Welcome here. To answer your question,

If they are a boy and girl you should not have them together; You could have a litter in no time! I saw your other post but I’ll address this here. It’s very hard to sex them yourself, as you could falsely think they are two girls. But I think if you know one is a boy, if you don’t know about the other (ie. you don’t see a penis-I’ll tell you how to see in a second) then you should really really seperate them. Those two aren’t even the same breed, it’s hard enough finding homes for purebred litters let alone a mixed breed. Bunnies can have up to 12 babies a litter and average 5-9!! That’s a lot! The petstore really shouldn’t have sold them together, but that’s petstores for you.

To sex them you need to look at their ‘peices’. If you gently press you can extend the penis (if there is one) so you can see it. A girl will have a slit that does not produce a penis, a boy will have an ‘o’ that will. Even vets can sex rabbits incorrectly and I strongly strongly suggest you get them to a vet for a checkup, sexing and to schedule their spay/netuers. Will you do that?

Here are some links so you could *TRY* and sex them; Trust me though even vets can get it wrong its very hard!

That all being said your bunnies are gorgeous and we hope you stay on our forum board to share pictures and stories and get advice when you need it! Your black and white bunny is a ‘dutch’ if you didn’t know already. I’m not sure about the white, someone else may be able to tell you though.

I would separate them until you can sex them for sure. And that cage is not really big enough for both of them, unfortunately…
and I noticed they were wearing collars? Take them off – that’s really dangerous if they get caught and strangle themselves…!

ahhh, looks like they’re plotting together already, they are sure cute.

Now, everyone who’s had a vet mis-sex their bunny(s), raise your hand! (I’ve got both hands and both feet in the air) One vet kept feeling my ‘boy’ for several months before another vet figured out she needed a spay, not a neuter….lol.

Definitely take off the colors and get them sexed as soon as possible – you DO NOT want an unexpected litter.

I also answered your post on the cage size.

What kind of pellets are you feeding your rabbits?

What kind of hay are you feeding them too?

the collars are already off, their lil feet kept getting caught in them so we took them off. for pellets we have the same brand they were feeding them in the store, and for hay its just timothy hay. they really like fruits and veggies. from what i tried from the links, we have 2 girls but i dont think i did it right.. we are getting a puppy pen soon, we ordered one. recommendations for pellets and stuff would be great. i dont want any baby bunnies, so ill get them spayed or w/e but they get along so well, its sad to have to separate them can they be together once they are spayed or neutered?

they really are great.. but we really did jump into bunny ownership without thinking. Chewy is very affectionate and comes when called, but madisson is more stand offish but when i put her on my lap she will stay there while i do my work and shes very nice. they LOVE to knock over there bowl and i try like CRAZY to keep the cage orderly but they just wont let it be! the petstore told us that they were the SAME BREED just different ages and the SAMe sexe, they also reccomended everything we bought, so i thought we were all set. i dont really know what im doing, ive had dogs, but they are so diffrent and i dont really know how to play with them
                        i need lots of help

oh they’re so adoreable!    welcome here

it’s probably disappointing to find out they need to be separated right now, but i also have to say that pet store buns are very very often mis-sexed and better safe than sorry with a pile of wee babies to look after in a month!   you can put together a second enclosure for less money than purchasing a second cage if you use NIC cubes (check out the bunny info> cool habitats page here… there are lots of links at the bottom of that page).  if you keep the 2 cages beside eachother leaving a bit of space you should be okay.  then they can see / smell each other without getting into any mischief thru the cage bars.  just be sure to block off one’s cage while the other is out playing so they do not try to nip of impregnate the other for the same reason.

when you get the bun buns altered, then you can re-bond them.  seems like a pain to have to do but even if they’re the same sex, they will be hitting puberty soon and will likely start to become aggressive & need separating anyways.  unfortunately pet stores rarely mention this before they make a sale.

i think the white one looks like a new zealand white, like my girl pinky!

yes, litter training is a problem. they just dont seem to get it. we have a litter box, and we put some poop in there but they just dont really pay attention to it. they poop when they please really and do it ALOT, u think maybe they are too young? i put a box in the corner of the cage where they go alot and they started going in another corner..

I would suggest you put a handleful of hay in their litterbox to entice them to use it.

Alot of times though young bunnies in a new place are just thinking about exploring.

And if you give them too much space, they will poop everywhere.

When they get their own pen and grow up a little they will learn.

