i’ve seen hospitalized bunnies eat more greens than our iorek does! he nibbles on hay during the day and night. he gets a bare minimum of pellets (which he eats every last one.) and he eats a sall amount of greens. i’ve tried romaine, parsley, kale, and collards so far. he’s only taken to the romaine and parsley. he’ll eat maybe 4 leaves of romaine and a few sprigs of parsely (and a tiny piece of fruit for a treat at bedtime.) at work we make our bunnies about 3 (sometimes more if they eat it all) big salads a day and except for the really sick ones that i have to syringe feed they all eat all of their greens. i’m going to the store today to try and find some other types of greens. his stools are normal shape and consistency (and plenty of them too.) i have a big feeling since he was a rescue he was living off of a pelleted diet. i have a huge list of greens to try. what types do your babies like most? is there anything that is “irresistable” i’d really like him to start eating more greens. our exotics vet is a hot commodity so his appointment isn’t until the 24th (unless it is an emergency which this isn’t since he does eat and everythings moving fine.)

What’s an “iorek”? If you are talking about a rabbit, mine loves mint. I’d be careful though about introducing too many at once. Edson also likes both kinds of parsley, Italian & curly. He also loves the organics baby greens – and in that is baby chard. And…carrot top greens.

I used to switch off between Romaine and Green Leaf Lettuce. He seemed to prefer the Green Leaf (get the fresh heads marked that specifically) and I think it had a much milder taste. Dark leaves, good for him, and he ate every bite.

He never liked hay (argh!) so I got the Oxbow Timothy Hay pellets (Bunny Basics) that had ground up hay in them to get it into him. There are a few other “better” pellet brands around, so check websites. I always had fresh hay handy, just didn’t get eaten much. Some pellets have much less fat content than others, so are a better choice. (Yours probably was fed lousy grocery store pellets.)

My bunny loves curly parsley and cilantro. He’s also super picky about hay, so maybe you could try changing his hay brand/type. When I first got my bun, we tried to give him Kaytee Timothy Hay, and he never really liked it. On the suggestion of one of my co-workers, I switched him over to Sweet Meadow Farms Timothy, which he loves, however, I don’t know if it is available outside of Massachusetts.  I have also heard of a lot of people having success with the Binky Bunny hay.

Good luck with getting your bunny to eat!

                iorek is our rabbits name

how i’m introducing new greens is this:

when he was being held at my job waiting to go to a new rescue he was given romaine, parsely and kale. so when i took him home 2 days later i added collards. well the romaine and parsley was completely eaten, the kale was nibbled and the collards were untouched. so the next day i offered romaine, kale, paresly and the top of celery (with the leaves.) and again he ate the romaine and parsely, nibbled the kale and nibbled the celery. i won’t add something new until tomorrow, i want to be sure the celery doesn’t upset his stomach. i just wonder which greens are most preferred by others rabbits.

at work we suggest alfalfa hay to those that refuse to eat the timothy hay and to those that are underweight, orchard grass for the overweight buns and timothy hay for everyone else. and we only suggest feeding 2 tablespoons of pellets per day. 2-3 big salads a day (or really as many greens as they’d like as long as they aren’t overweight.)
so i’m trying to go by that with iorek. but like i said he probably never knew what hay and greens were with the way he attacks those pellets when i put them in the dish!

my bun loves carrot tops but they are few and far between here you would be lucky to get any, maybe you could feed extra pellets until he is interested in the greens if you think he isnt getting enough food?

I would definitely not feed extra pellets.  I would encourage eating more hay.  Collards and kale are pretty potent so I would just stick with the parsley, romaine and try some mint for now.

To encourage more hay eating, I find that ‘freshening” the hay up, or adding a hanful a few times a day works wonders! They get all excited and munch it all down…If I just leave the same amount in all day they don’t really bother with it. I do this in the morning when i get up, when I get home and before bed so that works well for me.

Also for greens often you have to offer something a few times (and it gets snubbed a few times) before they eat it normally. Mine have turned their noses up at lots of stuff that they now love to eat! Keep at it, your doing good!!

Do you have pics of your bunny you want to share?

Hi thencamebun! Like you mentioned, in ioreks past he probably didn’t get too many veggies.  Be careful how often you offer him a new veggie because like it was mentioned it can give him a GI upset.  I too would not recommend increasing the pellets, is his weight O.K. though?  Any idea how old he is? How long do you leave the veggies in his area when you take them away?  Sometimes a lot of humans take away the offending veggie right away when they see that their royal rabbit does not like it.  However, leave it in there until the next day.  Also I am wondering what his poops look like, are they normal or small or…?  When was the last time he was seen by a vet for a thorough check up?

