Ok, don’t panic. You probably just nipped the quick, or the little vein that runs down the nail. These bleed a lot, but aren’t as bad as they look. Try dipping a q-tip in either cornstarch or baking powder and holding it again the nail until it stops bleeding. For future nail trimmings, you may want to buy a styptic power that is made to stop the bleeding – you can find them in any pet shop. Keep an eye on the nail, and if it won’t stop bleeding or looks like it bled A LOT, you may want to call the vet. Good luck!

You may want to add a tiny bit of water to make a paste. Is it still bleeding?

Corn starch. Pour a bit into a paper towel and apply directly to the nail. Stops the bleeding really fast and you don’t have to worry about the bunny licking it off.

yes, cornstarch works really well.  you pack it dry on the cut end of the nail with the qtip & try to hold the qtip there to hold the cornstarch on it.  this has happened to me before too… i can sympathize.  blood freaks me out too… but it’s ok as long as you get the bleeding to stop with the powder.  how are you doing over there?  have you gotten the bleeding to stop?

I would not use baking soda (high in sodium=salt is painful in a wound) I prefer corn starch, flour or styptic powder are best.

Wow, good to know Scarlet. Everything I’ve read says to use either cornstarch or baking soda, but your high sodium comment makes perfect sense! Thanks!

i had never heard of the cornstarch i had this problem because my dog has an extra toe and so she has no feeling in it but the nail grows at an incredible rate and it grows back on itself right up into the toe and when you cut a small piece off it poors of blood, its not like looking for the pink bit its just all weird, so the cornstarch thing is good to know!

Hey no problem and thank you! I’ve actually gotten some in a cut in my finger before and let me tell you it hurt like the devil. I would also hesitate to use baking power too, as it also contains baking soda and most still have aluminum in it and that isn’t really something you want going straight into the blood stream either.
