Hi all! I havent been here in a long time. I should check back more often. Looks like a different set up too. Course i prolly just forgot what it looked like. So anyways,my dear bunny Rascal (my girl) seems to have developed E. Cuniculi of the eye. I saw a spot on her eye one day,and thought hmm what in the world is that. I waited a bit,and it got worse. Developed into a full cataract. In that time i got her to her vet. She wasnt sure what it was,as she doesnt deal with eye problems much. So she referred us to an eye doc at a specialist place. I researched him,he seems to be the best perhaps in the country. Sounds good to me. Well she went there, i guess it was end of january now. He took a look and told me bout the E.C. of the eye. I was told to take her back to my reg vet and get blood work done. He also gave me two different ointments to put on her eye. Her titers from the blood test were high,so they ordered Panacur for her to take. She just got done her 6 weeks of it the other day.

I took her back to the eye doc last night,as her eye has gotten worse not better over time. He gave me two options for it. Option A- do nothing, watch, observe,if she appears in pain,or eye gets alot worse, have her eye removed. Option B- cataract surgery to remove the cataract (obviously lol) and the abcess that grew in there now. With 50/50 chance of regaining vision. I didnt like Option A too much,as i didnt wanna till she was in pain, that didnt seem right. So i opted for Option B. I know theres a risk either way,but i figured that was the best option at this time.

The regular vet called this morning,as he faxed over his findings. She just asked how she is doing and what not. She was feeling a bit off from the antibiotics for awhile there. But recently she has gotten back to herself. Eating just fine, still loving hay, pellets etc. Runs, binkies, then chills out. All normal for her. They actually seemed shocked when they called several times during the 6 weeks that she was doing good. My friend told me alot times buns die from it,so maybe thats why they were shocked. I think it helps she has a bunny bf living next to her ,to keep her spirits up. Binky has been the ever loyal bf hehe. Staying by her side through it all. So im not sure if they want me to run her back up there or not for more blood work, they didnt say, didnt ask.

So what do you guys think? Did i choose right? It is gonna cost he said between 800-1000 bucks for the surgery. I got approved for care credit up to 500 bucks. My friend said call and maybe they can up it for me. Worth a shot. Every lil bit helps,ya know? Well thats my update on my girl and boy. Binks is healthy and fine,no problems. Thanks everyone! Now i will go read some posts, been way too long now. Catch ya laters.

Hi. My name is Delroy. Please read my story. I need your help.
            UPDATE 2/1/08

NOTE FROM SAVEABUNNY FOUNDER: Thanks to generous donations from our supporters Delroy received the eye surgery he needed. His left eye was badly infected, causing deep pain and posing the very real threat of a fatal infection. Dr. Carolynn Harvey removed his eye and within days Delroy was looking and feeling so much better as his pain and infection disappeared.

I think when a pet has an eye removed it is more traumatic for the owner than the pet itself.  Often by the time such a surgery is recommended it is a relief to the pet and they adapt well- but it is awful for the owner to “see” and there can be feelings of guilt as well.  I would freak it I had to have this done- it is like a paranoid/phobia for me- not sure why.

If they think the surgery will correct the eye- even if it does not restore sight- then that is an good option especially if you feel more comfortable with that.  But if the $800- $1000 does not have a high success rate of the eye not requiring further expensive treatment- then removal has to be considered.   Surgery with lifetime eye drops would be reasonable outcome- but surgery then more antibiotics and then maybe more surgery and possible removal would be hard on your wallet and on the bunny.

My girl Binky had her eye removed due to severe glaucoma. She functions completely fine with only one eye. She just has to turn her head a bit more when she wants to give me the Stink Eye…

Thanks again. Yeah i hear you on that one,i will be asking lots of questions before i decide what to do. As of right now,i have not made an appointment for surgery. She is young, only a little over a year old. Cant believe my girl is going through this. She didnt like the drops one bit,she has been super mad at me all day for that one. And i have to do it again. Ugh. I dont like her being mad at me lol. Gotta do what you gotta do i guess though. Mad or not. Gotta help my baby girl get better somehow or other. Im gonna do some research on this, and her options. Ive done alot already on her condition, but not on the actual surgery yet. Off to do that. Now if my darn printer would work so i could print this stuff out…..lol….

Me again. Well i asked someone on an expert site what they thought of the situation. They basically reiterated what katnip said. I didnt think of it that way. So yeah, surgery after surgery to fix it would not be very good. For my wallet or for her. Im gonna be asking more questions to him for sure. If it was just the surgery than drops for lifetime as you mentioned, that would be reasonable yes. Other way, no. I read bout another bunny just like mine, same coloring too oddly enough. The adoption place ended up doing a different kinda surgery that didnt remove his eye,but took out the bad stuff and injected some kinda gel into which would make a fake eye. He had an infection afterwards though, but with antibiotics,he came through okay. His eye eventually turned a blue/gray as it was blind. I dunno if my doc would do something like that. I think he would just remove it. Definetly more research is needed on my part. I also read that some eye docs put in some kinda ball type thing then sew shut the eye lids to keep the skull from sinking in. Or they can put eye sized ball and keep the eye lids open, thus making it appear they still have an eye. Im gonna ask bout that too. So yeah,im gonna buzz him soon as i can. Thanks everyone again!

Wow, what a tale for Rascal.  Poor thing, but it sounds like her future will be bright and I think you are doing the right thing by researching all the options before settling on a decision. I agree that the removal of the eye might be better than the removal of the cateract. I found a few things online (you’ve probably already seen them-but just in case you haven’t)

I am a little late to the party on this thread, but I wanted to chime in that I too have a bunny who lost an eye.  She was dumped in a park as a baby and attacked by a cat.  Both eyes became infected, and one had to be removed.  She is almost completely normal, she functions fine with the one eye.  The only difference I see with her is that she is less likely to explore new territory than her two trio mates, and sometimes she likes to stay in the pen whiloe the other two are out playing.

Thanks again! Yup Ive done lots of research already. Boy have i learned alot! Even the scientific word for cataract surgery lol. phacoemulsification. Supposed to learn something new every day right? Anyways. I read alot of articles, from our country and others. Seems to me that with the surgery itself (cataract) it may be difficult to get it all out in one shot. Also,if they do get it out, alot of times the same condition can redevelop. Which in turn may lead to more surgery or enucleation. So therefor, its looking like eye removal may very well be the way to go with this. They said with proper eye treament (drops ointment) some rabbits may recover on their own,but Rascals condition seems to be at an advanced stage that i dont think any drops or ointment can fix. I got a list of questions to ask the specialists and the regular vet as well.

One I want to throw at you guys is,my two buns are essentially bonded. They are not living together, but side by side still. I wasnt sure if it was a good idea to try while Rascal was going through this. But i did notice that when i took her to the eye doc, which was only a couple hours that she was gone,Binks was soooooo mad when we got back. I let him out for run time,he tore apart the phone book i have out for them like one lil crazy bun. He was growling and grunting at me too. So i can only imagine what he will do when she is away for half a day or however long it takes to do this type of surgery. So anyways, question is, do you think it would be a good idea to take Binks along while she gets her surgery? He would be in a pen next to hers, before and after. I havent even scheduled anything yet,as I am still doing my research lol. So thats it for now. I think. Else Ill come back.