Here is a bit of a write-up on how to introduce veggies:

                        http://www.coloradohrs.com/articles/diet_misc_feeding.asp

And a comprehensive list of veggies:

                        https://binkybunny.com/Default.aspx?tabid=144

Definately check out the BUNNY INFO section too!

The caution with alfalfa and too much is that it is high in calcium and can cause bladder sludge and other problems even bladder stones.  So it’s really best to leave it for younger or emaciated rabbits that need to gain weight.  If you offer alfalfa hay, balance it out with a timothy-based pellet or offer timothy hay and an afalfa-based pellet.  Also, with kale, collard greens and spinach, they contain a lot of oxalates that can build up in a rabbits system (not good) so it’s best to only buy say 1 bunch of greens, feed it until it is gone and give a 1-2 week break between when you offer it again.

For picky hay eaters, there are some options like offering second-cut timothy hay, most rabbits cannot resist it.  Binky Bunny carries several hay blends that goes over well with most picky rabbits. Or you can add some tasty organically grown flowers like chamomile, lavender, clover and hibiscus.  Oxbow does make a botanical blend hay, however I choose to make it myself and save some $$.  I purchase the flowers from my local health food store and also grow my own flowers.

I hope this helps and do keep us updated!

i’m not sure how old iorek is. he seems young. he sees the vet on the 24th so i am hoping he can give me a better estimate of his age other than “he seems young” lol.

i leave the “gross” veggie (gross according to iorek and my daughter lol) in all day and remove it at night and replace it with a fresh piece of the same kind and leave that in all night. i plan to reintroduce the “gross” veggies in a few weeks again. same as i do with my daughter lol.

i just want to do the best for him. my dogs recieve the best food and treats, i want the same for iorek too.

Awe that is so sweet of you, you are taking such good care of him. Hopefully the vet can give you a better idea of his age. He seems young is a bit mysterious. *chuckle* Although you may not get a better idea either, have his testicles descended yet? If they haven’t he is probably less than 3 1/2 months old, which if he is, then you can opt for alfalfa hay or pellets. Poor fella is going to think he hit the lotto with you! Iorek is one lucky bunny!

I notice pets stores carry diff hays. I went to the pet store over the bridge we say here into the other city and they have brome , meadow, bermuda grass , timothy and alfalfa. they carry Kaytee   and a few of Peters  brands.  nearby here they carry Peters and Kaytee and 1 other brand I think LM but the kinds are only alfalfa and timothy. cotton tends to like Peters timothy better I tried him on it and he likes it. All buns are different and have different tastes.  you can try different types of hay as well as brands as you go along. when you find the ones he likes hurrah. just l like his greens. I tried taking Cotton to pick out his greens. in his carrier they never noticed him.  didn’t work too well cuz he wasn’t interested at that time. he prefered grass  outside ahaa. yes you can give some grass too bahia, st augustine , dollar weed they just love. wash them and see if he likes them. make sure not sprayed with pesticide tho. worth a shot to give him some variety. oh by the way some just love rose petals so i bought a rose bush ahaa. cotton and feda love it. then we got more rose bushes. they have to grow out tho they were pruned and thrown out. so in time they will have lots of petals to eat. maybe like the leaves too. I gave them hibiscus twice we have those bushes all over here. i should move to louisiana they are full of weeping willow trees hehee. if I find some here the buns will get some.

I have a very finicky bun when it comes to hay. I have to keep switching up types to get him to even nibble on it. Your bun may just be picky. (extreme patience required…lol)
I also think my bun may be one of those ‘all-day nibblers’. I am the kind of person, myself, who needs to eat six small meals a day instead of 3. In kind, my bun seems to prefer his veggies given to him in small portions over the course of the day. He was an abandoned bun, so my guess is, he loves the attention almost as much as the food delivery.
Just a few thoughts. You’ve already received great advice here! ^^ Welcome to BinkyBunny.com!

thanks for all the great tips everyone!

i figured iorek’s issue with the hay out! he didn’t like the hay holder. when i was filling it some fell on the floor which he promplty came over and ate. so i dropped a handful on the floor of the cage and he went to town last night! and i didn’t chop up his greens that well last night i left the pieces bigger than i’ve been and he ate really well. so i don’t know if he is just OCD like me lol or he got fully adjusted to his new place and is now eating better. whatever it was i’m glad it worked!

I’m really glad to hear he’s eating more hay and seems more interested in food. I find bunnies really like fresh hay – so giving them a handful several times a day often means they’ll eat more than if they have a full hay rack that’s been sitting there for a few days.
