Ok, I confess. I knew I had been totally taken in by the buns, when I took Daisy speed dating at Christmas because he was lonely and now I have 4 buns. I knew when I switched my grocery shopping from my much more convenient and cheaper Walmart to HEB because they had fresher and bigger bunches of parsley.

I developed ‘big hands’ when picking out a head of lettuce, accidently picking up all the loose leaves along with my head of lettuce. I dig around for the fresher greens until the stock boys are wondering who the heck I’m trying to impress with my cooking.

One entire shelf in the fridge is taken up by large tubs of washed, sorted and stored veggies.

I knew when I automatically look for NIC cubes on sale when I open the Target ad each week. and when I bought the big boxy dustpan with the long handle just for chasing poops. and I always look for towels, rugs and blankets at garage sales to add to their ‘linen’.

I just realized at lunch today I have been completely sandbagged by the cute little boogers, because from the day I had my first child (31 years ago) ago I have looked forward to the day I would get my tax return and there was no one standing with their hand out for it and I could finally buy that couch, recliner and coffee table I’ve always wanted.

Went to the store and walked around, looking at the ones I had drooled over for years and realized that it wouldn’t really look good with chew marks around it after all….lol. And the material was very slippery and probably would discourage them from jumping up. And decided I’d much rather get a comfortable one at a garage sale so they could all jump up with me and me not worry about it getting messed up. The recliner’s out, don’t want to squish anyone, and I don’t even care about marking it off my list.

and the funny thing was I didn’t even feel deprived….lol. As long as the buns are happy with it, I”m good.

Who else has changed their shopping for the ‘kids’?  ‘-)

        Kathy

You just crack me up! I just got back from errands and came upon a toy store and went looking for a “friend” for Edson, that being a stuffed bunny! When the salesperson asked me if I needed help I couldn’t bear to tell her I was looking for a stuffed rabbit for my rabbit! I walked out. Nothing was suitable anyway for the boy. Edson’s greens are way better than what we eat. I spent hours one day looking for a sign to put over his xpen to make it look homier. What a nutcase I have become. This is the only place I can admit these things as my husband and kids think I’ve gone to the looney bin. Glad there are other loonies out there too!!

my living room flooring is carpeting, much of what is covered up by a rug and cardboard.  people could walk in and think, “geez, this girl has no decorating sense.”  but i dont really care anymore.  it is no longer a concern to me that i have hay on the floor.  if a toy falls on the ground i instinctively pick it up so it wont get chewed, even if Meadow isn’t out.  my whole way of thinking revolves around her.

I buy so many greens now, more than I did before I had a bunny! I feel like a produce PRO now.
Hahah I’ve only had oh…one cashier asked me, “is this for a pet?” Another asked me how to eat/use
              dandelion…I replied, “I don’t know, it’s for my rabbit.” lol…My boyfriend told me it’s used in salads…
but I don’t think i’ve had it in any salads before..who knows..I may have! I certainly spend a lot
              on my Flopster though!

y’all cracking me up. someone just brought me some greens today she comes twice a week with diff stuff today was some greens so you know who will be helping me eat it. little bunny teeth. and yes I feel silly taking him to the vegies section with me but he had no interest and coudl have cared less I was hoping he would get excited over soemthing so I would know which was his fav and to expand the menu but n oooo he waited til we went outside and I let him on the grass to pee he ate the grass but the vegies nope no interest ahaaa.   I have been to the pet store gathering up all the diff hays they carry cuz the one nearby only has alfalfa and timothy. oh do they have a variety now.

yes we have a recliner I didn’t want it cuz of the squishign a bunny issue but hubby just lies down on it he doesn’t use the recliner thingy ahaaa. I have a couch cover I can’t use cuz I stuffed it behind a couch with pillows to keep bun out from behind it. I got tired of hunting for him and didn’t want him to dig holes in it in secret.  I go pluck  him some unsprayed grass and put it in the lettuce crisper to wash it. and some hibiscus and darn but he doesn’t like mint or sage. and i have it growing outside. picky bunny  we have hibiscus all over the place and he eats some but not much