Also spaying and neutering will help as well.

litter training can require a lot of patience thats for sure!  and i think that you have the 2 together is probably playing a factor right now too, since pooping can be territorial (tho i’m not sure if that starts when they’re as young as yours or not).  i think once you get your set up sorted out you can start some hardcore litter training and with consistancy you will eventually see some improvements.  it does happen!  hang in there

well right now, the rabbits live at my boyfriends house. we are thinking about maybe keeping 1 at my house and 1 at his. but i hear rabbits are social and i would feel bad separating them. and the pooping thing needs to stop because they do it EVERYWHEREEEEEEEEE, they have free run of the room most of the time and its all over the place.

Nice to have you on board.

First, I will also reiterate the statement of seperating them until you know that they are the same sex. We had one person here who wound up having a litter of 11 babies! Trust me, you don’t want that.  You should make an appointment for the vet asap so that they can both be checked out as well as sexed.

I’d suggest getting another cage and putting them both into one. Then, I’d also get a couple of those corner litter boxes and filling them up. And then keeping them in the cage for a couple of days. They should learn that they should go in there. If you give them too much space to start with, they’ll pick their own potty spot and that will be it from then on out (my girlfriend’s bun will only go in their bedroom now). You shoudn’t give them full run of the room yet. Use an X-pen to keep them close to their cages so they use the boxes. They will poop though as it is a territorial thing but they usually grow out of it or slow down the production of poops once they have claimed the place for their own.

I actually bought a small hand vacuum and use that whenever my buns leave behind some bb’s.

Oh, and I don’t think that they’re the same breed at all.  They’re cute but one is definitely a dutch and the other isn’t.  I suppose it could be that they are from the same litter but they would never be considered the same breed.

i asked the petstore people over and over “are u sure they are the same sexe and breed?” they said yes yes yes. but i knew something was fishy because they look nothing alike, and chewy is really tiny compared to her.
i live in miami, im used to everything being expensive, but i called the small animal vet and he said it was 400$ for each bunny to be spayed or neutered! i dont know what im going to do..

These are bun doctors.  Not sure if your vet is one of them.  But I’d take them in for at least an exam and if they sex them as the same breed, well you can have a little more time to deal with the spaying.

Has Pinky got red eyes or blue? I can’t tell in the picture because I don’t know if it’s the flash that is causing the red. You can get dutch rabbits that are white with blue eyes, it’s caused by recessive genes and even if you have two purebred parents with original dutch markings you can end up with a white bun!

Yeah, but even Madison’s facial features are not very dutch like (the cheeks are too rounded).  That’s why I suggest getting a doctor’s opinion.  If they’re both the same sex, you can relax a little about the spaying.  You should still get it done as 85% of all female buns develop uterine cancer by the age of 3.  Call the vets I mentioned, see how much they will charge for a spay.  You should shop around a bit as many cat and dog docs charge more as it is a bit harder to do the spaying on smaller animals – as well as the special needs for them in the operating room.

You can use an x-pen as a cage too – give it to one of the buns and have the other inside of the cage.

You don’t necessarily have to buy two new cages 🙂 Just section off part of the room with some nic grids or x pens. keep the original cage and add a pen so that they don’t have to be locked in the cage at all 🙂 I live in the Uk so obviously I’m not familiar with the cost of neutering etc…but i’m sure you will be able to find a vet who charges fees that are within reason….it varies from vet to vet. I found that my dog is a whole lot cheaper than a rabbits interms of upkeep!

Has Pinky got red eyes or blue? I can’t tell in the picture because I don’t know if it’s the flash that is causing the red. You can get dutch rabbits that are white with blue eyes, it’s caused by recessive genes and even if you have two purebred parents with original dutch markings you can end up with a white bun!

her eyes are blue, we thought she looked like a lil diva which is why we named her madison, like madison ave.

I’m almost totally certain that’s what we figured out on here, but give it a bit and see if anyone says different. For me, the F tattoo is a breeder thing and I’d take it to be female…Hey you seem to be quick replying and have a camera, why don’t you try to snap a few pics of the bunnies privates and we’ll all take a look and see if we can see for sure?

The first 2 weeks I had my buns they pooped so much and all over the place – I could not believe it! But now they poop only in their box. Although, it often gets kicked out as they jump in and out of the box.

I do think it would bad a bad idea for you to completely separate them by taking one to your house and leaving one at your BF’s house – they really need the companionship.

I am constantly amazed about the story’s about the stupid pet stores!

I’m not sure why but I just had to see her so one of the staff took her from her cage and let me hold “her”. She said they were sure that it was a girl. I flipped the bun over to see about trancing it and… well they were pretty much like large almonds just sittin there by HIS back end. How they could not know it was a boy is beyond me.

I used the vet for the rescue in Dallas and it was only $140 (all pain meds included) compared to our only local vet who charges over $400.
