Both of my boys are very quiet bunnies. It doesn’t seem that Lilly is though. Last night when I was petting her she was making a very soft grunting sound and then just now, I was brushing her and trying to work out some more of the mattes and I swear she was yelling at me. When I tried to turn her over (this is the one thing I am having problems with) she started making this higher pitched crying noise. . . . I felt so bad for her as I assume that sound is bad. I know I’ve heard people talk about honking bunnies, but what are the sounds I’m hearing? I’m worried that she is upset or distressed and I don’t know what to do about it. . . At some point I have to get to her belly to really get at the mattes, I don’t really have a choice on that matter.

Me too. I just can’t get to Edson’s stomach and it’s driving me crazy. I have heard that screaming is pure pain. I have never heard the honking either but I think it means they are quite mad at you. Beka just had a great link to all these things so I’ll try to find it and be back!

I think a part of Lilly’s vocalization are being a female and not being spayed.

I do find my females too be more vocal overall – even my spayed ones – so spaying may decrease some of the hormonal vocalization, I just think that female rabbits are more vocal overall.

I have had some males who are vocal as well though now that I think of it but not like the females.

I wouldn’t say she’s in pure pain though when you are brushing her. I’ve only heard a few rabbits actually scream and it’s terror for sure – she cannot be terrified with you brushing her – uncomfortable, yes.

Oh this definately wasn’t screaming. . . I’ve heard a rabbit scream once (it was a wild one) that is a horrifying sound and one I hope I NEVER have to hear again. I probably should have picked a better word then yelling. . . . It was more like whimpering really.

Interesting, I didn’t know that females were more vocal. . . . Lol, as I type this she is grunting at one of my cats. . . time to go read that link!

                    Angora Girl,

Last week, when Holly was going through her false pregnancy, she would whimper any time she thought I was going to touch her. If I rubbed the floor she’d come for a head pat, but if I tried to touch her anywhere else she’d whimper.

Now, she only whimpers when she’s nervous at what I’m going to do. Once, I quickly petted her every where and she didn’t whimper at me once she realized I wasn’t going to pick her up or anything. I wanted to do this to make sure she wasn’t in any pain which she wasn’t.
