Hey everyone. I’ve had my bunny for two weeks now – she’s becoming a house rabbit slowly but surely. However her pooing and weeing is totally uncontrollable! In the first week she was well behaved using a a makeshift cage where her food and litter was…but she stilled pooed in certain places. now all of a sudden she waits for us to go to sleep, jumps on the bed and poos and wees!!! usually ON us! so we build her a nice spacey cage thinking that when we’re not at home or asleep we’ll keep her in, and she will hopefully get used used to using the litter box. This is what i did last night when she jumped on my pillow and weed. needless to say she was extremely unhappy at her freedom suddenly being stopped, and she threw a big fuss, but finally settled down. However when i got home today, she was so so angry! she wouldnt let me come near her, an she stamped her feet at me! (usually she is quite relaxed and affectionate!) i bribed her with food, and finally she came to sit on my lap on the couch. i turned my back literally for a split second and she had made a wee on the couch!!!!

now i understand she’s still a baby, but how can i teach her to stop!! i feel like im cleaning wee 24/7! and i hate to put her in her cage, bc she just loves to hop and jump around our apartment! Please please help me to teach my little bunny to poo and wee in her litter AND NOT ON ME! thanks

My suggestion, and it is a hard one at that, would be to X-pen her and not let her out until she gets used to using the litter box. You can find more litter box training info on this site.

Oh, and pooing in different places tends to be normal as that’s how a bun marks territory.

with rabbits you have to start out in a small space until the litter habits are acceptable there.  that means peeing in the box and getting most poops in there.  most rabbits will continue to drop poops here and there even after littertrained, fortunately they’re easy enough to sweep up.  has your rabbit been spayed yet?  if not, once she is fixed her litter habits should improve as well.

                welcome Laylalover!

many bunnies do not get the hang on litterbox training until after they’re spayed or neutered. bunnies are highly territorial and they way they most often mark their territory is with poo and peeing. I also find what Beka suggested really helps – I would limit her space and add more litterboxes. Once she really has improved, you’ll want to slowly increase her roaming area.

Thanks for all the replies! I don’t think she’s spayed – actually it’s another subject I’ve been worrying about. Besides for helping with litter training, I heard that an unspayed rabbit has an 80% chance of getting cervical cancer! Is this true? Also, how do I go about finding an appropriate vet? And is a dangerous procedure? (I would rather her  wee everywhere than be dead! ) This is great forum – thanks

You are correct that 80% of unspayed buns will get some sort of cancer! That’s what tipped the scales for me.

The procedure isn’t dangerous, and it pretty routine if you have a good rabbit savy vet; I found mine by emailing all the vet clinics in my area a ‘form’ email. (If you do this, remember to put the vet clinic’s name in the subject line, that way when they respond you know who it is!) I asked if they saw rabbits, how many a month typically, the price and procedure for spay/neuter and also a few trick questions. The one’s who answered the trick questions correctly ‘passed’ in my mind; Then I used price to guide me from there.

My trick questions were : a) How long do rabbit’s have to fast before surgery-this is a trick as you should NEVER fast a rabbit and they can’t vomit so it’s unnecessary. b) How long did they stay at the clinic. -A good vet should send the rabbit home as soon as they are eating or at least by the end of the day-provided there were no complications, as rabbits recover (generally) better at home where they are less stressed. c) what type of antibiotics/pain meds do you give; I wanted them to say antibiotics were only necessary if blah blah…and to not name an incorrect antibiotic (you can google any antibiotic name they give you to see if it’s rabbit suitable) and to send me home with pain meds (like metacam). ]

House Rabbit Society has a good article on find a vet as well: http://www.rabbit.org/faq/sections/vet.html

Good luck!! And welcome to binkybunny!!

Yes I agree with others that you need to give her a much smaller space until she gets it!  An xpen attached to her cage is ideal.  I would put a litter box in the cage and in the xpen.  That’s what I did with Edson and it really works.

