Just how stressful are car rides for rabbits? I know that Heath just kind of chills out after a travelling, but afterwards he seems a bit sulky. I was thinking of having my fiance come up to see this weekend, but he obviously can’t leave Heathcliff alone for the night (right?), and he’s nervous about subjecting him to a car ride. I mean, theoretically, my fiance could drop by late at night to feed Heath and then drive up to see me, and would be back the next morning by noon. But, wouldn’t that be more stressful than an hour of riding in the car?

If either are too stressful for rabbits, just not seeing him this weekend is an option, albeit an unhappy one.

I think you can leave a bunny overnight, in fact I often have. Anything more then that it’s best to arrange someone to come in and look after your bunny.

It depneds on the rabbit. I think all of my bunnies find the car stressful but not unbearable or intolerable. In fact I’m starting to take Kokanee out with me alot. I live in the city and my parent’s live outside of it(my vet is there too) so it’s about a 25 minute car ride to my parent’s house or the vet and we do that trip all the time.

IMHO it’s fnd for the bun to do the car ride or stay at home

When I had to make a quick trip home last week, I admit – I left my buns from Thursday afternoon (4 30) until Saturday at 6 30 pm. I gave everyone extra hay and filled their food bowls and water, and they were absolutely fine when I got back. Hungry, yes, but they were all quite fine

I think Heath will be just fine for one night!

I will leave my buns from Friday night until Sunday morning. They do fine. Although since the introduction of Dono, I have to add a little more food since he’s a pig.

I often travel for gigs and I will leave my bun from Friday to Sunday with no problem.  She has the full run of the house, and I leave 2 extra water bowls (in case she knocks one over), a full hay-rack, a plate of veggies, a clean litterbox, and about 1.5 days worth of pellets (so she can’t eat herself sick).

If it’s a 3-day weekend I will have someone come in mid-weekend to check and refresh the water bowls and pull the second plate of veggies out of the fridge.

I have a question on car rides in carriers: I still have the hard carrier like the one pictured on the other thread. It’s big enough for a mid-sized bun and sits well on the passenger seat, belted in place, in my car. Front bars, top can open if needed.

Do any of you put in something to make it more pleasant for longer trips, for peeing? Sometimes a trip to the vet can still be short, but nerve wracking, and a slighty soggy bunny comes out of the carrier when the destination is reached. Putting in some litter just seemed to make a mess in a corner but wasn’t effective. Also, treats to enhance the positive side of travel can get lost in the back of the carrier as bunny faces front.
Suggestions? (I have a file of good advice for future reference.)

A couple of thick towels keep my buns from sliding around. I have a small basket I put hay in and they will spend a lot of time sitting it that. (takes up maybe the back 1/3 of the carrier)

I’m moving this weekend. I have a “travel cage” (I know, I’m crazy!) that they travel in. It’s like a regular cage, with a plastic bottom, but it’s big enough for a small litter box, blanket and some toys. all four buns will ride in that. My buns ride well in the car, so I don’t anticipate any problems.

Holly is a little nervous when we ride in the car. I don’t do it often.

Last weekend, I had to leave for about 26/27 hours. Holly was great when I got back. However, the next day she started her nesting for her false pregnancy. I don’t know if that was linked or not. She’d been acting sort of moody before I left. Now she’s back to her nutty cute self.

I’m going to share an off thing I heard in 4-H many years ago. This is just something I heard or read in one of our bunny discussions. I never forgot it because I thought it was very strange. I’m not promoting this just sharing. They said if you are having trouble breeding a rabbit take her for a car ride. Who knows???

I am hoping to go visit my Mom end of this year hopefully and taking my bunny family with me. we may stay a while. it is a 16 hr drive and I have taken cotton for short outtings and into some stores carrying him. when we got home he was tired and just hung out in his favorite spot. I haven’t taken the little girl out yet she is quite young and I don’t want to overtax her and such I don’t want her to get soo tired she could die. a lady told me she got a dwarf bun for her children  (yes no kidding) and they petted it to death. gee didn’t they give it a break. thats why an adult needs to supervise and so I don’t want to overtax the little girl at this point. she too young for a long trip

I also have left my bun from Friday to Sunday and he’s fine. Also, I took him with me to visit my parents in Arizona…a 12 hour car ride (each way), but he was in his regular cage and he did fine…..it probably depends on the bun’s individual personality.
