Just out of general chit-chat really. I noticed that my pet shop sells sedatives called ‘serene-um’. Has anyone else seen this? Surely that should be illegal shouldn’t it?? Plus, I have the luxury of living in a neighbourhood where the people aren’t the sharpest tools in the box!!

we have a product like that available here, the one here (although i dont know if the one you are mentioning is the same) is just to give to pets for example fireworks night so they arent so scared and bunnies who are overally aggresive or whatever, i dont think its for use just everyday and im sure it is so mild as to only have a slight affect, i wonder say its a sedative that could seriously hinder animals as i believe products have to be tried and stuff before they can be sold publicly

HERE IS THE ADVERTISEMENT FOR IT (how do they know it’s delicious?)

The serene-um drops for rabbits helps to relax and soothe rabbits with common behavioural problems.

It comes in a delicious carrot flavour and it is 100ml.

Serene-UM® is a natural dietary supplement, which contains natural ingredients required to produce increased amounts of a mood stabilising substance, already present in the body, called serotonin. Serotonin is produced by the body naturally from nutrients in the diet; these nutrients form the basis for Serene-UM®, effectively giving the body the raw ingredients to produce more serotonin. Interestingly, serotonin is also a crucial player in the release of other substances that make your pet feel happy and rewarded.

Because many behavioural problems exhibited by our pets become learned behaviours very quickly, they can be very difficult to counteract. Serene-UM® assists by controlling or alleviating the underlying emotional state, which drives the problem behaviour, so that the learned behaviour can be corrected through re-training, use of behaviour aids or by following a behaviour modification program.

In many cases, simply the addition of Serene-UM® to the animal’s daily diet can show a significant change in their behaviour.

We have a similar product in the states called Rescue Remedy.  I have never used it, but it is supposed to be a natural way to calm an animal and help them overcome their fears.

I have never heard of that – but we do use rescue remedy with our bunnies. Scarlet Rose told me about it – and Dr Harvey also said it might help. It’s herbal and originally formulated for people.

here’s info on the herbs it includes from the website : http://www.bachflower.com/Rescue_Remedy.htm

Dr. Bach created an emergency combination of Essences which he called Rescue Remedy. It contains five different Essences: Star of Bethlehem, Clematis, Impatiens, Cherry Plum and Rock Rose. Rescue Remedy is worth carrying with you in case of emergencies or everyday stress. Rescue Remedy helps you go through difficult situations, stressful events, an exam or job interview in a calm and relaxed matter.

I would not recommend the Serene-UM drops at all.  There are too many componenets in it with differing compounds with effects that are mostly known on humans.  There are a lot of herbal products on the market for animals with questionable ingredients and some aren’t so good.  Here is a caution on herbal remedies for rabbits by Dr. Guerrera:

As for the Rescue Remedy, it was receommended by my vet, it worked well so I keep it on hand.
