so I routinely search craigslist for rabbit supplies and I recently came across this post by someone offering up “several” male and female rabbits for adoption. well I just asked about the girls in case any of them were spayed and could be a bonded companion for Truffles and there are FOUR of females alone, all pretty young around 9-11 months old and NONE of them are spayed. they are so beautiful but I really couldn’t afford to spay them and have enough money set aside for emergency vet expenses for 2 rabbits and plus I would want to take ALL of them. They look like they have probably been hutch buns. He is only asking a $20 rehoming fee for each. I thought I would post this here in case any kind hearted person here wanted to help out they are SO beautiful and I’m worried they will become snake food or lab buns
The add is on the New York Hudson Valley Craigslist http://hudsonvalley.craigslist.org/grd/599261674.html
Here are the girls’ pics. I don’t have pics of the male buns but I know he said he has some as well. The second bun also has an identical twin sister:

Oh man they are adorable! Look they are in cedar shavings! A big no no! Rescue them!!!!!
This is typical for Craigslist – I say if you cannot afford to spay them and have money left for an emergency fund then you should not take them on. They are lovely but if you cannot afford them, you cannot afford them – you would be making an impulse “purchase” if you do get one of them and you don’t want to do that.
don’t worry I know I won’t be taking them I was just hoping someone here could help. I don’t know if there is anyone in the area though ![]()
Well, do you think there’s any way you could convince him to relinquish them to a shelter? If he’s offering them up that cheaply he probably just wants to get rid of them anyway. I mean, I’m in Massachusetts, which isn’t terribly close (I’d have to make a 4+ hour drive, probably), but if worse came to worse I might be able to arrange some sort of a mid-way pickup and donate their “rescue money.” I can’t keep any of them, though, because while I’m starting to suspect I’m not actually allergic to bunnies (or have grown out of my bunn allergies), I haven’t really finalized that hypothesis yet and would prefer not to take a bunny and subsequently have to relinquish it. But seriously, we should start a fund for their rescue. If everyone pitched in like $5 we’d have the money in no time, and even if they couldn’t be kept by anyone here we’d be able to get them to a shelter.
I would definitely contribute money and help with transport or anything I could. most HRS’s and what not don’t take private surrenders so I wouldn’t know where to take them though ![]()
Could you contact an HRS and explain that they’re a “rescue” from Craig’s List?
Also, goodness gracious, bunny #2 looks like a cottontail. o___O
Is this man giving any reason for relinquishing the bunnies, by any chance?
Well, this man is doing the right thing – I don’t look at these rabbits and see them as being abused. They look healthy and the area is clean.
It is his responsibility to find them a home and that is what he is doing. Also since you don’t know the circumstances of these rabbits – it’s possible this man is a breeder – then you would not be helping the situation.
Most rescues won’t look at this as a “rescue” I’m afraid. Many rescues encourage people who cannot keep their rabbits for whatever circumstances to find them a home on their own. Also taking them to a shelter doesn’t necessarily ensure they will get adopted or they will be better off.
I do not think this man’s a breeder. Between the cost and the advertising on Craigslist, my guess is that he got unaltered buns and had an explosion. My guess is that he’ll be fixin’ the parents but doesn’t want to keep the babies and therefore wants to get them away before they too begin to breed.
aw they are all so cute especially the one on the bottom! i hope they get a good home.. i wish i could help some ![]()
Hmm, I agree that he probably isn’t a breeder. Only $20 seems a little low for a breeder price, and I looked at the ad– it’s very unprofessional and he doesn’t list himself as a breeder. He also specifically states that a bunch of the bunnies are adults, which is also strange– breeders usually sell the bunnies earlier than that. Finally, I worry a lot about their circumstances; they’re in cedar shavings and, if you look closely at the pictures, outside in what appears to be ice. They don’t look unhealthy, but who’s to say that these aren’t just the good-looking ones, and the reason he isn’t showing pictures of the other bunnies is because they’re totally abused and bedraggled?
I emailed the local HRS saying I would make a donation to defray the costs of the rabbits, but I don’t necessarily expect to hear back since I know they don’t take owner surrenders and encourage people to find homes for their rabbits on their own, which I guess he is doing. I just feel bad because they are so darling and being kept outside in this weather (it has been COLD here) and in cedar shavings is certainly not the good life. I know they might not get adopted ata shelter but shelter living will probably be better than what will happen if they don’t get bought, and for many it will probably be better than getting bought as well
I wish I was already a rich professional instead of a poor college student I would adopt and alter them all.
I think the reason the second one looks like a cotton tail, is because his coloring is Agouti…Which is wild type color…They do look wild but it’s no guarantee they are
n__n;; Yeah, I highly doubt he’s really a cottontail. His face is a little chubby for a wild rabbit…
Any news, by the way?