the craziest thign I have done is i bought him a rose bush. ahaa yes a rose bush. he loves the petals. the blooms and leaves. so does his girlfriend. I told my hubby I love roses. when I bought it but was really for the rabbit. ahaa. I really do love roses but I can’t enjoy them much anymore. I give the petals to cotton after I smell and enjoy lookin at the for a few days now i enjoy watching my buns eat them. then hubby went out and got 5 more rose bushes that had been pruned down and are in pots. ahaaa. I am awaiting the blooms and new growth now that the other bush done bloomed and been eaten. now how is that for nuts. but I dont’ mind. giving unconditional love is a wonderful thing. the buns are so easy to love aren’t they. and I believe that we have to answer for God to how we took care of the animals in our care too. and a bunny heaven.

As we all know, our buns eat much healthier than we do. Only the best for my two while I’ll dine on Burger King and Pizza.

Dandelion leaves are actually delicious in salads. I look forward to harvesting a nice crop this year.
I am thinking of going back to being a vegetarian. I began in my early teens to eat nothing but vegetables and fruits (in my later years I have found I cannot eat raised breads, so grains are hard to manage unfortunately) and the more I study my buns’ diet, the more I realize this is what I need to turn to so I can be healthier as I age. Oddly enough, according to Asian philosophy, I am born in the Year of the Rabbit, so if I had been living like a bun all my life, I think I would’ve been a lot happier and healthier. It was kind of hard though, after meeting my husband, to stay away from the big beef burritos at Taco Bell
ALL my shopping is centered around my Mimzy. From toys to bedding to food to habitat and anything I can buy that a portion of the proceeds will assist a shelter in caring for abandoned rabbits. I am a frog’s hair from going back to school to become a small animal veterinary so I can take care of my rabbit better and perhaps other folks’ rabbits in the area. Now…do you think my boat is in the sea or is the sea in my boat? ^^

                        Too funny Kathy :~)

The people at the grocery stores I shop at know me as the rabbit lady and always ask about my rabbits. They never ask about me but just my rabbits LOL.

Who here scopes out the trash containers at the green grocer’s looking for carrot tops, beet tops and other goodies for their buns?

Who’s picked something out of the produce aisle at the store and had the checker ask “What is this?” and had to tell them sheepishly that no, I don’t really know how to cook arugula, dandelions, mustard greens, whatever it happens to be.

Who’s run into friends at the farmer’s market and had them ask “Do you ever buy food for your family here, or just for the rabbits?”

Not me, no sir, I’d never do any of those things.  That’d be crazy….

I’m still buying things for a new rabbit I haven’t even found yet!

I ordered a willow ball and put it in the cage I have up, with two new seagrass mats, and my brother saw it and asked what the willow ball was for.
I got a bottle of nature’s miracle once the rugs were professionally cleaned so I could catch future stains. I got cubes that I saw on sale at Targets so I can build an x-pen.

And I can’t bring myself to buy these gorgeous, lush heads of romaine lettuce at a special fresh market nearby because I don’t have someone at home to share it with.

I just didn’t get a new bunny.          Yet.

We can’t get any free greens here, they say its because of health reasons. I wish i could get some freebies, my lot cost me about $55 dollars a week in greens, and I am also finding it hard getting chicory(which they love), carrot tops are also hard to get. I also notice a lot of the veggies here are starting to wilt, so I have to be careful they don’t go off. I really need to start growing lots of veggies.

When I go shopping I only have rabbits in mind, I head strait to the pet section first, my hubby says I know were to meet you. LOL

Oh yes, holds head high and proud of it that I love my rabbits.

-I am known as “the rabbit lady” at every grocery store within 2 miles of where I live.
-Yes, I too have been asked what “this stuff” is in reference to some unusual greens whether they be collard, kale or mustard and how to cook it.
-I make special stops on the way home to go to the grocers to buy veggies for my rabbits. I know what each store carries and will make special trips to certain ones to get a variety. For example there is only one store by me that carries baby arugula that they LOVE.
                                – I always head for the produce section of a grocery store and veggies that I would settle for buying for myself are not up to par for my beloved rabbits.
-Anytime I go to purchase anything I think about how easy it is to bunny proof it and if it is safe to have around them, or what I can buy instead at the Binky Bunny store for them to play with.

