I posted a thread earlier today about Holly being a packrat. A few minutes ago, I saw her pulling fur out of her dewlap and putting it in her box where she’s stuffing hay and everything. She is our only pet here. We do not have any male bunnies. Crazy stuff.
Do I dismantle the nest, or let her keep buidling it???
I would just let her keep building it. It may just be keeping her busy and I cannot imagine it is harming anything. If you dismantle it she would probably just rebuild it anyway.
Is she spayed? I don’t remember if she is.
Rabbits can make nests even though they are not pregnant, I personally would not dismantle it, she would of worked hard to make it and it won’t hurt anyone, let her enjoy it. 🙂
I wasn’t planning on dismantling it. I was just checking. She’s not spayed. That is something we want to do, but I don’t have permission from my husband yet. We have talked about doing it in the 2/3 months though.
She has worked hard. It has been kind of fun watching her. She’s resting right now. I think she wore herself out.
awe how cute. my hubby is against neuter spay so when feda is old enuf I have to sneak her and send hubby to orlando for a week to visit his bro or something heheee
since she’s not spayed yet – the hair pulling is likely due to a false pregnancy.
false pregnancies can be very stressful for bunnies and may continue to happen until she is spayed. False pregnant females will normally go through the same activities as if pregnant, i.e., milk production, nest building and aggression towards people or animals. It also can lead to an episode of gi stasis, since the stress can cause them to not eat as much – so keep a careful eye to ensure she is still eating.
please please convince your husband that she will be much healthier and happier once she’s spayed.
I just put food out, and she came out to eat. All that you said makes since. She wants our attention but in small doses.
My hubbies not against spaying her. He’s just worried about the financial end. In an earlier post, I said that he agreed to let me save money from a side job that I have. The problem is right now we are in the busy season of teaching with midterms and soon finals. I don’t have time to work there at this moment. I usually work there for spring break, but I teach at two schools and this year they have two different spring breaks.
We also talked about using tax money to get her spayed. It definitly is in the plans.
There is a place that gives discount spays, but someone posted an earlier post that scared me to death from that. I don’t remember all that was in that post. I guess this person worked for a vet or used to work for a vet who did discount spays. This person said something like they don’t do things the same as they do for the full price. I don’t even want to try to paraphrase for giving false info.
The discount place is also a good distance a way from us.
How long will this false pregnancy last? I don’t want to stress her out any more. What are the signs of GI status? I’ve heard people talking about it. From what I gather it is a blockage right? They don’t eat or poop. She’s doing both right now. I just saw her use her litter box, and I just gave her her greens.
Hi Holly,
The false pregnancy can last about a week or two (in the worst case), at least until she decides that she will not be having babies after all.
Our heroine Dana Krempels has a nice article on GI Stasis: http://www.bio.miami.edu/hare/ileus.html
Maybe if you tell your husband the cancer rate in female buns he will reconsider? 85% of female buns can get female cancers if they are not fixed. I waited too long to get my Carrera fixed. I waited until she was over 3years old and we were fortunate. She kept doing the nesting thing and then started producing clear fluid in her nipples that was very painful for her. They were concerned for cancer so they “strongly suggested” she get fixed asap. She was fixed w/in 2 weeks. I still feel bad because I think she suffered because of me. If I had gotten her fixed when I should have she would not have gone thru all that.
I volunteer for a humane society that uses a discount mobile vet unit that comes from an hour away. They are discounted but because rabbits really need a follow up visit and they dont offer this, it is just more cost efficient and less stressful for buns to get surgery and follow up at the same place w/ the same people. In our area we figured out the difference and it wasn’t worth the discount to use them versus our local vets. Once we figured out the cost of the follow up (your vet should not charge for a follow up if they do the surgery) in addition to the discounted surgery, well, it wasnt much of a difference. But it may be a huge difference in your area. And some mobile units may not give pain meds post op which can really make a huge difference in your buns comfort after surgery.
Just keep in mind you MUST do a follow up after surgery to make sure everything is going well.
Thank you. I’m going to keep working on him. Holly isn’t a year old yet. I told him this a couple of months ago. He said that we will definitely do it, but not yet. I e-mailed the discount place yesterday to see how much it was and info on how it is done. It is in Titusville. I live in Orlando. We’ll see how it goes.
i have a suggestion. sometimes with my husband i need to just make the first move. what if you set up an appt for an advance time, let’s say in two months and told your husband “this is when her appt is.” rather than waiting until the okay, AND THEN MAKING THE APPT, you can work towards having the money for that specific date. just an idea.
It’s a good idea. I’m not sure. He might tell me to cancel it. I’ll keep it in mind though. At least hes talking to me about it. He hasn’t shut down on it.
I had gotten several quotes for discount spay/neuters in my area. I decided to go w/ my regular vet b/c the price difference wasn’t all that huge. I’m glad I went w/ my regular vet, b/c she talked me through all my fears and really helped me out when Jessi didn’t start eating the next day. I don’t think I would have been as prepared and/or pro-active if it was the clinic and not my regular vet. Also, most bunny vets use a mix of anesthesia, which spay/neuter clinics do not generally follow that protocal. Did you check your local house rabbit site for discount info? Don’t forget that if you file a 2007 tax form, you are eligible for the economic stimulus tax rebate of up to $600? It’s a good thing to keep in mind for future planning.
well I would go with them.
skunk lion show. That is one thing we talked about this weekend. I asked if I could use part of that money for Holly. He wasn’t against it.
I’m really glad to hear your hubby’s open to using the refund toward Holly’s spay – that’s fantastic!
when looking for the cheaper quotes for spaying from different places, remember to figure in the cost of gas. That HAS become a factor for me.
Good point Marcus.
very good.
