Since I harassed y’all with lots of questions on Picking up my bunny’s – I thought I would let you know how it was going.

One of the things Nancy (from Colorado HRS) told us in the Tune up class was that if we had to corner the bun while we both learned about Pick Ups – that was okay. It can also help since a cornered bun will face you not the corner. That way you can pet and talk to the bun before picking them up.

I had to pick them up several times during the Tune Up class, of course we were in a pen that was about 4 foot square – So, it was really easy. At home I am mostly still having to corner them – but not always. Kay gives more chase than Winston, but she is more dominant. She also struggles more.

I am also telling them “down” right before I put them down. They are already not exploding out of my hands.

Tune up class was Saturday – picked them each up one more time that night.

Sunday – picked up each one of them 3 times.

The rest of this week – pick up each one 2 times a day.

After this week continue to practice one pick up a day.

Sunday through Wednesday – they wanted nothing to do with me – unless I had Papaya, then they were in my lap! All I had to do was to walk in the room and they would thump at me.

Thursday morning I got a “Hi, what are you doing?” Bunny head butt. That afternoon I laid on the floor and read a magazine. They played around me, bit at the magazine and allowed me to give them a few pets.

When I picked Winston up yesterday afternoon he snuggled into my neck,   but still struggled a bit.

I am still getting some “How dare you!” thumps.

I am going to do the magazine thing again today(Friday).

I know, Long post. Maybe this will help some others with pick up’s!

wow that is a great idea. to say down jsut before putting them down cool. cotton is fussy about beign picked up I usually have to hold his scruff then lift from under him.   feda she does not like it and I don’t do it everyday so she won’t think everytiem she sees hands she is going to be picked up. however you have given me good idea here say pick up and down pick up once I got them cornered and down when well you know. and good going that class msut have been excellent. I want one.

This is a great thread! My daughter is still quite nervous about lifting her bun, even though Pip comes from a pet store and is very ‘hold’-able. Mimzy is much more skittish and I actually have a constant routine first thing each day when he’s removed from his pen for xpen play. Three times around the bottom of the cage at least. If he’s feeling particularly uppity, once up and down the stairs as well. I get those thumps regularly. But he really likes when I let him down on the bed for his monthly checkup, then he’s hard to catch.
I would add, the attitude of the person doing the picking up is very translatable to the bun. If you’re going into it scared, bunny is most likely going to give you a real dress down on handling. I was truly surprised, being a new bunny mum this year, just how sensitive they are to our feelings. (Not that they can’t be insensitive to them as well…as in the ‘bunny butt’ situations.) ^^

lol.  how true mimzmum.  great thread sagecat!

i have had some success in picking up pinky bun but have not maintained a consistant schedule like yours (or like i originally planned).  reading this has inpsired me to get cracking.  it’s never too late.  i had to corner baby bun for years to pick her up and now i can walk right upto her and scoop her up and have her jump the last step out of my hands when putting her back down.
