Ok, i’ve had my bun, Butter, for about 3 years. She was part of a bonded pair but sadly he passed away in June. Recently, I rescued a homeless cat, and they live peacefully together — its been about 4 mos. now. I know very little about rabbits and cats and any diseases. Anyway, Butter is totally litter trained.  All of a sudden, she now INSISTS on pooping and peeing either “in” kittie’s litter box or  right next to it on the floor. If its a territorial issue, I’m OK with that. What I worrie about  is — will my Butter contact a  disease if she comes in  contact with kittie’s poop or pee in any way? Thanks sooo much for feedback.

I do not know of any diseases that can cross from rabbits ro cats or vice versa.  I know people who have both, and sometimes there are litterbox wars as part of the “this is mine” thing.

Only thing I can think about that could be a problem is that clay-based litters can get on bunny fur and if they lick it off it can cause a blockage.   Maybe think about switching the cat’s litter to something like feline pine?  you can use it for both boxes.

You definitely need to change the litter. Cat litters of the clay types are extremely dangerous to rabbits. That would be my number 1 priority to not allow the rabbit to use the cat box or change the litter to something completely safe. BUT, I know because I have a cat, that the litters that are not the clumping clay based don’t work for stinky cat pee and poops! There is something about cat poop though that could be dangerous but I can’t remember what it is and I don’t know if it would affect a rabbit. I do remember when I was pregnant that you are not supoposed to change cat litter! Better safe than sorry.

Knowitons, the condition you are thinking of is called toxoplasmosis.  The CDC has a good article on it here: http://www.cdc.gov/healthypets/pregnant.htm

As for anything that can be passed from a cat to your rabbit, fleas, ticks and mites come to mind.  But as for diseases, I cannot think of any off the top of my head except maybe something like rabies or worms.

The litter thing, yes, you’ll want to attend to that or move the cat litter box to an area your rabbit is not allowed but where the can can get to, perhaps a gate or panel in the doorway to help that out.

As long as your cat has a yearly stool sample check (for intestinal parasites) and the results are negative- your bunny should not get anything from your cat.  Cats can transmit roundworms and coccidia thru their stool.  But if you cat is negative and an indoor cat with no exposure to other animals or their feces- the risk is small.  If your cats goes outdoors- the risks are higher as the cat has opportunity to pick up intestinal parasites.

As others have mentioned- it would be best to use a non-clay litter.
