Help, I think Chloe just ate a rubberband. She is still eating, but I am very worried. Any suggestions?
hmmm, I don’t know. I know it can cause problems but Bindi ate a very thin rubberband and was fine. I would keep a close eye on her poops and make sure she’s pooping normal.
What size of rubber band? Keep a very close eye on her, make sure she gets lots of fiber and if she starts acting strange at all, take her to the vet ASAP. Also take a look at her teeth to make sure it is not wedged in between them. I think it will be O.K. but just be careful and take an extra look around and pick up anything else she might get into.
It was a pretty large rubberband, about a 3 inch circle. She ate her whole salad a little while ago. Is there any chance she will pass it?
I just cleaned her litter box so I can tell if she poops. If she has a blockage, can she poop at all?
Wow that is a pretty big rubber band. How wide was it? If she devlops a blockage, her poops will get smaller at first, then they stop and gas and bloating ensue, then it is very dangerous and she should go to the vet ASAP. She could pass it, that is why fiber is extremely important to move things along and push things out. Kale is high in fiber so you might want to try some of that.
Thanks alot, I will try the kale. Do you know if an xray would pick it up?
I went through this a few months ago. I’m not saying it will happen for you, but I just encouraged more hay and gave her extra food to help get it through her and all was well. Follow what the others said–their advice is always the best =) keep us updated?
A rubberband itself will not show on an x-ray. If your bunny gets ill and your vet wants to have an x-ray done- what it will show is the gas patterns in the stomach and can give the vet an idea of what is going on by what the stomach and intestines look like, etc- if anything is bloated or looks abnormal.
Dense objects such as a stone can show on an x-ray but especially metal (coins) and Pepto Bismal tablets and chews. Most soft things such as underwear (dogs love to eat underwear), rubberbands, and plush toys generally do not show up on x-ray- but any disruption they are causing might show.
hi Chloesmom – welcome to binky bunny, i am sorrry to hear that your bunny might have eaten a rubber band.
i would encourage her to eat as much hay as possible too, since it is what really helps move the digestive tract. As others mentioned keep a very careful eye on her in the next few days and take her into the vet if her poops get smaller or she stops eating. Please keep us updated/
My bun LOVES rubber bands. Actually she loves rubber/latex of any kind. If there’s a rubber band within 3 feet of the floor, she’ll find it. I am sure of two that she had swallowed and one I had pulled back up out of her mouth/throat (boy was she not amused). But so far, no poop issues. Just keep watching to make sure she eats and poops. It won’t poison her but they tend to eat them whole (cutting them into a long line then sucking them down like spaghetti) so they could cause an issue. But, like I said, my bun’s been fine since her encounter that I couldn’t thwart back in 2006.
Thanks for all of the help. Since last night, there are maybe 25 poops in her litter box. She didn’t eat much hay overnight, do you think we should skip the pellets today? I am so worried right now.
don’t skip the pellets…i’d suggest giving her a bit more. I just e-mailed you back, and i said in there that just making sure her Digestive System keeps moving is important so more food right now is better. You’ll see bad signs quicker if anything got stuck if you feed her a bit more!
yes – I would keep feeding her as normal if possible. i’d also encourage her to eat the hay if possible – maybe put it in a toilet paper core, so it’s more like a toy than boring hay?
did the poops look misshapen or smaller than normal?
I tried giving her the kale, but she wouldn’t eat it. I just gave her some greens and mixed some of the kale with it. She ate most of her pellets this morning. She usually eats them all though! She really hasn’t eaten much hay today. She has only had about 20 poops all day. I think they look a little smaller, but my husband says I’m crazy. She is acting very normal, running around and binkying. I guess it’s just wait and see. I’m a worried wreck=[
awww (((hugs))) it’s probably going to be fine, but i totally understand your stress level. i once fed my dog a pile of chicken bones (unintentionally of course) and it took a couple of days of normal poos from him for me to calm down. i seriously thought i killed my dog… i was horrified. sneaky dog got 2 pcs of chicken, 2 pcs of chicken bones and a days worth of extra kibble since the emerg vet line told me to feed him a bit every hour to compact around any bone pieces (he snorfed it all down in under 15 sec so we figured htere were big bits of bone in him).
oh no! ((((vibes)))) keep us updated!
OHHh *VIBES* Keep us posted!! How’s she doing now?
Plenty of happy all is O.K. *vibes* for your bun. What is the update?
Chloe update- so far all seems well. Her poops were few and far between all day yesterday. I called the vet and they thought I should be seen ASAP. Well shortly after the call, she sat in her litter box and munched her hay and pooped for about half an hour. I called the vet back and they said OK let’s wait and see what tomorrow brings. So, so far so good. So I am on day 2 of bunny watch, keep your fingers crossed!
My fingers are crossed! I read your other discussion, it sounds like she is has/had a blockage.
So sorry but glad she is making it through!
sending out “pass the rubberband” vibes!