Ok, so an update! We keep her in her cage at night, and most of the time she’s pretty well behaved – sometimes she’s not sleepy though and she tries to get out! She has stopped weeing and pooing on the coouch which is great! She loves to sit and chill there. However, she has a vendetta agaisnt the bed! when we dont roll up the futon mattress she pees and poos everywhere. so we make a habit to roll it up. the mornings we sleep in, we let her out her cage an get back into bed. she jumps on the bed, we take her off and this goes on until we get put of the bed. she seemed to be getting beta, so the other night while we were eating, we left the bed open. the bedroom is in eye view so i watched te whole night and she didnt even jump on the bed. we got up to clear the plates turn around and guess what!?!? she had peed and pooed ALL OVER THE BED in a space of seconds. it was so bad it looke das if there were ten rabbits using the bed as litter. her poo was scatter and she peed everywhere. (she must have been holding it in the whole night just waiting for us to turn our backs!!) now, this seems very territorial to me. is it bc she sees us using the bed but we wont allow her on it? when we trained her not to use the couch we would take her off the couch and sit with her on the floor, so she when she didnt use the couch neither did we!! what should we do? closing off the bedroom isnt an option bc we live in a studio apartment. do we allow her on the bed supervised? this morning she was hopping on the bed nudging and licking and basically asking for love. so we thought shame she’s been so good we’ll let her lie with us. then she nosed her way under the blanket and lay between us. ahhhhh cute, right? think again! while she was lying, not prewarning bum up, she PEED! well, that got us out of bed quickly. Im at my wits ends, and doing laundry alomst every second day! please help!!!!! thanks guys

have you found a vet yet? do you know how old she is? you may want to get her an exam soon so you will have an idea how soon she can be altered. she’s peeing on the bed b/c it smells the most like you. try getting a plastic shower curtain from the dollar store and putting it over the top while you’re not using the bed. that way it will be protected. do you have an xpen? if she is good everywhere but the bed, and there’s no door you can close, how about xpening around the bed, rather than her.

Yep, that’s territorial. There could be two different reasons she’s doing it. One she’s trying to claim it as hers, or she’s just saying she’s part of your clan. Either way, you have to let her know it’s not acceptable, and for now, do not let her on the bed at all when you are there. You have to claim the bed as yours so she is a “guest” on the bed. She can still be part of your clan, but you can claim the bed as yours only.

Once she’s spayed, her need to mark due to territory should die down. (note it can take a month for you to start to see results)

I like the idea of a plastic shower curtain cover for the bed while she’s not being supervised.

Thanks everyone! I’m looking for a vet…I moved overseas to yrs ago and this is my first animal since the move, so im very unfamiliar with vets here – even for just cats or dogs! I am feeling a bit nervous, but i know its the best. As far as i know she is about 4 months old. But i bought her from a store, and i here they tell you all sorts of things that are incorrect – so i’m hoping she’s a girl! if anyone knows of a reputable vet in Jerusalem Israel that would be wonderful! Thanks again – I’m so glad I found this forum

                                  Hi, laylalover,
I just checked the House Rabbit Society website and got this:

                                  http://members.shaw.ca/cocoasun/Africa&AsiaRabbitVets.htm

If this link doesn’t work, then go to http://www.rabbitvet.net, World Rabbit Veterinarians, and scroll for Israel. There is a list of about 4 or 5 vets, though I can’t see which city but you will probably recognize their locations. If that doesn’t work, just start with the House Rabbit Society and do a search on their site for world vets, Israel:

http://www.rabbit.org  (House Rabbit Society is a great site to bookmark since it has advice on all kinds of bunny related things.

wow you live in jerusalem AND you have a bun how cool.  people worldwide have pets and we meet on 1 website here isn’t that wonderful

I sure hope you find the vet you are looking for. buns do seem so delicate but a good vet will do a blood test first is more expensive but that should calm the anxiety you feel over the spay/neuter. I understand how you feel I stayed at the vets all day with my male lol.
