit Haven when I went to meet him for the first time.

What is my wish? That Rabbits are no longer considered livestock in the US. It won’t happen but it is a lovely dream.