So this thread is bringing up something in my mind because I’ve seen a few of you mention it:

Just how old is too old when it comes to veggies? I try to keep things as fresh and crisp as possible…but when is a veggie definitely “off” and needing to go in the dustbin?

You know, Mimzmum, I was thinking the same thing. We have a great technical college here, I got my commercial art degree there in 1972 (OLD OLD OLD) and I’ve been think about taking some courses just so I can feel more comfortable handling the buns. glad to know I’m not the only one with that rattling around in the attic  😉

Anything wilted, stinky, moldy or past its prime that you would not eat yourself should be tossed. They should all be crisp, fresh and no bad odor.

In my book, wilted is OK, that just indicates that the veggies were not kept cold enough.  Any trace of brown, black or slimyness, it goes into the compost.

                                          if i would not eat a veggie, i don’t give it to Meadow.  she’s spoiled, i know…

i always get asked “what is this?” at the checkout.  lately i’ve taken to doing the self-scan b/c i can find it quicker than the cashiers can.

i have dug thru the trash box to find carrot tops, but i put them back b/c i wasn’t sure how to pay for them…

Beka, I just ask for them. Only once did I have a person cop a bit of an attitude with me (at a farmer’s market no less), usually they package up whatever they have and give it to me. I always mention that it is for my bunnies.

What’s this trash can of greens you guys are talking about? I want!! Dandelions and carrot tops?

We go in anywhere to shop, and I’ll pick something up and Dave see’s that look in my eyes and says “STOP SHOPPING FOR BUNNES WE ARE AT _____” heheheh He was super impressed and mocked me for finding bunny stuff at jysk (furniture store)… LOL I’m always shopping for them Now I am even downloading music for them!! I’ve been downloading a variety to figure out what they like the most so I can make a CD for them to listen to during the day (There’s probably too many commercials for them on the radio hehe)
I make extra trips to shop for them, and we have five different kinds of hay for them for variety !

I did super luck out and I found an awesome store to buy thier greens. It’ called H & W and basically I guess they buy their veggies/fruits at auction (they *were* delivered to resturaunts either in error or were not up to par for that resturaunt) and are sold at very discount prices (four parsley for 99c!!!) Some things you can’t buy as they aren’t great but most of it is perfect and I would eat myself. It sells solely veggies/fruits and sells everything! It was imperative that I find a cheaper source for veggies because at the time I was spending about 8 dollars a day to feed Kokanee as she was off pellets and only eating fresh! I make special trips after work there to stock up!

At the local green grocer I go to, and at the local farmer’s market that runs during the summer, they sell the fancy organic carrots and beets with the tops still attached.   Most customers want the roots but don’t want the tops, so they ask the cashier to cut the tops off for them to make them easier to pack.  The cashiers keep them to the side, because there are several of us wackos who come in and ask for them.  One guy has goats, there is at least one other lady who has bunnies.  I just ask if they have any tops, if they have them they will gladly give them to me.  The farmer’s markey guys are great, they’ll pack up carrot and beet greens, the outside leaves of lettuces and other greens.  The buns get the good stuff, the not so good stuff is great for my compost.  I’ll take whatever they have.

A lot of veggies in the shops here are wilted, like Osprey said I toss them if they look or feel slimy or not a good color, black defiantly in the bin.

                                                      A WORD OF CAUTION:

My mother used to get grocery bags full of free fresh outer lettuce leaves for the pigs. They were removed by the grocery stores in the back before they put out the “better looking” heads to sell. They would fill a bag and give it to my mother.
Well, back then they sprayed the crops with many pesticides. Even though we carefully washed the lettuce we gave the pigs, the poor little piggies died from some they ate that still had the chemicals pervading the leaves. My mother was heartsick. My point is, find out what they are using these days on crops, and if there’s any question about sprayed leaves, I would give up the freebies and get the fresh ones you have to buy for humans.

Good point, rabbitpam.  The carrot tops at least are always marked “organic”, which pretty much means that they did not use any chemical pesticides on them.  I am sure they use other obnoxious stuff on them, just less obnoxious.  The outer leaves do bear the brunt of the spraying (and are also most likely to contain nasty stuff like E. Coli by the way), so most of the lettuce leaves go into the compost.
