She figures a bunny isn’t as high-maintenance as a dog.

The family put their 9-year-old Rottweiler down two years ago after it was struck by a vehicle.

“(Ashley’s) a calm person, and she wants something to cuddle with,” Silva said. “I think a rabbit would be better for her right now — something to keep her entertained and help her learn responsibility.”

The only lettuce they should eat is Romaine, in addition to carrots, apples and oranges, Dahl said.

The article seems to say that rabbits are easier to care for than dogs, they make good pets for young children, and their diets consist of “Romaine, in addition to carrots, apples and oranges.”

            Hey Lago
Can you put the contact info for them here? We can all write the news and let them know how inaccurate they are, and the population problem they are contributing to by printing that junk!
            Thanks

hmmm… the article was not as wrong as it could have been tho.  it did mention adoption, spay/neuter, regular vet care, and the long-term commitment involved.

                oranges… not right.

                cuddling… probably not.

                low-maintenace… hahahahahaha!!!

                i’d give the article a 65%.

                  Hey Y’all,

I just sent a comment to MLive through their website.
I mentioned what a proper dies is and that they are not “live stuffed animals”.
I also gave links to HRS & Make mine chocolate.
                  I don’t know if it will help, but . . . .

Oranges are okay for bunnies – ours like them.

The point isn’t that rabbits can’t eat those things. They can. The point is that they list a rabbit’s diet as Romaine lettuce and a variety of sugary/starchy treats.

And saying that Romaine is the only lettuce a rabbit can eat is also incorrect. Off the top of my head I know that boston and bib lettuce are fine to give to a rabbit…

I think it would be better to supply more accurate information to the publication or the person who made this statement (it’s possible that’s not exactly what she said, these things absolutely happen) rather than attacking the publication or the person who made this statement according to the website.

hmmm.  i always thought citrus was a no-no b/c of the acidity… time for more research…

I was really disappointed when I saw this in our local newspaper.  I was surprised that the adoption fee varied if they were spayed or neutered or not- why wouldn’t you spay or neuter before adoption?  I am not even sure I would find age to be a valid reason to not spay/neuter.

The vet for the Kent County Humane Society is a great small animal vet- she had guinea pigs thru vet school and adored them.  It  seems as though no one bothered to get her opinion about the adopt a thon.

If anyone would like the address of the place that is responsible for the adopt-a-thon I can post it.

Nope orange is OK, and I’ve read (but not done it) that they can have the peel too!

                                  From HRS diet page:

Please refer to the Diet FAQ for detailed info on proper quantities and combinations to feed for a well-ballanced diet.

                                  Apple (remove stem and seeds)
                                  Blueberries
                                  Melon
                                  Orange (including peel)
                                  Papaya
                                  Peach
                                  Pear
                                  Pineapple
                                  Plums
                                  Raspberries
                                  Strawberries

Sugary fruits such as bananas and grapes should be used only sparingly, as occasional treats. Bunnies have a sweet tooth and if left to their own devices will devour sugary foods to the exclusion of healthful ones.

This whole article with Easter coming up just did NOT DO SERVICE to the efforts of bunny rescue groups.  Easter was not even mentioned- let alone trying to convey what a house rabbit REALLY is.

I am not sure who is to blame- but I plan on mailing my letter directly to the Humane Society of Kent County as they are the ones that came off looking poorly in the eyes of rabbit enthusiasts!
